Book Synopsis The Courtesan and the Gigolo by : Aaron Freundschuh
Download or read book The Courtesan and the Gigolo written by Aaron Freundschuh and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intrigue began with a triple homicide in a luxury apartment building just steps from the Champs-Elyseés, in March 1887. A high-class prostitute and two others, one of them a child, had been stabbed to death—the latest in a string of unsolved murders targeting women of the Parisian demimonde. Newspapers eagerly reported the lurid details, and when the police arrested Enrico Pranzini, a charismatic and handsome Egyptian migrant, the story became an international sensation. As the case descended into scandal and papers fanned the flames of anti-immigrant politics, the investigation became thoroughly enmeshed with the crisis-driven political climate of the French Third Republic and the rise of xenophobic right-wing movements. Aaron Freundschuh's account of the "Pranzini Affair" recreates not just the intricacies of the investigation and the raucous courtroom trial, but also the jockeying for status among rival players—reporters, police detectives, doctors, and magistrates—who all stood to gain professional advantage and prestige. Freundschuh deftly weaves together the sensational details of the case with the social and political undercurrents of the time, arguing that the racially charged portrayal of Pranzini reflects a mounting anxiety about the colonial "Other" within France's own borders. Pranzini's case provides a window into a transformational decade for the history of immigration, nationalism, and empire in France.

Download or read book Losing the Plot written by Pardis Dabashi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is widely understood that the modernist novel sought to escape what Virginia Woolf called the "tyranny" of plot. Yet even as twentieth-century writers pushed against the constraints of Victorian, plot-driven novels, Pardis Dabashi shows that plot kept its hold on them through the influence of another medium: the cinema. Focusing on the novels of Nella Larsen, Djuna Barnes, and William Faulkner-writers known for their moviegoing affinities and connections to early film-Dabashi uses the relationship between literature and the cinema to reveal a profound longing for plot in modernist fiction. Dabashi links the moviegoing practices of Larsen, Barnes, and Faulkner to the tensions in their works, tensions between the formal properties of the novels and the characters in them. In making a distinction between what the novel is doing and what their characters desire, these authors ponder how it is one thing to withhold plot as a gesture of modernist aesthetics, and quite another to be denied the comfort of plot's architecture in one's living and breathing existence"--

Download or read book I'm a Gigolo written by Andrew Segal and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He's gorgeous, cool and slick. Small wonder those wealthy American dames are falling over themselves to taste his flirtatious skills, just where it counts. Seduction is the name of his game, and he knows how to keep a secret. Trouble is, our Gigolo is also a mischief maker, a man with a mission - to make a killing. So he's got a secret of his own. But, can he keep it that way? Deliciously sensual and a touch macabre, this collection of tales, I'm a Gigolo contains ten startlingly original and provocative short stories you'll need to be brave to read at bedtime. 5 Stars from Lisa Hall USA Book reviewer Witty, clever, saucy, seductive and naughty in equal measure - what's not to like? Leading with a story about a self-confessed and, some might say, self-obsessed, Gigolo, this collection of ten short stories is highly entertaining and diverse. The Gigolo story is blush-worthy and provocative, told with sprinkling of arrogance and peppered with humour throughout. I anticipated the following short stories to be just as saucy and was pleasantly surprised by their diverse content. All of the stories had a fabulously wicked side to them and I wonder if this is the author's naughty side shining through. I think the old couple was probably my second favourite of the tales (with the Gigolo in first place, of course) it was deliciously dark and hugely entertaining. Overall a fun collection of short stories with something for everyone.
