What is modern art, as embodied in the paintings of Southeast Asia? These questions and more are answered in Reframing Modernism: Painting from Southeast Asia, Europe and Beyond, published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name. Featuring 217 works, in full colour, by 51 Southeast Asian and European artists, from the Centre Pompidou and National Gallery Singapore, as well as other Southeast Asian collections in the region and beyond, this catalogue tells the compelling story of modernism as it developed across continents, and reveals artists' powerful, and sometimes surprising, responses to modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most extraordinary works of fantasy, for adults or children, published so far this century."-Time magazine, on the Fairyland series When a young troll named Hawthorn is stolen from Fairyland by the Red Wind, he becomes a changeling--a human boy--in the strange city of Chicago, a place no less bizarre and magical than Fairyland. Left with a human family, Hawthorn struggles with his troll nature and his changeling fate, while attending school and learning about human kindnesses-and un-kindnesses. In a starred review, Kirkus noted, "Every page of this book contains at least one stunning sentence. Valente's descriptions of the human world make it sound like an exotic place, even when she just lists things to see: 'diamonds and dinosaur bones and Canadian geese and the Cathedral of Notre Dame and ballpoint pens.' Readers may wish the words were food, so they could eat them up. And they may keep reading this series for just as long as people have been arguing about Oz." In this fourth installment of her saga, The Boy Who Lost Fairyland, Catherynne M. Valente's wisdom and wit will charm readers of all ages.

Book excerpt: Love, Passion and Patriotism is an intimate account of the lives and experiences of a renowned group of young Filipino patriots, the men whose propaganda campaign was a catalyst for the country's revolt against Spain. As writers, artists, and scientists who resided in Europe, they were exposed to new ideas. Reyes uses their paintings, photographs, political writings, novels, and letters to show the moral contradictions inherent in their passionate patriotism and their struggle to come to terms with the relative sexual freedom of European women, which they found both alluring and sordid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold statement for those living within the industrial prison complex, realized in block prints of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Inside prisons across the U.S., incarcerated people struggle everyday for their basic rights, claiming again and again their status as human beings. Here, within the largest democracy in the world (conditional though it may be), incarcerated people suffer indignities from terrible living conditions to physical and sexual violence, all under the aegis of justice. As a tool to discuss the limits and ideals of human rights within a carceral state, artists at Stateville Prison, who struggle daily for their own human rights, created block prints of each article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The process of drawing, carving, and inking each print created the time and space for artists to critique and reflect on the ways the declaration is simultaneously aspirational, strategic, and fraught with the legacy of the violence of its founding states. For universal human rights to be relevant, it is essential that the most impacted people be heard and their vision of human rights centered. This book features the 30 brilliantly crafted prints presented alongside the corresponding articles from the declaration. The artists and authors ask essential questions of what it means to build a culture of human rights from below rather than institute rights from above. What happens when people denied their rights, begin to reimagine and carve them out once again? This project was inspired by Meredith Stern's Universal Declaration of Human Rights print project and developed in a class taught by Aaron Hughes through the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project.
