Book excerpt: "In 1870 there were close parallels between New Zealand and Australia. Each consisted of isolated settlements round an extended coastline, with sea travel the only ready means of communication. Each area developed its own local government. In New Zealand a central government controlled finance but with bitter inter-provincial jealousies the country lacked unity. Some hundred years ago Julius Vogel, the Colonial Treasurer, realised that the key to overall development lay in improved overland communications. To effect this, he established a central Public Works Department to build roads and railways between the settlements. This book is the story of that department over its first hundred years; its effect on the development of the country; its vicissitudes and its changing roles. The department has built roads, railways, power schemes, irrigation works, public buildings, highways, motorways and airports. This book also covers the growth of New Zealand as a nation. Illustrations fully cover the period ..." -- Inside front cover.

Book excerpt: JUNGLE COMICS #100The main character associated with the title is Kaanga. He appeared in every issue of Jungle Comics. When Kaanga was a child his parents died in the jungle and he was raised by apes. The reader never gets to know his real name or his ancestry, but the jungle is where Kaanga feels most at home. In the first issue Kaanga meets his mate Ann, who is a Jane clone, after he rescues her from a white slave trader named Bill Blackton. Ann then joins Kaanga in his jungle existence. After nearly ten years Kaanga was given his own title in Spring, 1949. This ran for 20 issues until the Summer of 1954. One of the reasons for the series demise was the formation of The Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory body that was formed because of moral concerns about the contents of many of the comics of the time. As much of Fiction House's material involved images of scantily clad women they withdrew from the market. Download or read book Bandits, Misfits, and Superheroes written by Josef Benson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted Finalist for the 2023 Eisner Award for Best Academic/Scholarly Work American comics from the start have reflected the white supremacist culture out of which they arose. Superheroes and comic books in general are products of whiteness, and both signal and hide its presence. Even when comics creators and publishers sought to advance an antiracist agenda, their attempts were often undermined by a lack of awareness of their own whiteness and the ideological baggage that goes along with it. Even the most celebrated figures of the industry, such as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Jack Jackson, William Gaines, Stan Lee, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, and Frank Miller, have not been able to distance themselves from the problematic racism embedded in their narratives despite their intentions or explanations. Bandits, Misfits, and Superheroes: Whiteness and Its Borderlands in American Comics and Graphic Novels provides a sober assessment of these creators and their role in perpetuating racism throughout the history of comics. Josef Benson and Doug Singsen identify how whiteness has been defined, transformed, and occasionally undermined over the course of eighty years in comics and in many genres, including westerns, horror, crime, funny animal, underground comix, autobiography, literary fiction, and historical fiction. This exciting and groundbreaking book assesses industry giants, highlights some of the most important episodes in American comic book history, and demonstrates how they relate to one another and form a larger pattern, in unexpected and surprising ways.
