Book Synopsis The Politics of Civic Space in Asia by : Amrita Daniere
Download or read book The Politics of Civic Space in Asia written by Amrita Daniere and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how and why civic spaces are used by different communities in Asia and what role urban governance and public participation play in the support or demise of communities. Using case studies of contemporary city life throughout, the contributors provide insights into the importance and value of civic space, arguing that civic spaces provide not only the physical sites for civil society to function autonomously; but also provide a sense of place in the form of identity, meaning, memory, history and linkages with the wider world. Each chapter focuses on the production of and access to civic spaces in a particular Asian city, as well as examples of successes and failures that can inform urban policy regarding inclusive, tolerant and socially vibrant city life through focused attention on the provision and continuity of civic space. This book is designed to provide information to policymakers, researchers and students of the developing world regarding the importance and value of civic space in terms of creating and supporting urban communities. As such, The Politics of Civic Space in Asia will be an invaluable resource for those interested in urban planning, urban design, public policy and political science, as well as Asian studies more generally.

Book Synopsis Adventures in Indonesia by : Marta Hoilman
Download or read book Adventures in Indonesia written by Marta Hoilman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-11-24 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, the years 2000-2002 were characterized by a painful and rocky transition to democracy, as well as by the difficult aftermath of 9/11. For Marta Hoilman, living in Jakarta during this time not only meant dealing with the ramifications of such historic events, but also meant grappling with the often maddening, frequently funny, and sometimes terrifying challenges of expatriate life in a developing country. Just how do you maintain a low profile while being several heads taller and several shades blonder than the local population? What type of shoe is best to kill an Asian cockroach the size of a D battery? And what forces are behind the Great Fresca Drought? The tales in Adventures in Indonesia chronicle with humor and generosity of spirit the follies, foibles and joys of expatriate life in Indonesia from presidential impeachment, to earthquakes and floods, through evacuation and familial separation.
Book Synopsis Tourism, Heritage and National Culture in Java by : Heidi Dahles
Download or read book Tourism, Heritage and National Culture in Java written by Heidi Dahles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on anthropological fieldwork in the 1990s, this book provides an ethnographic perspective in its examination of the politics and policies of cultural tourism as they were played out under the Indonesian New Order regime. The successful New Order tourism policy ensured that tourism development both contributed to, and benefited from, increasing economic prosperity and a long stretch of political stability. However, that success has come at a price; the policy to encourage mainly 'high-quality' tourism revolved around carefully constructed and controlled tourist experiences that have led to local inequalities. The failure of this policy is analysed in a detailed case study of the city of Yogyakarta.

Book Synopsis The Quirky Kampung Tales Of Ijan And His Early School Years by : Saiful Lizan Muhamed
Download or read book The Quirky Kampung Tales Of Ijan And His Early School Years written by Saiful Lizan Muhamed and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is generally written in a humorous tone but there are poignant moments in the book where the narration takes on a more serious or sad tone where they are needed. The book is about the growing up years of a boy called Ijan who grew up in a fast-developing Singapore in the 1970s and 1980s in two different villages or “kampung” as they are called in Singapore. Although the concept or notion of a “kampung” is now gone in the developed city of Singapore, the book invites the readers to take a journey back to a historical Singapore as a backdrop. Ingrained in the ways of the village, Ijan the “kampung” boy had also attended schools which were very structured and the schools were where his parents were teachers. As a “kampung” boy, Ijan was accustomed to his roaming ways and as a teacher’s son, he was expected to behave. This was further compounded where it seemed Ijan’s DNA had been “hardwired” with the characteristics of what was known in the village as a “pusar dua” anomaly. He was born with two hair whirls at the back of his head! This led to a somewhat disorderly hair disposition for Ijan but more significantly, the villagers believed this anomaly brought with it certain traits to the “afflicted” boy. It was believed that a “pusar dua” boy would be a maverick of sorts, hyperactive and stubborn to say the least. He was also believed to be blessed with a very endearing character, especially to animals. The interesting contrast in environment, character and expectations are the themes that carry the narration in this book with Ijan as the protagonist.

Download or read book Ratline written by Peter Levenda and published by Nicolas-Hays, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ratline is the documented history about the mechanisms by which thousands of other Nazi war criminals fled to the remotest parts of the globe—including quite possibly Adolf Hitler. It is a story involving Soviet spies, Nazi priests, and a network of Catholic monasteries and safe houses known as the ratline. The name of one priest in particular, Monsignor Draganovic, was discovered by the author in a diary found in Indonesia. Why would this name turn up in a document written in a spidery German hand in a remote island in Indonesia? As famed author Peter Levenda began his research, more information came to light: In December of 2009, it was revealed that the skull the Russians claimed was Hitler’s—salvaged from the bunker in 1945—was not that of Hitler! In 2010, files from the Office of Special Investigations of the Justice Department were declassified, revealing a history of American intelligence providing cover for Nazi war criminals. The mystery deepened, and the author returned to his own roots hunting Nazis in North America, South America and Europe. He revisited old contacts, made some new ones, and gradually the explosive story was revealed: there is no forensic evidence to prove that Adolf Hitler died in the bunker in April 1945!

Download or read book Back Door Java written by Janice Newberry and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the densely populated urban neighbourhoods of Java, women manage their houses and their communities through daily exchanges of food, childcare, and labour. Their domestic work is based on local ideas of community cooperation and support, but also on the Indonesian government's use of women as unpaid social workers. Consequently, women are a pivotal point in both state-sponsored programs of domesticity and in the local practice of community exchange managed from individual houses. Back Door Java explores the everyday lives of ordinary urban Javanese from a new perspective on domestic space and the state. Using rich ethnographic description of a neighbourhood in Central Java, Newberry illuminates the ways in which state rule is intimately connected to the household and the community.
