Book excerpt: What role does feminist pedagogy play in transforming social memory? How are feminist theory and the debates in the feminist movement reflected in the field of social memory? What feminist pedagogical approaches are being developed in women’s and gender museums and sites of memory and how are they implemented? All these and similar questions are discussed in the book Feminist Pedagogy: Museums, Memory Sites, Practices of Remembrance. It includes examples of feminist pedagogical practice from ten countries, illustrating approaches of women's museums to find answers to the question of what relationship there is between (public) “forgetting”, “remembering” and “diversity”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the question of how and to what extent the ongoing neoliberal transformation of higher education exerts influence on the university and academic everyday life in different societies. By listening to, observing, and comparing the critical voices of academics and students – the voices that matter – the book reviews first hand experiences from different societies and university cultures located within the European and semi-Mediterranean landscape, including the Czech Republic, Morocco, Turkey, and United Kingdom. By bringing together original fieldworks combining the structural analysis of the neoliberal shift with the academic individual’s repositioning, struggle and response, the book documents a number of similarities and differences experienced in different academic cultures. The chapters present a rich variety of subjects, including academic labor, academic identity and knowledge production, (un)employment, (in)equality, academic feminism, oppression and resistance from ethnographic, political and sociological perspectives. This timely and insightful volume will appeal to researchers, academics, students and advocates of academic freedom from different disciplines and academic cultures whose agendas prioritize higher education policies, university systems, academic production and academic labor.

Book excerpt: The 12 September 1980 coup represented a ""milestone"" in Turkey, the consequences of which have shadowed the lives of the peoples of Turkey for more than thirty years. The coup was instrumental in the profound economic, political and social transformation of the country, while, on the other hand, it aimed at destroying any public opposition deemed likely to jeopardise the course of this transformation. The remembrance of the period as laden with experiences of profound transformation, alongsid ...

Book excerpt: Since 2000, there has been a considerable effort in Turkish cinema to come to terms with the military's intervention in politics and subsequent national trauma. It has resulted in an outpouring of cinematic texts. This book focuses on women and Turkish cinema in the context of gender politics, cultural identity and representation. The central proposition of this book is that enforced depolticisation introduced after the coup is responsible for uniting feminism and film in 1980s Turkey. The feminist movement was able to flourish precisely because it was not perceived as political or politically significant. In a parallel move in the films of the 1980s there was an increased tendency to focus on the individual, on women's issues and lives, in order to avoid the overtly political. Women and Turkish Cinema provides a comprehensive view of cinema's approach to women in a country which straddles European and Middle Eastern cultural conceptions, identities and religious values and will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Film Studies, Gender Studies and Middle East Studies, amongst others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s archives appear to have been largely disregarded until the last couple of decades. Most countries lack well-documented archives, and the question of methodology has become a common concern and ever more significant for researchers. Aiming to contribute to the growing efforts of developing women’s archives, the present book brings together the works of numerous researchers from various disciplines. The researchers contributed to this volume in order to share information and experiences about the problems of sources and archives in women’s studies. The articles in the book not only analyse the problems encountered by researchers in the field of women’s studies, but also examine perceptions of women in collective memories. The book comprises five parts: Women’s Archives and Women’s Libraries; Art, Literature and Journal; Letters and Petitions; Oral History; and Cinema. All the articles present fresh ideas on the collective memory, perceptions, experiences, and the collection of documents on women. The aim is to present discussions about the works of oral, written, and visual culture that constitute the collective memory and to form accessible archives on an international level, thereby opening up new areas of research on this subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contest is afoot in Muslim discourses around the world in the twenty-first century. Prevalent norms and acts are subject to competing motivations, trends and forces. The image of a monolithic Islam is thus wholly inadequate to identify and interpret the different expressions of Muslim thought and practice in their specific yet connected contexts. This book proposes competing and persuasive perspectives for interpreting what Muslims say, do and think in collective settings or in the light of common frames of reference. The chapters contained in this book reflect a diversity of disciplines and interests. Nonetheless, a common thread of the preoccupation with meanings in context unites the contributors and the approaches to their chosen examples. Islam is not a discrete category that is taken for granted. Instead, the cacophony of voices in the Muslim world situated in specific contexts, variously national, regional or global, is allowed to inform each chapter. Here one encounters contemporary Muslims participating in discourses with a contested character that create opportunities to augment or question orthodox dictates or transmit or alter existing beliefs and practices. What emerges are nuanced portraits of contemporary Muslim thought and practice that reveal a far from monolithic Islam to which all things Islamic can be reduced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Silence, Voice and the In-Between: Exploring Gender, Race and Insecurity from the Margins seeks to dismantle the deficit discourses generated through research about people as agency-less and, by extension, objects of study. The book argues that, regardless of marginalisation, people create spaces of liminality where they seek control over their lives by navigating the structures that exclude them. Challenging the false binary of silence as violence and voice as power, the book introduces the idea of an in-between ‘liminal space’ which is created by people to navigate conditions of oppression and move towards a politically stable and inclusive world. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of gender studies, international development, peace and conflict studies, politics and international relations, sociology and media studies. It will be an important resource for courses incorporating gender, feminist and postcolonial perspectives.

In her latest exhibition, showing September 2013 in Istanbul, Lemos focuses on women's experiences and the frequent abuse of their self-respect. The exhibition consists of an installation that features seven evocative sculptures that refer to the brutal violations directly or indirectly affecting all women and short videos that contain fragmented images from the female unconscious, enhancing the metaphorical origin of the works.
