Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine is news. There is constant public interest in health and disease; in medical miracles and in breakthroughs; in medical disasters, failures and malpraxis ; in deficiencies and defects ofhealth services; and in the rising costs ofhealth care. Medicine is 'big business'. Physicians co me out near the top money earners in most medical care systems. In the Uni ted Kingdom the National Health Service (NHS) now costs over [6000 million a year ($ ro 800 million), a free service that costs every British man, woman and child [120 a year ($216) in direct and indirect taxes. But this is less than the [500 ($900) a year that medical care costs each person in USA and West Germany. In developed countries health care costs are approaching ro% ofthe gross national product (GNP). It is big business also in that in Britain the NHS is one of the largest employers; about I million Britons work as employees of the NHS, caring for the other 54 millions and in the USA the numbers are 5 million caring for 2. 5 millions. The provision of health services is full of problems and dilemmas. These problems and dilemmas cross all' national boundaries. All countries share the same problems and dilemmas. Problems of objectives, of standards, of effectiveness and efficiency, and problems of relations between the medical profession, the public and govern ment. Medical care still is full of mystique.

They were, for many of you, painful years through which you fought your way valiantly, step by step, from Australia to the distant final objective, Japan. The magnificent manner in which our Division relentlessly met, defeated, and pursued the enemy shall forever be an inspiration to all military men who believe in Democracy and Freedom. “Herein are transcribed names and events which will help those who were not there to understand; and will be for those of us who stood together a permanent record of some of the experiences we shared. It is not possible to set down the full story in writing. Only a hint of the real hardships, sufferings and anxieties which we experienced; of the courage, determination, and heroism demonstrated in alt units, can be given. The full story can only be known by those who participated.”

These courageous women from across the globe-Pakistan, India, Romania, Former Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia-shared similar experiences of hardship, subjugation, and persecution, all because of their faith in Christ. Yet all of these women have emerged from adversity as leaders and heroines. The eight modern-day pilgrims featured in Hearts of Fire are the hidden jewels in the church universal. They are worthy role models of faith and passion, and women of every age will gain new strength and hope for their own times of crisis and trial as they read these inspiring stories. Each story concludes with thoughtful self-reflection questions for the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctor who can talk to the animals makes some mind-blowing lunar discoveries in this spacefaring adventure from the Newbery Medal–winning author. On the back of a gigantic moth, John Dolittle and his companions travel through space from London to the moon. And they make an interesting landing party indeed. There’s the esteemed doctor and naturalist, his secretary Thomas Stubbins, Polynesia the parrot, and Chee-Chee the monkey. Though their purpose on the moon is mysterious, Doctor Dolittle has much to explore once they discover the lush forests beyond the barren desert landscape that greets them. Strangely no animal life makes itself known, but the doctor soon learns to communicate with the flowers! But it’s the footprints of an apparent giant that hold the greatest fascination for the intrepid explorers—and just might reveal the moon’s greatest mystery . . . “Any child who is not given the opportunity to make the acquaintance of this rotund, kindly and enthusiastic doctor/naturalist and all of his animal friends will miss out on something important.” —Jane Goodall “Each generation cries for the moon in turn and the very newest one will find in these pages not something to cry for but something to completely satisfy their fleeting fancy.” —The Spectator

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his day, Raphael Cilento was one of the most prominent and controversial figures in Australian medicine. As a senior medical officer in the Commonwealth and Queensland governments, he was an active participant in public health reform during the inter-war years and is best known for his vocal engagement with public discourse on the relationship between hygiene, race and Australian nationhood. Yet Cilento’s work on tropical hygiene and social welfare ranged beyond Australia, especially when he served as a colonial medical officer in British Malaya and in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea. He also worked with the League of Nations Health Organization in the Pacific Islands and oversaw international social welfare programs for the United Nations. On one level, this professional mobility allowed ideas and practices of public health and government to circulate between colonial spaces of northern Australia, the Pacific Islands and Asia. On another, it meant that Cilento’s Pacific colonialism and colonial experience shaped his understanding of Australian national health and welfare. Rather than attempt a comprehensive biography of Cilento, this book instead uses this border-crossing career as a means to explore several material and discursive facets of Australia’s relationships to the Pacific and the world.
