Book Synopsis Scientific Applications Of The Connection Machine (2nd Edition) by : Horst D Simon
Download or read book Scientific Applications Of The Connection Machine (2nd Edition) written by Horst D Simon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-12-16 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Connection Machine is one of the first commercially available machines which allows users to explore massive parallelism for the solution of large scale engineering and scientific applications. The CM2 features up to 64,000 processors. This is parallelism on an unprecedented scale which opens up new areas of computational science. Because of the overwhelming response to the first edition, a new edition has been prepared. New papers which document recent developments are added, bringing the volume up-to-date.

This book was released on 2005-02-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the International Symposium on High Performance Computational Science and Engineering 2004 (IFIP World Computer Congress) is an essential reference for both academic and professional researchers in the field of computational science and engineering. Computational Science and Engineering is increasingly becoming an emerging and promising discipline in shaping future research and development activities in academia and industry ranging from engineering, science, finance, economics, arts and humanitarian fields. New challenges are in modeling of complex systems, sophisticated algorithms, advanced scientific and engineering computing, and associated (multi-disciplinary) problem solving environments. The papers presented in this volume are specially selected to address the most up-to-date ideas, results, work-in-progress and research experience in the area of high performance computational techniques for science and engineering applications. This state-of-the-are volume presents the proceedings of the International Symposium on High Performance Computational Science and Engineering, held in conjunction with the IFIP World Computer Congress, August 2004, in Toulouse, France. The collection will be important not only for computational science and engineering experts and researchers but for all teachers and administrators interested in high performance computational techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICANN, the International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, is the official conference series of the European Neural Network Society which started in Helsinki in 1991. Since then ICANN has taken place in Brighton, Amsterdam, Sorrento, Paris, Bochum and Lausanne, and has become Europe's major meeting in the field of neural networks. This book contains the proceedings of ICANN 98, held 2-4 September 1998 in Skovde, Sweden. Of 340 submissions to ICANN 98, 180 were accepted for publication and presentation at the conference. In addition, this book contains seven invited papers presented at the conference. A conference of this size is obviously not organized by three individuals alone. We therefore would like to thank the following people and organizations for supporting ICANN 98 in one way or another: • the European Neural Network Society and the Swedish Neural Network Society for their active support in the organization of this conference, • the Programme Committee and all reviewers for the hard and timely work that was required to produce more than 900 reviews during April 1998, • the Steering Committee which met in Skovde in May 1998 for the final selection of papers and the preparation of the conference program, • the other Module Chairs: Bengt Asker (Industry and Research), Harald Brandt (Applications), Anders Lansner (Computational Neuroscience and Brain Theory), Thorsteinn Rognvaldsson (Theory), Noel Sharkey (co chair Autonomous Robotics and Adaptive Behavior), Bertil Svensson (Hardware and Implementations), • the conference secretary, Leila Khammari, and the rest of the
Book Synopsis Sparse Distributed Memory and Related Models by : Pentti Kanerva
Download or read book Sparse Distributed Memory and Related Models written by Pentti Kanerva and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper describes sparse distributed memory (SDM) as a neural-net associative memory. It is characterized by two weight matrices and by a large internal dimension -- the number of hidden units is much larger than the number of input or output units. The first matrix, A, is fixed and possibly random, and the second matrix, C, is modifiable. The paper compares and contrasts SDM to (1) computer memory, (2) correlation-matrix memory, (3) feed-forward artificial neural network, (4) cortex of the cerebellum, (5) Marr and Albus models of the cerebellum, and (6) Albus' cerebellar model arithmetic computer (CMAC). Several variations of the basic SDM design are discussed: the selected-coordinate and hyperplane designs of Jaeckel, the pseudorandom associative neural memory of Hassoun, and SDM with real-valued input variables by Prager and Fallside. SDM research conducted mainly at RIACS in 1986-1991 is highlighted."

This book was released on 2006-10-04 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1980s and early 1990s there was signi?cant work in the design and implementation of hardware neurocomputers. Nevertheless, most of these efforts may be judged to have been unsuccessful: at no time have have ha- ware neurocomputers been in wide use. This lack of success may be largely attributed to the fact that earlier work was almost entirely aimed at developing custom neurocomputers, based on ASIC technology, but for such niche - eas this technology was never suf?ciently developed or competitive enough to justify large-scale adoption. On the other hand, gate-arrays of the period m- tioned were never large enough nor fast enough for serious arti?cial-neur- network (ANN) applications. But technology has now improved: the capacity and performance of current FPGAs are such that they present a much more realistic alternative. Consequently neurocomputers based on FPGAs are now a much more practical proposition than they have been in the past. This book summarizes some work towards this goal and consists of 12 papers that were selected, after review, from a number of submissions. The book is nominally divided into three parts: Chapters 1 through 4 deal with foundational issues; Chapters 5 through 11 deal with a variety of implementations; and Chapter 12 looks at the lessons learned from a large-scale project and also reconsiders design issues in light of current and future technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural Networks have been the theater of a dramatic increase of activities in the last five years. The interest of mixing results from fields as different as neurobiology, physics (spin glass theory), mathematics (linear algebra, statistics ... ), computer science (software engineering, hardware architectures ... ) or psychology has attracted a large number of researchers to the field. The perspective of dramatic improvements in many applications has lead important companies to launch new neural network programs and start-ups have mushroomed to address this new market. Throughout the world large programs are being set-up: in Japan the government has committed more than $18 million per year to its 20 year Human Frontier Science program; the DARPA and the US Navy have alloted more than $10 million per year each and other US government agencies are contributing to important but less ambitious programs. Neural networks are also a major research are in the supercomputing initiative. Europe has from the beginning taken an active part in funding major projects in the new field with BRAIN, BRA, ANNIE and PYGMALION (Esprit). Approximately $20 million has been invested to date since 1988 and new programs of nearly $30 million are being funded for the next 3 years. National projects in certain countries may globally double these amounts. Neural network conferences are attracting larger audiences than ever before. Prior to 1987 attendance never surpassed 300. The June 1989 IJCNN conference in Washington had over 2200 participants.
