Book Synopsis Justice on Fire by : J. Patrick O'Connor
Download or read book Justice on Fire written by J. Patrick O'Connor and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of November 29, 1988, near the impoverished Marlborough neighborhood in south Kansas City, an explosion at a construction site killed six of the city’s firefighters. It was a clear case of arson, and five people from Marlborough were duly convicted of the crime. But for veteran crime writer and crusading editor J. Patrick O’Connor, the facts—or a lack of them—didn’t add up. Justice on Fire is O’Connor’s detailed account of the terrible explosion that led to the firefighters’ deaths and the terrible injustice that followed. Justice on Fire describes a misguided eight-year investigation propelled by an overzealous Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agent keen to retire; a mistake-riddled case conducted by a combative assistant US attorney willing to use compromised “snitch” witnesses and unwilling to admit contrary evidence; and a sentence of life without parole pronounced by a prosecution-favoring judge. In short, an abuse of government power and a travesty of justice. O’Connor’s own investigation, which uncovered evidence of witness tampering, intimidation, and prosecutorial misconduct, helped give rise to a front-page series of articles in the Kansas City Star—only to prompt a whitewashing inquiry by the Department of Justice that exonerated the lead ATF agent and named other possible perpetrators who remain unidentified and unindicted. O’Connor extends his scrutiny to this cover-up and arrives at a startling conclusion suggesting that the case of the Marlborough Five is far from closed. Journalists are not supposed to make the news. But faced with a gross injustice, and seeing no other remedy, O’Connor felt he must step in. Justice on Fire is such an intervention.

Book Synopsis Turning the Tide for the Next Generation by : Deborah Bradberry Solomon
Download or read book Turning the Tide for the Next Generation written by Deborah Bradberry Solomon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been an avid reader for many years, have studied effective leaders throughout history, and have been writing editorials and letters to newspapers and other publications. I am an optimist by nature and believe most people just need to be encouraged to bring out the best in them and we find that there are many heroic and honorable people living all around us. I have written this book discussing what has shaped and influenced my views of the world. Perhaps you may relate to some of the stories I share. I also write about some suspicious deaths that have taken place the more I have gotten involved making my views public. It seems common sense to me that strategies I discuss could be implemented in the culture, and in the major political parties or a third political party could be started. This would help us in "Turning the Tide" for the next generation!

Book Synopsis Black Baseball, 1858-1900 by : James E. Brunson III
Download or read book Black Baseball, 1858-1900 written by James E. Brunson III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 1402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the most important baseball books to be published in a long time, taking a comprehensive look at black participation in the national pastime from 1858 through 1900. It provides team rosters and team histories, player biographies, a list of umpires and games they officiated and information on team managers and team secretaries. Well known organizations like the Washington's Mutuals, Philadelphia Pythians, Chicago Uniques, St. Louis Black Stockings, Cuban Giants and Chicago Unions are documented, as well as lesser known teams like the Wilmington Mutuals, Newton Black Stockings, San Francisco Enterprise, Dallas Black Stockings, Galveston Flyaways, Louisville Brotherhoods and Helena Pastimes. Player biographies trace their connections between teams across the country. Essays frame the biographies, discussing the social and cultural events that shaped black baseball. Waiters and barbers formed the earliest organized clubs and developed local, regional and national circuits. Some players belonged to both white and colored clubs, and some umpires officiated colored, white and interracial matches. High schools nurtured young players and transformed them into powerhouse teams, like Cincinnati's Vigilant Base Ball Club. A special essay covers visual representations of black baseball and the artists who created them, including colored artists of color who were also baseballists.
