Download or read book ON/OFF written by Sarah Genner and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you constantly online? Or are you offline sometimes? Are you offline if you are not interacting with your connected devices? Or if no data about you is being collected? Do you check Instagram and Twitter during dinner? Do you turn off your smartphone at night? Do you check work emails on vacation? Do you feel you have to disconnect regularly – to relax, to concentrate, or to protect your privacy? Or do you feel more relaxed when constantly connected because your loved ones, a work emergency, or the news are always at your fingertips? Why are some people – even within networked societies – still completely offline given the tremendous opportunities of the Internet? And what does it even mean to be online or offline in the age of hyper-connectivity? In ON/OFF, Sarah Genner assesses the risks and rewards of the anytime-anywhere Internet, focusing on digital divides, social relationships, physical and mental health, and data privacy. She discusses implications for a variety of decision-makers in the world of work, in education, in families, and in politics. The author deconstructs the online/offline dichotomy and suggests the ON/OFF scale as a new theoretical framework for researchers and practitioners.
Book Synopsis The Value of Public Service Media by : Gregory Ferrell Lowe
Download or read book The Value of Public Service Media written by Gregory Ferrell Lowe and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worth of public service media is under increasing scrutiny in the 21st century as governments consider whether the institution is a good investment and a fair player in media markets. Mandated to provide universally accessible services and to cater for groups that are not commercially attractive, the institution often confronts conflicting demands. It must evidence its economic value, a concept defined by commercial logic, while delivering social value in fulfilling its largely not-for-profit public service mission and functions. Dual expectations create significant complexity for measuring PSM's overall ?public value?, a controversial policy concept that provided the theme for the RIPE@2012 conference, which took place in Sydney, Australia. This book, the sixth in the series of RIPE Readers on PSM published by NORDICOM, is the culmination of robust discourse during that event and the distillation of its scholarly outcomes. Chapters are based on top tier contributions that have been revised, expanded and subject to peer review (double-blind). The collection investigates diverse conceptions of public service value in media, keyed to distinctions in the values and ideals that legitimate the public service enterprise in media in many countries.

Book Synopsis Thick Comparison by : Dr. Thomas Scheffer
Download or read book Thick Comparison written by Dr. Thomas Scheffer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We have come a long way from Evans-Pritchard's famous dictum that "there is only one method in social anthropology, the comparative method - and that is impossible." Yet a good 40 years later, qualitative social inquiry still has an uneasy relationship with comparison. This volume sets out "thick comparison" as a means to revive "comparing" as a productive process in ethnographic work: a process that helps to revitalise the articulation work inherent in analytical ethnographies; to vary observer perspectives and point towards "blind spots;" to name and create "new things" and modes of empirical work and to give way to intensified dialogues between data analysis and theorizing. Contributors are Katrin Amelang, Stefan Beck, Kati Hannken-Illjes, Alexander Kozin, Henriette Langstrup, Jèorg Niewèohner, Thomas Scheffer, Robert Schmidt, Estrid S²rensen, and Britt Ross Winthereik."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Whose ABC? is Ken Inglis's long-awaited political and cultural history of one of Australia's best-loved institutions. Combining in-depth research, interviews with the key players and a gift for story-telling, it is social history of the highest order.Since 1983, the ABC has seen controversial managing directors - David Hill, Jonathan Shier - come and go. There have been fights over funding - "eight cents a day" - and charges of bias. There have been both programming triumphs - from Bananas in Pyjamas to Kath & Kim - and accusations of cowardice and dumbing down.Whose ABC? deals with all these events and more. It seeks out the truth of events and breaks new ground. The result is an unfailingly readable narrative that will be seen as a classic of Australian historical writing.
