It focuses on the ways in which the legends embody and reflect the often changing social and religious needs of those who created and listened to them. Particular attention is paid to the earliest known collection of legends, Ananta-das's Kabir Parachai. This book makes available for the first time an English translation of this text, with detailed notes on its variant readings, as well as a corrected Hindi edition based on a comparison of over a dozen manuscripts. The various historical synchronisms between Kabir and his leading contemporaries, including Ramananda and King Virasimhadev Baghel, are reevaluated, and a solution is proposed to the longstanding debate about Kabir's dates.

The bases of selection of dohas from the Sakhi are: (1) Kabir`s proverbial and worldy wisdom, (2) analogy-finding gift, (3) richness and variety of imagery, (4) recurrent theme of death, (5) gift for satire, and (6) rhetorical powers. this introductory part primarily focusses on Kabir as poet, which is his `real estimate`. Thus, the introductory part is a piece of scholarly criticism judging and appreciating Kabir`s Sakhi on the canons of English literary criticism. The versification (four-line stanzaform in loose lambic tetrameter lines) has an easy flow and almost parallels the flow of Kabir`s dohas. With the Hindi version and notes, the book will be a valuable reading especially for the English-speaking readers.

It was an uprising against the rigid manifestation of dogmas and rituals among Hindus as well as oppression at the hands of Muslim rulers in the name of religion. They filled the Indian sacred hearts with doom and dread. Though all the poet-mystics of the time loved God in their own ways, Kabir worshipped, loved and venerated the Supreme-energy manifest as the primordial, formless, pure and the pristine. His verses show a spirit closer and akin to that of Sufis. Though lovelorn, Kabir was far from roaming among the clouds. He stood vociferously against the inane precepts and insane customs of his time involving merciless killings in the name of sacrifice. He also lashed back at the causeless and stupid conflicts between different religions and sects. Kabir’s mission lay in equating Ram with Rahim and bridging the gap between the two. His couplets came to be known down generations orally. They were later compiled in a book form called Bijak. In spite of him never holding a paper or pen all his life, his verses have regaled and enthralled Indian Hindi-knowing readers down the centuries and are often recited, sung and quoted to this day.

But we need to use words to communicate, so Kabir explains to his disciple that the Ultimate cannot be described in words, but must be experienced inwardly. He then describes various methods of approaching God, the negative actions to avoid, and the virtuous ones to be cultivated, as one progresses on the spiritual path to enlightenment. Kabir uses several Indian analogies and metaphors to explain the teachings to his earnest disciple.
