But instead, they’re trafficked to the Congo for a sinister purpose. In the heart of Africa, a cult of mad scientists harbors a mad ambition: to create a new species of human-ape hybrid, mating human women with chimpanzees. But their experiments are failures, so they need to bring a steady supply of women to their jungle compound to keep their twisted fantasy alive. Will the Action Girls escape their bizarre and terrifying ordeal? Or will they fulfill the cult’s warped vision of humanity’s future to become broodmares birthing inhuman monsters? Find out in Jungle Jitters, a story not for the faint-hearted, the easily offended, or anyone who thinks human-ape hybrids are a good idea.

Book excerpt: After the overwhelmingly successful premiere of Jungle Jitters, Jennifer, the leader of the Action Girls, is eager to make another jungle adventure movie, and she asks her regular scribe, J. Manfred Weichsel, to write it. His pitch? A three-hundred-mile-long giantess named Patty McGloop lies eternally on her back in the Mojave Desert, with a pubic hair region spanning seven miles from below her navel to between her thighs. Just as the Gargantua ray made Patty McGloop very big, it also enlarged the microscopic animals that live on her skin and hair. Wouldn’t it be fun to go exploring inside her pubic hair jungle in order to document all the interesting flora and fauna? The Action girls excitedly make all the preparations needed to shoot such a bizarre motion picture and take a helicopter to Patty McGloop’s navel, the gateway to her colossal realm. But when the girls become captive to a tribe of zealous lice, it’s up to Manfred to go on a daring mission into the bush to rescue them. About the author: Before he became America’s premier writer of subversive fiction, J. Manfred Weichsel cut his teeth in Hollywood, crafting screenplays for the notorious Action Girls, a trio of indie starlets whose on and off-screen antics captivated audiences throughout the 2010s. But while the glitz and glamor of Tinseltown may have seemed like a dream come true, insiders know that life with the Action Girls was anything but ordinary. Weichsel's days were a whirlwind of adrenaline and excess. Rumors of secret romances, bitter rivalries, and drunken nights on set only added fuel to the fiery saga of his Hollywood tenure. In this tell-all memoir, J. Manfred Weichsel dishes out the most salacious details on the making of their most notorious film, Into the Bush. Don't miss out on these behind-the-scenes revelations that will leave you laughing, gasping, and begging for more.

Book excerpt: The Palgrave Encyclopedia of American Horror Film Shorts chronicles for the first time over 1,500 horror and horror-related short subjects theatrically released between 1915, at the dawn of the feature film era when shorts became a differentiated category of cinema, and 1976, when the last of the horror-related shorts were distributed to movie theaters. Individual entries feature plot synopses, cast and crew information, and – where possible – production histories and original critical reviews. A small number of the short subjects catalogued herein are famous; such as those featuring the likes of Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, Bugs Bunny, and Daffy Duck; but the bulk are forgotten. The diverse content of these shorts includes ghosts, devils, witches, vampires, skeletons, mad scientists, monsters, hypnotists, gorillas, dinosaurs, and so much more, including relevant nonfiction newsreels. Their rediscovery notably rewrites many chapters of the history of horror cinema, from increasing our understanding of the sheer number horror films that were produced and viewed by audiences to shedding light on particular subgenres and specific narrative and historical trends.

Book excerpt: Film Composers in America is a landmark in the history of film. Here, renowned film scholar Clifford McCarty has attempted to identify every known composer who wrote background musical scores for films in the United States between 1911 and 1970. With information on roughly 20,000 films, the book is an essential tool for serious students of film and a treasure trove for film fans. It spans all types of American films, from features, shorts, cartoons, and documentaries to nontheatrical works, avant-garde films, and even trailers. Meticulously researched over 45 years, the book documents the work of more than 1,500 composers, from Robert Abramson to Josiah Zuro, including the first to score an American film, Walter C. Simon. It includes not only Hollywood professionals but also many composers of concert music--as well as popular music and other genres--whose cinematic work has never before been fully catalogued. The book also features an index that lets readers quickly find the composer for any American film through 1970. To recover this history, much of which was lost or never recorded, McCarty corresponded with or interviewed hundreds of composers, arrangers, orchestrators, musical directors, and music librarians. He also conducted extensive research in the archives of the seven largest film studios--Columbia, MGM, Paramount, RKO, 20th Century-Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros.--and wherever possible, he based his findings on the most reliable evidence, that of the manuscript scores and cue sheets (as opposed to less accurate screen credits). The result is the definitive guide to the composers and musical scores for the first 60 years of American film.

