Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays studies the cultural and literary contexts of narrative texts produced in English Canada over the last forty years. It takes as its starting point the nationalist movement of the 1960s and 70s, when the supposed absence or weakness of a national sense became the touchstone for official discourses on the cultural identity of the country. That type of metaphor provided the nation with the distinctive elements it was looking for and contributed to the creation of a sense of tradition that has survived to the present. In the decades following the 1970s, however, critics, artists, and writers have repeatedly questioned such a model of national identity, still fragile and in need of articulation, by reading the nation from alternative perspectives such as multiculturalism, environmentalism, (neo)regionalism, feminism, or postcolonialism. These contributors suggest that the artistic and cultural flowering Canada is experiencing at the beginning of the twenty-first century is, to a great extent, based on the dismantlement of the images constructed to represent the nation only forty years ago. Through their readings of representative primary texts, their contextual analysis, and their selected methodological tools, the authors offer a tapestry of alternative approaches to that process of dismantlement. Together, they read as an unruly Penelopiad, their unravelling readings self-consciously interrogating Canada’s (lack of) ghosts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dylan Emmons has always lived his life in two worlds. Diagnosed with Asperger's at the age of six, his school days were spent struggling to overcome the sensory and social hurdles that made fitting in with his classmates in the 'real world' so hard. An aspiring social chameleon, he attempted to blend in, despite his hidden other world of Asperger's. This book tells the story of his attempt, with the hindsight gained in adult life that it is better to spend energy learning to be happy, than learning to be 'normal'. By describing the two conflicting worlds of his childhood, Dylan Emmons reveals the reasons behind the actions, mood swings and awkwardness of children on the autism spectrum that can often appear mysterious and unprovoked to neurotypical family members, friends, teachers and professionals.

Book excerpt: Fatherhood is no longer a playground--it's a battleground. The demands placed on fathers have never been greater, yet neither has the importance of a father's role in the life of his child. This creates a dilemma: how can fathers balance career and family while connecting with their children in a meaningful and intentional way? In Daddy Saturday, Justin Batt will show you how. Justin has spent over 13,000 hours on Saturdays over the past 11 years engaging his children with intentionality. In this easy-to-follow guide, Justin walks fathers through the steps to creating their own Daddy Saturdays--from how to achieve peak performance as a dad, to connecting with your child's heart and mind. You'll learn tactical ideas to implement daily with your children, and understand how to create epic memories that will change the trajectory of their lives forever. Being seen as a great father in the eyes of your children and raising fantastic kids who become productive, confident, happy adults is the dream of every father. Daddy Saturday is a national movement every father can join to help them bring that dream to life.
