Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was created to be a user manual because it's not just technology that needs a guide; the human-machine also requires its instruction manual. By addressing a few conditions, one is able to prevent, cure, or at least improve most diseases. The question is: how to raise awareness among those who do not think about targeting the cause, but only the symptom? Creating guidelines for maintaining health and not just follow industry protocols for treating illnesses is the main goal of The Longevity Handbook. This book summarizes decades of research and offers new studies and findings to be applied for integral health: a new awareness about the functioning of the human-machine and how to get the most out of it, supply it with the best, achieve high performance, eliminate what hinders its operation, adjust all gears, and strengthen its system. With adjustments and prevention, this wonderful and perfect machine will have more longevity and, above all, quality of life while it is in operation. Unique formulas developed by the author based on vitamins, minerals, fibers, and probiotics available in foods and supplements are also presented in this book, along with their associated benefits, implications for immunity, and overall health. The purpose of this work is to serve as a source of information and research showing another view on the origin of diseases, which are often omitted or neglected in orthodox prevention and treatment. Examples are given on the benefits that can be achieved by stopping to use a single, common tool (drugs) and starting to treat the causes, using various sciences such as clinical nutrition, medical biochemistry, orthomolecular practice, phytotherapy, biophysics, homeopathy, homotoxicology, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An all-too-popular explanation for why black students aren't doing better in school is their own use of the "acting white" slur to ridicule fellow blacks for taking advanced classes, doing schoolwork, and striving to earn high grades. Carefully reconsidering how and why black students have come to equate school success with whiteness, Integration Interrupted argues that when students understand race to be connected with achievement, it is a powerful lesson conveyed by schools, not their peers. Drawing on over ten years of ethnographic research, Karolyn Tyson shows how equating school success with "acting white" arose in the aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education through the practice of curriculum tracking, which separates students for instruction, ostensibly by ability and prior achievement. Only in very specific circumstances, when black students are drastically underrepresented in advanced and gifted classes, do anxieties about "the burden of acting white" emerge. Racialized tracking continues to define the typical American secondary school, but it goes unremarked, except by the young people who experience its costs and consequences daily. The rich narratives in Integration Interrupted throw light on the complex relationships underlying school behaviors and convincingly demonstrate that the problem lies not with students, but instead with how we organize our schools.

Health for Everyone: A Guide to Politically and Socially Progressive Healthcare brings together experts across a range of healthcare and related disciplines to explore how we can make our healthcare system more progressive for groups that have been overlooked for too long. Rather than a health policy manual adopting a 30,000-foot view, this is a practical guide to start making healthcare more responsive, more patient-centered, and more community-led—right now, starting from present realities. Zackary Berger, a well-known primary care physician, activist, and bioethicist, has brought together teachers, clinicians, advocates, and researchers, to map the steps we need to take to provide better care to African American, Latinx, chronically ill, and disabled patients while improving the system overall for everyone Health for Everyone answers questions such as how do you provide the same care to every individual, when individuals are different? How do you get ideal care when you are a member of a disadvantaged group? What if you have a chronic condition that tends to get the short end of the stick, for which treatment might not be available, or be stigmatized? Focusing on a practical, yet ethical and philosophical case for progressive health care, this book focuses on what matters most to patients and on the steps we need to take to insure better health for everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide range of crop genetic resources is vital for future food security. Loss of agricultural biodiversity increases the risk of relying on a limited number of staple food crops. However, many laws, such as seed laws, plant varieties protection and access and benefit-sharing laws, have direct impacts on agrobiodiversity, and their effects have been severely underestimated by policy-makers. This is of concern not only to lawyers, but also to agronomists, biologists, and social scientists, all of whom need clear guidance as to the relevance of the law to their work. This book analyzes the impact of the legal system on agrobiodiversity (or agricultural biodiversity) – the diversity of agricultural species, varieties, and ecosystems. Using an interdisciplinary approach, it takes up the emerging concept of agrobiodiversity and its relationship with food security, nutrition, health, environmental sustainability, and climate change. It assesses the impacts on agrobiodiversity of key legal instruments, including seeds laws, the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants, plant breeders’ rights, the Convention on Biological Diversity (regarding specifically its impact on agrobiodiversity), and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It also reviews the options for the implementation of these instruments at the national level in several countries. It discusses the interfaces between the free software movement, the ‘commons’ movement, and seeds, as well as the legal instruments to protect cultural heritage and their application to safeguard agrobiodiversity-rich systems. Finally, it analyzes the role of protected areas and the possibility of using geographical indications to enhance the value of agrobiodiversity products and processes.
