Book excerpt: Divided into seven books, it opens with a summary of Jewish history from the capture of Jerusalem by the Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BC to the first stages of the First Jewish–Roman War. The next five books detail the unfolding of the war, under Roman generals Vespasian and Titus, to the death of the last Sicarii. The book was written about 75 AD, originally in Josephus's "paternal tongue", probably Aramaic, though this version has not survived. It was later translated into Greek, probably under the supervision of Josephus himself. The sources of knowledge of the First Jewish–Roman War are: this account of Josephus, the Talmud (Gittin 57b), Midrash Eichah, and the Hebrew inscriptions on the Jewish coins minted, and Book V of Tacitus' Histories. The text also survives in an Old Slavonic version, as well as Hebrew which contains material not found in the Greek version, and which is lacking other material found in the Greek version.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaea Capta "Again will I build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel!" saith the Lord. Evermore bearing in mind this promise, regarding it as a beacon of hope, yea, of positive certainty, brightening the dark path that we are about to traverse, we may the better bear to fix a stedfast gaze on the desolations of many generations, - to recall, in what has been, the painful prelude to what now is; and to relate how, with the stroke of a cruel one the holy city was smitten, her spiritual privileges extinguished, and her temporal glories buried in the dust. "Beautiful for situation," that which constituted its principal beauty was also its main strength. Judea is peculiarly a "hill country;" and in the neighbourhood of the holy city these mountainous elevations are rendered so conducive to its defence as to have furnished King David with an illustration of the divine guardianship: "As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people." Captured by the Romans, he saved his skin by finding favor with the emperor Vespasian. He then served as an adviser to the Roman legions, running a network of spies inside Jerusalem, in the belief that the Jews’ only hope of survival lay in surrender to Rome.As a Jewish eyewitness who was given access to Vespasian’s campaign notebooks, Josephus is our only source of information for the war of extermination that ended in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, and the amazing times in which he lived. He is of vital importance for anyone interested in the Middle East, Jewish history, and the early history of Christianity.
