Book excerpt: The increased number of English language learners in the general education classroom created the need for teachers to be knowledgeable about how to instruct and support English language learners. Due to the minimal extant literature related to K-12 teachers’ preparedness and training, specifically regarding English language learners, the purpose of this qualitative, interpretive study was to examine the perceptions of Tennessee K-12 teachers related to preparedness and training to provide instruction and support to English language learners in the general education classroom. I emailed the questionnaire to 63 potential participants and received questionnaire responses from 44 (69.84%) K-12 teachers. I analyzed the data using open, axial, and selective coding to generate three themes for my first research question and two themes for my second research question. K-12 teachers believed college coursework fell short of providing strategies, knowledge, and skills on instruction to English language learners in the general education classroom. Teacher preparedness could be improved with additional coursework and focused professional development related to English language learners in the general education classroom. Results also included K-12 teachers reported the need for more professional development to feel adequately prepared to provide instruction and support to English language learners.

Book excerpt: The achievement gap between English learners and non-English learners is wide in California; something must be done to close the gap. Research suggests university training of mainstream teachers in areas more specific to the needs of English learners may be helpful. However, there is limited research that follows graduates for one year after earning their teaching credential to explore if they believe they were provided adequate university training. My dissertation aimed to fill that gap. More specifically, I analyzed extensive survey data from teachers at their time of graduation from a California State University campus and one year later, after being in their own classroom. I focused on how well teachers feel their university prepared them to instruct English learners in their classrooms, using different quantitative approaches to analyze this topic. A paired samples t-Test indicated teachers felt less confident in their university preparation in all aspects related to teaching English learners one year after teaching compared to when they graduated. I also found that teachers felt more prepared to instruct English learners in their classrooms if they felt prepared in areas of classroom management, able to meet the needs of diverse students, able to meet the needs of special learners, capable of differentiating academic instruction, able to develop academic language for English learners, capable of teaching English learners by building on their prior abilities, were familiar with outside resources, and able to analyze a variety of evidence when assessing students. Deans of Education will get a better sense of a realistic feeling of teacher preparedness if they use survey data from one year after teaching to inform changes in their teacher education program. Beginning at the top level, university professors should take advantage of professional development opportunities that focus on teaching aspects that correlate to a preparation to teach English learners so they can create updated lesson plans for their teaching credential candidates. Teachers already employed at the school level would benefit from effective professional development training in areas that focus on instructing English learners. Further research would help ensure teachers' feeling of preparedness translates to improved student achievement.

Book excerpt: As the population of Learners of English as an Additional Language (LEALs) has increased steadily in mainstream classrooms over the last decade, mainstream classroom teachers are challenged with teaching situations for which they are not adequately prepared. Using a Complexity Theory and Mindfulness Mindset lens, this study examined self-perceived preparedness of 15 recently graduated teachers over the course of a 10-workshop series titled Teaching LEALs in Mainstream Classrooms. The following research questions guided the study: (a) How do teachers' perceptions of their preparedness to teach LEALs change during the workshop series? (b) How did the workshops contribute to changes in teachers' perceptions? Through datasets created from observational field notes, questionnaires, and semi-structured interview, workshop, and session documentation, this semester-long qualitative case study presents mainstream teachers' experiences and perceptions. Rather than providing a detailed and prescribed curriculum for change, attention is on the overall direction of teacher preparedness and fostering conditions for change and learning. Study findings capture the intricacies of mainstream teacher preparedness and indicate that change depends on adequate professional development that maximizes teachers' LEAL-related knowledge. However, in addition to knowledge, self-perceived levels of preparedness were influenced by the discomfort of disequilibrium, feedback, and embracing uncertainty. There are important implications for teacher education practice and professional certification. Ultimately, mainstream teacher training for LEALs cannot be optional. All teachers require targeted and intentional training to effectively address barriers to LEAL teaching and learning.
