Book excerpt: A haunting dream that will not relent pulls author Kent Nerburn back into the hidden world of Native America, where dreams have meaning, animals are teachers, and the “old ones” still have powers beyond our understanding. In this moving narrative, we travel through the lands of the Lakota and the Ojibwe, where we encounter a strange little girl with an unnerving connection to the past, a forgotten asylum that history has tried to hide, and the complex, unforgettable characters we have come to know from Neither Wolf nor Dog and The Wolf at Twilight. Part history, part mystery, part spiritual journey and teaching story, The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo is filled with the profound insight into humanity and Native American culture we have come to expect from Nerburn’s journeys. As the American Indian College Fund has stated, once you have encountered Nerburn’s stirring evocations of America’s high plains and incisive insights into the human heart, “you can never look at the world, or at people, the same way again.”

Book excerpt: Published in 1993, this brave, original novel is considered to be the finest account ever written of the complexities of a transgendered existence. Woman or man? Thats the question that rages like a storm around Jess Goldberg, clouding her life and her identity. Growing up differently gendered in a blue--collar town in the 1950s, coming out as a butch in the bars and factories of the prefeminist 60s, deciding to pass as a man in order to survive when she is left without work or a community in the early 70s. This powerful, provocative and deeply moving novel sees Jess coming full circle, she learns to accept the complexities of being a transgendered person in a world demanding simple explanations: a he-she emerging whole, weathering the turbulence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intriguing tale (not for children), storyteller extraordinaire Ursula K. Le Guin explores the magic of animals. Her animal characters -- from the irreverent trickster Coyote to the wise matriarch Grandmother Spider -- seem like people to us, just as they do to the little girl who finds herself living among them. We learn, with the girl, that these "Old People" once lived freely on the earth but now must maintain their lifeways carefully alongside the "New People" -- humans. Susan Seddon Boulet chose this tale to illustrate, completing twenty works for its publication. They are extremely effective in bringing Le Guin's characters to life, imbuing them, of course, with Boulet's singular vision of the otherworldly realms occupied by animal spirits. This book is a must for any serious collector of Boulet art.

Book excerpt: A strange old woman caked in Montana mud pens a letter to her darling daughter back East—the writer's name is Martha Jane, but her friends call her Calamity... I am the Wild West, no show about it. I was one of the people who kept it wild. Larry McMurtry returns to the territory of his Pulitzer Prize–winning masterwork, Lonesome Dove, to sing the song of Calamity Jane's last ride. In a letter to her daughter back East, Martha Jane is not shy about her own importance. Martha Jane—better known as Calamity—is just one of the handful of aging legends who travel to London as part of Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show in Buffalo Girls. As he describes the insatiable curiosity of Calamity's Indian friend No Ears, Annie Oakley's shooting match with Lord Windhouveren, and other highlights of the tour, McMurtry turns the story of a band of hardy, irrepressible survivors into an unforgettable portrait of love, fellowship, dreams, and heartbreak.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • With his trademark emotional heft and storytelling skill, the bestselling author of The Flight Attendant presents a resonant novel about the unconventional family that forms after Terry and Laura Sheldon, a Vermont storm trooper and his wife grieving the loss of their twin daughters, take in a foster child. His name is Alfred; he is ten years old and African American. And he has passed through so many indifferent families that he can’t believe that his new one will last. In the ensuing months Terry and Laura will struggle to emerge from their shell of grief only to face an unexpected threat to their marriage; Terry’s involvement with another woman. Meanwhile, Alfred cautiously enters the family circle, and befriends an elderly neighbor who inspires him with the story of the buffalo soldiers, the black cavalrymen of the old West. Out of the entwining and unfolding of their lives, The Buffalo Soldier creates a suspenseful, moving portrait of a family, infused by Bohjalian’s moral complexity and narrative assurance. Book excerpt: Novelist Floyd Salas charts his dramatic coming of age in the conflicting shadows of two older brothers: one a drug addict and petty criminal, the other an intellectual prodigy. Through intense, passionate prose, Salas takes us through the seedy bars, boxing rings and jails of his youth as he searches for his own true identity amid the tragedies that envelope his family. Buffalo Nickel is an autobiography that reads like a well-crafted novel in its recording of the excessive human costs of addiction. Aspiring to be like his older brothers at first leads Floyd to excel as an athlete and charmer, but unfortunately, following in his brotherÍs footsteps also draws the young man into the darker side of life. As Floyd struggles to reform his own life, he is forever and futilely pushing Al to mend his ways. The struggle of the inveterate criminal and the co-dependent relative is dramatically maintained throughout the work until both personalities finally arrive at the definitive plateau of self-knowledge.