Book excerpt: Tweety Bird was colored yellow because censors felt the original pink made the bird look nude. Betty Boop's dress was lengthened so that her garter didn't show. And in recent years, a segment of Mighty Mouse was dropped after protest groups claimed the mouse was actually sniffing cocaine, not flower petals. These changes and many others like them have been demanded by official censors or organized groups before the cartoons could be shown in theaters or on television. How the slightly risque gags in some silent cartoons were replaced by rigid standards in the sound film era is the first misadventure covered in this history of censorship in the animation industry. The perpetuation of racial stereotypes in many early cartoons is examined, as are the studios' efforts to stop producing such animation. This is followed by a look at many of the uncensored cartoons, such as Lenny Bruce's Thank You Mask Man and Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. The censorship of television cartoons is next covered, from the changes made in theatrical releases shown on television to the different standards that apply to small screen animation. The final chapter discusses the many animators who were blacklisted from the industry in the 1950s for alleged sympathies to the Communist Party.

Book excerpt: "e;In the pre-Covid-19 era, being a digital globetrotter and getting to every country on earth seemed to be all the go, so Ian is certainly on to a trend"e; - Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely PlanetThe Christopher Columbus of the 2000s. - A true and breathtaking story of dedication, perseverance, and innovation in entrepreneurship and alternative living. A testimony of how to push the limits of human curiosity to new boundaries. What could you possibly learn from over twenty years spent circling around the globe, seventeen of them non-stop as a self-made digital entrepreneur? How much could your life change from exploring every single country of the world, a total of 230 countries including every single one of the 195 recognized by the United Nations? This is the account of an incredible journey with twists, turns, and perpetual adventures! Seventeen years living and working from a carry-on backpack, having only the bare essentials to live comfortably, along with a home office to fund travels through the wonder of passive income. The story of how a man destined to a promising engineering career became troubled by the prospect of living the rat race through a nine to five routine, triggering his nomadic instincts to choose a life where he dedicated every single day of his existence to living, breathing and experiencing freedom, adventure and wonder. An inspiring testimony of alternative ways to live life outside the beaten track that we've always known. A reflection on the level of freedom one can enjoy when granting himself the right to do so. A thirst for knowledge guided by a desire to encounter fellow citizens of the world, from tribesmen to royalty, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, by means of land, sea and air. A journey motivated by only one desire; discover the unknown and to live every single day as if it was the last.Giving up the security and comfort of western civilization is not the most intuitive thing to do. This is the story of a lifetime wanderlust dreamer who decides to throw away his freshly earned engineering diploma to risk an extraordinary path through life. The concept of online entrepreneurship was still unknown at the time, when this dreamer decided to pioneer a new lifestyle and go "e;all in"e; with a digital nomad set-up to fund his love of traveling. A journey that would slowly but surely guide him to and through every country of the world. A long voyage that invariably brought a catalog of juicy unexpected anecdotes. His habit to always test the territory and socialize in the most diverse situations brought him to infiltrate tribes in Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific Islands, join the ranks of surf communities on the most remote seas, and even share meals with Mongolian Nomads as well as Afghan ministers. His unorthodox style of traveling brought him to navigate the seven seas from cargo ships to yachts, crossing international borders through Jungles on motorbikes, and even boarding intercontinental trains through tens of thousands of kilometers, many times bringing him face to face with the reality of the world such as the horrors of war in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, while escaping the hands of terrorism on several occasions. This is the story of a restless adventurer with a zest for life.

Book excerpt: The headline of the Variety extra on October 27, 1926, proclaimed "Vitaphone1 Thrills L.A.!" Vitaphone, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. formed in association with Western Electric, was one of the major producers of talkies, even though its sound-on-disc technology barely lasted four years. The Vitaphone features and shorts that have survived intact, or that have been so carefully restored, preserve much of the show business history that might otherwise have been lost with the industry's fast-paced advances in movie making. This book is a catalogue of Vitaphone features and shorts. The first section lists the features and shorts by release number. The New York productions (1926-1940) are listed first, followed by the West Coast productions (1927-1970). For shorts, the following particulars, if known and if applicable, are given: title, alternate title(s), instrumental and vocal selections performed on screen, composer(s) and performers of instrumental and vocal selections, release date and synopsis of the film, names of major cast members and directors, set information if two or fewer sets were used, and the amount paid to early performers. For features, entries list release dates, genre, and major cast members. The section on performers includes only those who appeared in shorts, listing dates and places of birth when known.

Book excerpt: GIFT OF SYDNEY is an epic novel of the struggle to forge the multicultural, world-class city of Sydney, Australia. It is the second in the series of novels about the history of the city and Australia. In 1903, the wealthy and powerful Armstrongs are concerned about their "convict stain." The Fongs rail against the White Australia Policy that is driving Chinese out of Australia and preventing their relatives from immigrating. The Hudsons suffer under government programs that manage them as part of the vexing "Aboriginal problem." The country is rich from wool and gold but insecure. Its principal protector and trading partner, Britain, is 15,000 miles away. The three families all suffer in the world wars and the Great Depression, but experience a profound change when the racist White Australia Policy is finally rejected and a humanitarian policy opens the doors to accept the desperate Vietnamese boat people. Once again, Richards's storytelling is impeccably researched, fast paced, action-adventure driven, and full of family saga emotion and drama. His two extraordinary novels together have the authenticity and authority of the finest historical fiction that strike a resounding chord of hope for all humanity.
