Book excerpt: The orthodoxy on 'justification', a watershed between the Roman and Reformed churches, has recently been much under debate in theological circles as new perspectives are advanced to break down the traditional barriers on this key salvation doctrine. Westminster Theological Seminary holds a respected place in the Reformed world as a trainer of future ministers and influencers in the church. What is their take on the issue? Is it all just an attempt to fit square pegs into round holes or are the holes already square? Members of the faculty here contribute the results of their investigations into the basis of the doctrine by looking at scripture, church history, apologetics and pastoral outworkings. This comprehensive study of the doctrine will enable you to look with clear eyes on the issues at stake in this key discussion for the future of the church. A Bibliography is also provided for further study of the subject. Westminster Theological Seminary was founded in 1929 as a seminary dedicated to education in the Reformed tradition. It grew out of Princeton Seminary with a conviction that the Bible is the only infallible rule of Christian faith and practice. Westminster was created specifically to carry on old Princeton's tradition of heart piety and solid learning. The faculty subscribes to the Westminster Confession of Faith. Contributors include Sinclair B. Ferguson, Richard B. Gaffin Jr., Lane G. Tipton, Peter A. Lillback, Carl R. Trueman, Jeffrey K. Jue, William Edgar, J. Stafford Carson, Alexander Finlayson. Also includes a full reprint of John Murray's classic "The Imputation of Adam's Sin."

Book excerpt: My book is not divinely inspired. God has already said all that people need. This book is about showing what divine revelation revealed and how people altered the revelation. Simply stated, this book is about opening the blinded eyes of people. The god of this world is in the business of blinding the eyes of humanity. Now it is time to allow Jesus to open our eyes so that saints can be created to fight back with all the authority of our Mighty Creator. Hermeneutics and homilies have discredited Him to the point that He is not known or recognized or respected as our Creator. This leads us to the ultimate problem that is stated in the Bible's golden text of John 3:16.After years of teaching behind the pulpit, Harrell Reynolds realized his doctrine was different from Jesus's, so stopped talking and started listening. This book is a result of his listening. Reynolds found contradictions between his teaching and Christ's, so this book strives to address those contradictions from a biblical, Christlike standpoint to help you avoid making the same assumptions. Tackling tough issues like unbelief, sainthood, and a better understanding of God's Word, this book will help answer your questions, while always pointing you back to the Bible. You'll learn how to draw inspiration from biblical characters like Mary, Moses, Sarai, and more, and revisit some of the same biblical lessons, ensuring that you can hear from God the same way that they did. You'll see the importance of God's words and learn to put them into action in your own life and make them your own words. If you're searching for the truth, this book will help point you in the right direction.

Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.

As some stray from the long-held Reformation view and understanding of justification by faith alone, we felt it necessary to add a new chapter by Don Kistler. His chapter shows that any addition to what Christ has done becomes total subtraction in this vital area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Living by faith" is much more than a general Christian precept; it is the fundamental posture of believers in a world rife with suffering and injustice. In this penetrating reflection on the meaning of "justification," Oswald Bayer shows how this key religious term provides a comprehensive horizon for discussing every aspect of Christian theology, from creation to the end times. Inspired by and interacting with Martin Luther, the great Christian thinker who grappled most intensely with the concept of justification, Bayer explores anew the full range of traditional dogmatics (sin, redemption, eschatology, and others), placing otherwise complex theological terms squarely within their proper milieu -- everyday life. In the course of his discussion, Bayer touches on such deep questions as the hidden nature of God, the hope for universal justice, the problem of evil, and -- one of the book's most engaging motifs -- Job's daring lawsuit with God.

He joined the Free Church of Scotland in 1843, and succeeded Thomas Chalmers as professor of systematic theology at the New College of the Free Church in Edinburgh in 1847, a post he held for twenty-one years. Buchanan's magnum opus was The Doctrine of Justification, which still has great value as a classic treatment of the article by which Martin Luther says the church stands or falls. He covers biblical, systematic, and historical ground in his work, but is never far from a warm-hearted evangelical delight in the doctrines he is expounding.

Book excerpt: Are Christians merely forgiven, or do they possess the righteousness of Christ? Recently the time-honored understanding of the doctrine of justification has come under attack. Many question how-or if-we receive the full righteousness of Christ. Martin Luther said that if we understand justification "we are in the clearest light; if we do not know it, we dwell in the densest darkness." And now, in this new and important book, John Piper accepts Luther's challenge. He points out that we need to see ourselves as having been recipients of the imputation of Christ's righteousness and therefore enjoy full acceptance with God and the everlasting inheritance of life and joy. Piper writes as both a pastor and a scholar. His pastor's heart is shown in his zeal for the welfare of the church. His careful scholarship is evident in each explanation and undergirds each conclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written of late about what the apostle Paul really meant when he spoke of justification by faith, not the works of the law. This short study by Stephen Westerholm carefully examines proposals on the subject by Krister Stendahl, E. P. Sanders, Heikki Raisanen, N. T. Wright, James D. G. Dunn, and Douglas A. Campbell. In doing so, Westerholm notes weaknesses in traditional understandings that have provoked the more recent proposals, but he also points out areas in which the latter fail to do justice to the apostle. Readers of this book will gain not only a better grasp of the ongoing theological debate about justification but also a more nuanced overall understanding of Paul.

Book excerpt: Is faith in Jesus enough for salvation? Perhaps, says Matthew Bates, but we're missing pieces of the gospel. The biblical gospel can never change. Yet our understanding of the gospel must change. The church needs an allegiance shift. Popular pastoral resources on the gospel are causing widespread confusion. Bates shows that the biblical gospel is different, fuller, and more beautiful than we have been led to believe. He explains that saving faith doesn't come through trust in Jesus's death on the cross alone but through allegiance to Christ the king. There is only one true gospel and one required response: allegiance. Bates ignited conversation with his successful and influential book Salvation by Allegiance Alone. Here he goes deeper while making his acclaimed teaching on salvation more accessible and experiential for believers who want to better understand and share the gospel. Gospel Allegiance includes a guide for further conversation, making it ideal for church groups, pastors, leaders, and students.

Book excerpt: The opposition against legalism and Antinomianism is one fight that Calvin, the Westminster Divines, and Walter Marshall were involved in. Both errors are strongly connected, and we are prone to swing between these two errors. Each of them leads to the other. When we think that being forgiven in Christ means that we are not bound to the law, we fall into Antinomianism. As a reaction against Antinomianism, we can go to the other extreme, which is legalism. In legalism, we try to secure obedience by making it the condition for our salvation, and hence it becomes a heavy burden. The final result of this swinging is despair, which leads to hatred of the law and subsequently of God. The swinging between these two errors can only be broken by the gospel.
