Book excerpt: This book brings together a series of new and historical case studies to show how different phases of globalization are transforming the built environment. Taking a broad interdisciplinary approach, the author draws on sociological, geographical, cultural and postcolonial studies to provide a critical account of the development of three key concepts: global culture, post colonialism, and modernity. Subsequent case studies examine how global economic, political and cultural forces shape the forms of architectural and urban modernity in globalized suburbs and spaces in major cities worldwide. The first book to combine global and postcolonial theoretical approaches to the built environment and to illustrate these with examples, Spaces of Global Cultures argues for a more historical and interdisciplinary understanding of globalization: one that places material space and the built environment at the centre and calls for new theories to address new conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering an exhaustive range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City was a success by every measure, earning worldwide acclaim and several awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But much has changed since the volume first appeared in 1995: the World Trade Center no longer dominates the skyline, a billionaire businessman has become an unlikely three-term mayor, and urban regeneration—Chelsea Piers, the High Line, DUMBO, Williamsburg, the South Bronx, the Lower East Side—has become commonplace. To reflect such innovation and change, this definitive, one-volume resource on the city has been completely revised and expanded. The revised edition includes 800 new entries that help complete the story of New York: from Air Train to E-ZPass, from September 11 to public order. The new material includes broader coverage of subject areas previously underserved as well as new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries—spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more—have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades. The more than 5,000 alphabetical entries and 700 illustrations of the second edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City convey the richness and diversity of its subject in great breadth and detail, and will continue to serve as an indispensable tool for everyone who has even a passing interest in the American metropolis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on the history of bands in America from ca. 1820 to 1930, offering new insights on a major sphere of music making that brought diverse repertories to wide audiences. The essays in this volume, written by leading scholars in the field of American-band history, examine a broad spectrum of issues, including biography, performance, repertoire, and marketing. Detailed studies of key turning points in the evolution of bands include P. S. Gilmore's 1864 New Orleans concerts, the Kaiser-Cornet-Quartett's 1872 tour, the 1892 transition from Gilmore's Band to Sousa's Band, C. G. Conn's lavish artist-endorsement posters, and the demise of the Sousa Band in the late 1920s. Additional essays seek to rectify oversights and add insights to the lives of key figures in band history. African American keyed bugler Frank Johnson's earliest works receive close scrutiny, as does the life of neglected cornet superstar Alice Raymond. A complete re-evaluation of Francesco Fanciulli, the U. S. Marine Band leader whose reputation suffered greatly from an 1897 scandal, shows his importance in the realm of conducting and composition. The repertoire of a town band in antebellum New Hampshire and a documentary study of Civil War bandsmen seek to better understand social aspects of bands in the 1850s and 1860s.Edited by Bryan Proksch and George Foreman. Contributors: Patricia Backhaus, Margaret Downie Banks, Steve Bornemann, Jim Davis, Dave Detwiler, Michael O'Connor, Eric Roefs, and Colin Roust. suffered greatly from an 1897 scandal, shows his importance in the realm of conducting and composition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a compelling narrative history of the experiences and achievements of female British missionaries in China, India, and Africa during the 19th century and first half of the 20th century—the first such account available. Despite the fact that by the early 20th century female missionaries began to outnumber their male counterparts, there are few publications that document the contributions of women to the missionary movement against a backdrop of civil unrest, famine, and war. Western Daughters in Eastern Lands: British Missionary Women in Asia provides accurate and insightful information to rectify this glaring omission. In this book, author Rosemary Seton draws upon memoirs, letters, diaries, and mission records to create a unique and fascinating history of the British women whose sense of vocation took them to the East. As most British missionary women of this period were Anglicans, Baptists, Congregationalists, and Methodists, the focus is upon Protestant missionaries; Catholics are also included, however. Through these sources, a clear picture of women missionaries emerges: their social background and motivation; their lives on the mission-field and their place in mission hierarchies; their selection and training; and their educational, evangelical, and medical work. The book concludes with an assessment of their achievements and impact on foreign societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broughty Ferry on the outskirts of Dundee grew from a small fishing village to one of the wealthiest places in the world during the 19th century. As a consequence, a lot of churches were built, 11 being within an area of about 800m by 500 m. In its 12 chapters the history of each of church is described, along with the BFCG*, and the YMCA. There is also a chapter on early Christian worship in the area. Besides explaining why each church is here, the chapters also describe the people who made up the church and the buildings. Several of these are listed buildings, and a number of the stained-glass windows are thought to be of national importance. Some of our churches' style of worship have also stirred national debate, such as The Broughty Ferry Harmonium Case, or The Barnhill Case But the church is really the people rather than the building, and scattered throughout the book are anecdotes of ministers and church members. As well as individuals, congregations have played their part in the social life of the Ferry, particularly in the days before television. They also played their part helping others in times of disaster (for example, the capsize of the lifeboat Mona) or national emergencies, and in more peaceful times they have been a social conscience. Appendices list the buildings and their architects, the stained-glass windows, and the ministers of all the churches. *The Broughty Ferry Churches Group (BFCG) is an informal grouping of 9 churches representing 5 different denominations (Church of Scotland, Episcopalian, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist). The Congregational Church was also a member until it closed in 2005. The group has been working together for over 50 years
