Book Synopsis Militarizing the Border by : Miguel Antonio Levario
Download or read book Militarizing the Border written by Miguel Antonio Levario and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As historian Miguel Antonio Levario explains in this timely book, current tensions and controversy over immigration and law enforcement issues centered on the US-Mexico border are only the latest evidence of a long-standing atmosphere of uncertainty and mistrust plaguing this region. Militarizing the Border: When Mexicans Became the Enemy, focusing on El Paso and its environs, examines the history of the relationship among law enforcement, military, civil, and political institutions, and local communities. In the years between 1895 and 1940, West Texas experienced intense militarization efforts by local, state, and federal authorities responding to both local and international circumstances. El Paso’s “Mexicanization” in the early decades of the twentieth century contributed to strong racial tensions between the region’s Anglo population and newly arrived Mexicans. Anglos and Mexicans alike turned to violence in order to deal with a racial situation rapidly spinning out of control. Highlighting a binational focus that sheds light on other US-Mexico border zones in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Militarizing the Border establishes historical precedent for current border issues such as undocumented immigration, violence, and racial antagonism on both sides of the boundary line. This important evaluation of early US border militarization and its effect on racial and social relations among Anglos, Mexicans, and Mexican Americans will afford scholars, policymakers, and community leaders a better understanding of current policy . . . and its potential failure.

Book Synopsis Students' Guide to Programming Languages by : Malcolm Bull
Download or read book Students' Guide to Programming Languages written by Malcolm Bull and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students' Guide to Programming Languages introduces programming languages, emphasizing why they are needed, how they are defined and constructed, and where and how they are used. With greater access to computers at work, at school, and in the home, more and more people are now able to write programs. Only a small number of these people recognize the underlying features of the programming languages they are using, and even fewer people appreciate the features that are common to most programming languages. This book demonstrates how most programming languages are based upon the same concepts and how knowledge of these concepts can benefit the analyst and the programmer. When specifying computer solutions to real problems, the systems analyst and the programmer must be able to stand back from the particular problem in hand and visualize a solution that is independent of the constraints and limitations imposed by the programming language itself. The text helps in achieving these goals. The book as well is suitable for college students following BTEC and City and Guilds courses in computer studies and IT topics, including professional commercial and end-users.

Book excerpt: This highly illustrated book draws together the wide variety of studies in the learning of mathematics undertaken by the Pattern in Mathematics Research Group at the University of Leeds. Their purpose has been '... to provide structure and support to ... studies of children's perception, conception and use of pattern in learning mathematics'. Set up in 1992, they have embraced work across the whole curriculum, and through all the years of compulsory schooling. As each chapter of this book relates to a different study that was undertaken, the reader can dip in and select relevant material. At the same time, the editor has ensured continuity and progression, allowing the book to be approached as a whole: the early chapters are concerned with very young children; subsequent chapters deal with the primary and middle age ranges, and later ones relate to secondary school work. With individual chapters relating to number, algebra, shape, graphic relations and probability, this new volume provides guidance for teachers of pupils of all age groups. Patterns in mathematics are of immense importance; this book relates pattern to the teaching of mathematics through all years of school. Practical and original, it is closely tied to the National Curriculum. It is a source of new ideas for mathematic teachers at all levels.
