Book excerpt: The glacial environments of Iceland, Greenland, Mont Blanc and Switzerland appear as one sublime landscape in this interrogation of the artist as explorer French-Swiss artist and explorer Julian Charrière (born 1987) has long explored issues related to transformations in nature and the role humans play in such processes. In the cinematic work Towards No Earthly Pole, Charrière combines various ice landscapes into a sensual, poetic universe. The work relates to the current climate crisis through his engagement with the topography of glacial landscapes and the figure of the artist as investigator and explorer. To realize the film, the artist traveled with his team to some of the most inhospitable areas on earth. In his photographs, videos and objects, Charrière upends the images and concepts we have of these regions, appealing to our capacity to marvel at the world.

Book excerpt: "Museum of Chance is the first publication of Museum Bhavan, which is a collection of museums made by Dayanita Singh in New Delhi. The museums hoiuse old and new images made by the artist. Each wooden structure can be placed and opened in different ways, and holds around a hundred framed images, some on view, while others wait for their turn in the reserve collection, also kept inside the structures. As Singh keeps adding images to the museums, the museums themselves give birth to other museums. For example, the Museum of Embraces comes out of the Museum of Chance, and the Museum of Vitrines is contained within the Museum of Furniture. This publication is a mass produced artist book for the museum by the same name. Each image in the book is a cover image on one of the books."--Colophon.

Book excerpt: Rare earth elements are the game-changing foundation of our most powerful innovationsmobile phones, iPods and iPads, liquid crystal displays, LEDs, light bulbs, CDs and DVDs. Often described as conflict materials due to the limited number of accessible mines, they are also integral to cyber-warfare weapon systems, medical technologies, hybrid vehicles, wind turbines, and green energy applications. Consequently, rare earth elements play an increasing role in global affairs and facilitate our changing self-image. Capturing some of todays emergent myths and identities, the well-designed exhibition catalog brings together 17 elementswork by 10 artists and 7 theorists including artists Camille Henrot, The Otolith Group, Ai Weiwei, sociologist and design theorist Benjamin H. Bratton, Finnish new media theorist Jussi Parikka and political theorist Jane Bennett, among others. An attempt to define the spirit of an age, Rare Earth explores how todays myths, identities, and cosmologies relate to current technology while challenging the rhetoric of immateriality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Art - Painting, grade: 1,3, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Kunstgeschichte), language: English, abstract: This thesis aims to investigate the development of the topic of climate change within an art historical context and to answer questions including how the topic of climate change originated in art and how climate change has been addressed in contemporary art. Other questions include what mediums contemporary artists have used, what other themes are linked to climate change in art, and have these works influenced change. To investigate this, I will be examining works from the artists Olafur Eliasson, Julian Charrière, Ursula Biemann, Marjetica Potrč, and Amy Balkin. Melting Glaciers, Wildfires, Hurricanes, Coastal Erosion, Agriculture Depletion, Flooding, and the extinction of various animal species are only just a few of the contemporary consequences stemming from the global phenomenon of climate change and global warming. Although one can visually experience or perceive some of these effects, others, such as the emissions of greenhouse gases, are invisible to the naked eye and can only be objectively proven through scientific evidence. By definition, climate change is any significant change in climate measures lasting for an extended period of time. This includes major changes in temperature, precipitation, or wind patterns, among other effects, that occur over several decades or longer. Extending back thousands of years, climate change has always been a part of the Earth's history. In the last 650,000 years, there have been seven cycles of glacial development and melting in which the end of the last ice age about 11,700 years ago indicated the start of the modern climate era and human civilization.

Book excerpt: The desert and desertification are concepts with unstable, unfixed definitions that haunt current politics and aesthetics. Manual for a future desert proposes a full-spectrum scanning of the desert and its multiple implications across cultural, technological, political, and ecological concerns. Emerging from an artistic research program conducted in the Chihuahuan Desert on western Texas, this book is a time-space capsule; it collects routes, tools, and understandings on the desert in order to address and act upon issues that shape present and future realities. It is a manual for tapping into the exigency of the desert; it determines the coordinates for finding a future desert without deserting the future --
