Book Synopsis Justification Reconsidered by : Stephen Westerholm
Download or read book Justification Reconsidered written by Stephen Westerholm and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written of late about what the apostle Paul really meant when he spoke of justification by faith, not the works of the law. This short study by Stephen Westerholm carefully examines proposals on the subject by Krister Stendahl, E. P. Sanders, Heikki Raisanen, N. T. Wright, James D. G. Dunn, and Douglas A. Campbell. In doing so, Westerholm notes weaknesses in traditional understandings that have provoked the more recent proposals, but he also points out areas in which the latter fail to do justice to the apostle. Readers of this book will gain not only a better grasp of the ongoing theological debate about justification but also a more nuanced overall understanding of Paul.

Book Synopsis Justification by the Word by : Jack D. Kilcrease
Download or read book Justification by the Word written by Jack D. Kilcrease and published by Lexham Academic. This book was released on 2022-09-21 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's Word creates what he commands In Justification by the Word, Jack D. Kilcrease reintroduces Martin Luther's key doctrine. Though a linchpin of the Reformation, Luther's view of justification is often misunderstood. For Luther, justification is an expression of God's creative Word. To understand Luther on justification, one must grasp his doctrine of the Word. The same God who declared "let there be light"—and it was so—also declares "your sins are forgiven." Justification is an objective reality. It is achieved in Christ's resurrection and received through an encounter with the risen Christ in Word and sacrament. Justification turns us outward, away from our own unsteady feelings and limited understanding, to look to Christ. And the church must preach justification, lest we so easily forfeit the joy of the gospel. Justification by the Word inspires readers to reencounter the radical doctrine of justification by faith alone.

Book Synopsis Pneumatology and Union by : Peter Ross
Download or read book Pneumatology and Union written by Peter Ross and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Ross examines how John Calvin might assist Pentecostals in the development of a global Pentecostal theology by examining the views of each on pneumatology and the Christian’s union with Christ. He conducts a conversation between the two within the contexts of the assurance of faith; providence and guidance; and justification—each an area in which the Spirit and the union are substantially involved for both parties. He also looks closely at Spirit release, showing that this Pentecostal distinctive can sit well as an extension from Calvin’s thought. Ross shows that affinities exist between Pentecostals and Calvin in these contexts. These affinities clearly identify Calvin’s thought as a rich resource for Pentecostals; one they should not hesitate to mine as they develop their own global theology.

Book Synopsis Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation by : David Mark Rathel
Download or read book Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation written by David Mark Rathel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century English minister Andrew Fuller lived a consequential life, debating noteworthy contemporaries such as Thomas Paine and contributing to the pioneering international work of William Carey. However, his soteriology remains his most significant theological contribution. Fuller explored the role that human agency plays in salvation's reception, and he offered substantive theological proposals that many religious historians now credit with advancing the Evangelical Revival. Fuller's work was both traditional and creative. He sought faithfulness to the broader Protestant tradition but developed that tradition in unique and contextually relevant ways. Despite Fuller's influence, much research into his life and work remains. Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation examines heretofore underutilized primary sources related to Fuller's theological development. It attends to neglected texts produced by Fuller's opponents and mentors. Analysing these sources provides a fresh reading of Fuller's historical setting, one that contextualizes his theology and illuminates his constructive work on faith as a human response to the Gospel. This new interpretation allows scholars to discern more accurately the concepts that animated Fuller, the persons he sought to refute, and the sources on which he relied. This interpretation of Fuller challenges assumptions in contemporary scholarship and raises new questions for further research.
