Book excerpt: When you hear a riveting story, does it thrill your heart and stir your soul? Do you hunger for truth and goodness? Do you secretly relate to Belle’s delight in the library in Beauty and the Beast? If so, you may be on your way to being a book girl. Books were always Sarah Clarkson’s delight. Raised in the company of the lively Anne of Green Gables, the brave Pevensie children of Narnia, and the wise Austen heroines, she discovered reading early on as a daily gift, a way of encountering the world in all its wonder. But what she came to realize as an adult was just how powerfully books had shaped her as a woman to live a story within that world, to be a lifelong learner, to grasp hope in struggle, and to create and act with courage. She’s convinced that books can do the same for you. Join Sarah in exploring the reading life as a gift and an adventure, one meant to enrich, broaden, and delight you in each season of your life as a woman. In Book Girl, you’ll discover: how reading can strengthen your spiritual life and deepen your faith, why a journey through classic literature might be just what you need (and where to begin), how stories form your sense of identity, how Sarah’s parents raised her to be a reader—and what you can do to cultivate a love of reading in the growing readers around you, and 20+ annotated book lists, including some old favorites and many new discoveries. Whether you’ve long considered yourself a reader or have dreams of becoming one, Book Girl will draw you into the life-giving journey of becoming a woman who reads and lives well.

Book excerpt: Before his rather sudden passing in 2020, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was one of the most eloquent and influential religious leaders of the generation. As Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth for over two decades, he offered a universal message cultivated from the Jewish and Western cannons he knew so well. One concept that figured prominently in his work was joy. “I think of Judaism as an ode to joy,” he once wrote. “Like Beethoven, Jews have known suffering, isolation, hardship, and rejection, yet they never lacked the religious courage to rejoice.” In this volume, organized by the Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks-Herenstein Center for Values and Leadership, academics and writers explore the significance of joy within the Jewish tradition. These essays and reflections discuss traditional Jewish primary sources, including Biblical, Rabbinic and Hebrew literature, Jewish history and philosophy, education, the arts, and positive psychology, and of course, through the prism of Lord Sacks’ work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a clarion call for African American preachers to think more deeply about the aims and ends of their preachingnamely to stop putting so much emphasis on celebratory endings to our sermons and focus more on the substantive content in our sermons. Our so-called celebratory preaching, designed to excite the congregation into action through a highly emotional closing of the sermon, has had the opposite effect. Rather than inducing action, it has lulled generations of black congregants to sleep. While we are jumping up and down, shouting, and waving our hands in the air every Sunday during the worship hour, we seem not to notice the growing number of churched and unchurched alike who are becoming powerfully alienated from any form of institutional religion." from the introduction "Celebration" is a term that has long been used to describe African American preaching, characterized by content that affirms the goodness and powerful intervention of God as well as style that builds from quiet beginnings to an emotionally rich crescendo in conclusion. Cleophus J. LaRue argues that while celebration is one of African American preaching's greatest gifts to the larger church, too many black preachers have become content with the form of celebrationvolume, vocabulary, pitch, speed, rhythm, and the liketo the neglect of its essencethe proclamation of the mighty acts of God in the lives of their congregations and communities. This kind of preaching, LaRue contends, fails to address the ongoing problems of the African American community and is powerless to prevent the growing disaffection of black America with the black church. In words both prophetic and practical, LaRue suggests ways to improve black preaching that honor both the form and the power of the African American homiletical practice of celebration. Preachers will learn how to use celebration more selectively and as part of a fully formed preaching practice rather than as a means of distracting the congregation from pressing social and theological questions. The book includes six illustrative sermons from LaRue as well as Paschal Sampson Wilkinson Sr., Brian K. Blount, and Claudette Anderson Copeland.

Book excerpt: In the heart of the vibrant city of New Orleans, where the very air seems to hum with the essence of jazz, a tale of enchantment and musical brilliance unfurls in "The Melody of Love." The city's streets are alive with the pulse of music, and within this rhythmic landscape, two extraordinary souls are destined to collide. Isais, a maestro of jazz whose spirit hungers for a melody that can reignite his creative fire, embarks on a quest through the city's labyrinthine alleys in search of inspiration. Little does he know that his journey will lead him to Harley, a mysterious street performer whose voice possesses an extraordinary power to silence even the most clamorous of crowds. As the chords of fate strike their harmonious note, Isais and Harley find themselves irresistibly drawn together by a shared love for music. Their serendipitous encounter sets off a symphony of emotions, launching them into an awe-inspiring musical journey that promises to reshape their lives forever. Against the backdrop of New Orleans' ever-shifting music scene, they forge a soul-stirring duet, a harmonious fusion that captivates audiences near and far. Yet, as their melodies ascend to celestial heights, so do the challenges that accompany fame and success. The brilliance of stardom casts shadows of envy and allure, compelling Isais and Harley to navigate the complex terrain of their newfound lives. Can their love for music endure the trials that await them, or will the demands of their burgeoning careers threaten to mute the very essence of their artistic souls? Within the pages of "The Melody of Love," the delicate equilibrium between passion and practicality takes center stage, as Isais and Harley uncover not just their identities as musicians, but also as lovers. Their narrative transcends the confines of the music industry, weaving a timeless narrative that imparts a poignant lesson on remaining authentic in the face of temptation. As their odyssey propels them from the core of New Orleans to the grandest stages across the globe, they unearth the truth that the ultimate harmony of love dwells not solely in the notes they play, but in the tender interludes they share. Dive headfirst into the rhythmic cadences and dulcet harmonies of "The Melody of Love." Allow the intoxicating ambiance of New Orleans' jazz tapestry to sweep you away, and let the intertwining voyage of Isais and Harley reverberate within your heart, a resonant reminder of the everlasting potency of music, the intricacies of celebrity, and the eternal symphony of love that echoes through the chambers of our souls.