Book excerpt: When I started writing my first western I began without a story, a title but with two unwashed characters that hated each other at first in the dark, filthy, cluttered log cabin so remotely embedded in the Canadian snow covered woods that escape on foot was impossible. After two murders occurred our heroine Marie is alone, raised without affection or a smile with only a fur trapper father escaped from prison. She finds herself alone until Peter Mark with a broken leg is fished out of the river with his horse and wagon. After months of fighting and distrust in the filthy hovel, they find love and Peter begins the trek to his home in Nevada in a wagon with Marie. They come to a Nez Perce village where Peter trades with Chief Joseph for three white women and continues south through Flathead land and into Shoshoni Territory where Chief Running Deer learns the buffalo follow Peter and thinks he controls them and calls him the Spirit of The Buffalo. With two scouts from the Nez Perce, two from the Flathead and two from Chief Running Deer they continue south and the scouts leave them at Fort Bryant. Peter thinks hell take Marie to his house but Running Deer decides to burn the fort and sends word to the Spirit of The Buffalo. Take everyone out of the fort and all that ride with you are safe. Col. Williams decides to stay and defend but Peter takes the women and children to Fort Halleck as Running Deer attacks Fort Bryant. Peter and Marie adopt Linda, the youngest of the three captive females they traded for with Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. Thats not half of the story but youll dry your eyes before turning the last page of the Spirit of The Buffalo and when the sequel, War Chief comes out, youll cry again and better understand our Native American brothers.

Wilson should have just walked away when three men came looking for a way to boost a valuable piece of art. The art came off the wall, the alarm screamed thief, and Wilson walked away clean. But it turned out that job was an interview for an even bigger heist. A dangerous man wants Wilson to get him something more valuable than a painting. Problem is Wilson only has a week. Wilson and his crew cross the Canadian border to Buffalo, New York, to steal a two-hundred-year-old violin. A lot of people are interested in getting their hands on the instrument—and none of them are shy about killing to get it. Book excerpt: Based on true-life histories, Buffalo Flats shares the epic, coming of age story of Rebecca Leavitt as she searches for her identity in the Northwest Territories of Canada during the late 1800s. Seventeen-year-old Rebecca Leavitt has traveled by covered wagon from Utah to the Northwest Territories of Canada, where her father and brothers are now homesteading and establishing a new community with other Latter-Day Saints. Rebecca is old enough to get married, but what kind of man would she marry and who would have a girl like her—a girl filled with ideas and opinions? Someone gallant and exciting like Levi Howard? Or a man of ideas like her childhood friend Coby Webster? Rebecca decides to set her sights on something completely different. She loves the land and wants her own piece of it. When she learns that single women aren’t allowed to homestead, her father agrees to buy her land outright, as long as Rebecca earns the money —480 dollars, an impossible sum. She sets out to earn the money while surviving the relentless challenges of pioneer life—the ones that Mother Nature throws at her in the form of blizzards, grizzles, influenza and floods, and the ones that come with human nature, be they exasperating neighbors or the breathtaking frailty of life. Buffalo Flats is inspired by true-life histories of the author’s ancestors. It is an extraordinary novel that explores Latter-Day Saints culture and the hardships of pioneer life. It is about a stubborn, irreverent, and resourceful young woman who remains true to herself and discovers that it is the bonds of family, faith, and friendship—even romance--that tie her to the wild and unpredictable land she loves so fiercely.
