Book Synopsis 1994 Forest, Range & Recreation Resource Analysis by : British Columbia. Ministry of Forests
Download or read book 1994 Forest, Range & Recreation Resource Analysis written by British Columbia. Ministry of Forests and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Columbia's Ministry of Forests Act requires a forest and range resource analysis to be completed every tenth year after September 30, 1984. This document is the third such analysis, presenting information relevant to current issues in provincial forest resource management as a foundation for developing future resource management policy. After an overview of the province's forest ecosystem, this report introduces important resource values associated with British Columbia forests. Inventories and statistics are provided on areas and volumes of timber harvested and regenerated, range condition and use, forest recreation activity, value of botanical forest products, and supply and demand for timber, range, and recreation resources. The report also describes the timber supply review process and how the annual allowable cut is determined. Finally, it describes provincial forest policy and programs and makes projections of future supply and demand of forest resources.

A concise examination of B.C. historical geography follows, covering First Nations ways of life, colonization, Asian immigration, and the sad history of institutionalized racism. Book Synopsis In Search of Sustainability by : Benjamin Cashore
Download or read book In Search of Sustainability written by Benjamin Cashore and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the forests of British Columbia have become a battleground for sustainable resource development. The conflicts are ever present, usually pitting environmentalists against the forest industry and forestry workers and communities. In an effort to broker peace in the woods, British Columbia's NDP government launched a number of promising new forest policy initiatives in the 1990s. In Search of Sustainability brings together a group of political scientists to examine this extraordinary burst of policy activism. Focusing on how much change has occurred and why, the authors examine seven components of BC forest policy: land use, forest practices, tenure, Aboriginal issues, timber supply, pricing, and jobs.
Book Synopsis Unbuilt Environments by : Jonathan Peyton
Download or read book Unbuilt Environments written by Jonathan Peyton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the latter half of the twentieth century, legions of industrial pioneers came to northwestern British Columbia with grand plans for mines, dams, and energy-development schemes. Yet many of their projects failed to materialize or were abandoned midstream. Unbuilt Environments reveals that these lapsed resource projects had lasting effects on the natural and human environment. Drawing on a range of case studies to analyze the social and environmental impacts of unfinished projects, Jonathan Peyton considers development failure a productive concept for northwestern Canada. He looks at a closed asbestos mine, an abandoned rail grade, an imagined series of hydroelectric installations, a failed LNG export facility, and a transmission line – and finds that these unrealized developments continue to shape contemporary resource conflicts.

Download or read book Second Growth written by Sean Markey and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broader political and economic changes are dramatically reshaping rural and small-town communities in British Columbia and across Canada. Increasingly, however, much of the responsibility for community-based prosperity and survival is falling to communities themselves. This book is drawn from a three-year participatory research project with four communities in British Columbia: two municipalities and two Aboriginal communities. The first part of the book examines historical and contemporary forces of restructuring, linking the development of rural communities with the legacy of resource development and Aboriginal marginalization across the province. The second part of the book presents the theoretical and practical dynamics of the community economic development (CED) process and outlines a variety of strategies communities can initiate to diversify their local economies. Second Growth advances understanding of local development by addressing two important deficiencies in the CED literature. First, CED is a rapidly expanding field that requires enhanced theoretical direction and historical analysis. Second, there is a need for systematic case study analyses of CED strategies in rural, small-town conditions. As communities struggle to confront complex forces of change, sound theoretical frameworks and tested best practices are important tools in facilitating the prospects for a second growth in rural and small-town communities. The book will appeal to educators and students of rural and economic geography, policy makers, and citizens who wish to better understand the transformations taking place across the rural landscape.
