Book excerpt: Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence Finalist for the Oklahoma Book Award A Publishers Weekly Holiday Guide History Pick “A book so gripping it can scarcely be put down.... Superb.” —New York Times Book Review "WESTWARD HO! FOR OREGON AND CALIFORNIA!" In the eerily warm spring of 1846, George Donner placed this advertisement in a local newspaper as he and a restless caravan prepared for what they hoped would be the most rewarding journey of a lifetime. But in eagerly pursuing what would a century later become known as the "American dream," this optimistic-yet-motley crew of emigrants was met with a chilling nightmare; in the following months, their jingoistic excitement would be replaced by desperate cries for help that would fall silent in the deadly snow-covered mountains of the Sierra Nevada. We know these early pioneers as the Donner Party, a name that has elicited horror since the late 1840s. With The Best Land Under Heaven, Wallis has penned what critics agree is “destined to become the standard account” (Washington Post) of the notorious saga. Cutting through 160 years of myth-making, the “expert storyteller” (True West) compellingly recounts how the unlikely band of early pioneers met their fate. Interweaving information from hundreds of newly uncovered documents, Wallis illuminates how a combination of greed and recklessness led to one of America’s most calamitous and sensationalized catastrophes. The result is a “fascinating, horrifying, and inspiring” (Oklahoman) examination of the darkest side of Manifest Destiny.

Book Synopsis WE ARE AT WAR by : Vitalis Chi. Nwaneri
Download or read book WE ARE AT WAR written by Vitalis Chi. Nwaneri and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World is undergoing crises of faith in God and peace on earth. These crises are threatening the roots of world civilization. We are indeed at war with the only enemy of God and Man, Satan itself which instigates these crises . The ongoing wars in Syria, Egypt and most Islamic and Communist nations show that leaders like Syria’s President Assad, like Hitler, are clearly influenced by Satan. To address these crises , Pope Francis called on the world to devote Saturday 7, 2013 to Prayer and Fasting for enhancement in the levels of World Peace and Faith . He also called on the Laity in the Church to carry the message of The New Evangelization to the Secular world that cannot be reached through Church teaching . Through these Books , the Author responds to the Pope’s call . His goal is to remind the world of today that its main enemy is Satan , the Devil who is the Master of Lies, Deceptions and Anti-Christ. We can stop blaming and fighting only our neighbors for our wars and crises. The world seems to be forgetting that God commands us to love our neighbors including those we view as our enemies. Satan is the main enemy to blame and fight because it is the only enemy of God and Man whose mission on earth is to tempt us to abandon our faith , love , obedience and service to God and our neighbors . We seem to be forgetting also that Christ established the Pillars of modern civilization , justice, peace, happiness and Good Governance which we enjoy today. His Church had been spreading these Pillars across world history. Through debates with Atheists and other non-believers at secular platforms and language, the Author reminds the world of these facts of its history and calls them back to the roots of its civilization . He reminds them that Satan tempts us to disobey God and follow its evil ways as many people are doing. Today we see many people driving God out of their lives and secular governance. Finally, the Author reminds the world that Christ promised Eternal Life in heaven for those who follow Him and eternal suffering in hell for those who follow the enemy. Christ had promised these will happen at His End Time Judgment. It is therefore appropriate that the world be reminded in “This Year of Faith” that God’s commandments extend to both our religious and secular lives and Governance. So, as we promise at Baptism , let’s reject Satan and all its Lies, Deceptions and False Promises and stop its temptation to drive God out of our lives and governance .

Book Synopsis Early Chinese Mysticism by : Livia Kohn
Download or read book Early Chinese Mysticism written by Livia Kohn and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Chinese mysticism vanish after its first appearance in ancient Taoist philosophy, to surface only after a thousand years had passed, when the Chinese had adapted Buddhism to their own culture? This first integrated survey of the mystical dimension of Taoism disputes the commonly accepted idea of such a hiatus. Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages. Influenced by but ultimately independent of Buddhism, it took forms more various than the quietistic withdrawal of Laozi or the sudden enlightenment of the Chan Buddhists. On the basis of a new theoretical evaluation of mysticism, this study analyzes the relationship between philosophical and religious Taoism and between Buddhism and the native Chinese tradition. Kohn shows how the quietistic and socially oriented Daode jing was combined with the ecstatic and individualistic mysticism of the Zhuangzi, with immortality beliefs and practices, and with Buddhist insight meditation, mind analysis, and doctrines of karma and retribution. She goes on to demonstrate that Chinese mysticism, a complex synthesis by the late Six Dynasties, reached its zenith in the Tang, laying the foundations for later developments in the Song traditions of Inner Alchemy, Chan Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism.

Book Synopsis A Journey Through Math-Land by : Reza Noubary
Download or read book A Journey Through Math-Land written by Reza Noubary and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you look at math by eyes you see symbols, by brain knowledge, by heart truth, and by soul God. This book is about flying over math-land, enjoying the view, and landing safely. It seems inconceivable how much we rely on mathematics/numbers in our daily lives and how natural it feels. Our birth is announced by a set of numbers representing the time, date, and our height and weight. We become a functioning member of society only after a Social Security number is assigned to us. Our health and fitness are evaluated using numbers representing our blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature, and so on. From that point onward, every action performed and every life encountered becomes part of our ongoing use of mathematics/numbers. This book traces applications of mathematics. The goal is to find a way to delight readers about the discipline and open the door for them to see its beauty by presenting a variety of applications. It is particularly useful for the individuals with some mathematics background or interests.

Book Synopsis Monastic Perspectives on Temporality by : Riitta Hujanen
Download or read book Monastic Perspectives on Temporality written by Riitta Hujanen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Riitta Hujanen explores temporality in the context of Catholic enclosed contemplative traditions. It investigates, based on literature and other sources, what enclosed contemplatives might say about temporality through their monastic journeys. What makes a young person decide to dedicate their life inside a cloister? Do contemplatives have a preference for eternity over temporal time? How does the enclosed contemplative life impact one’s concept of time? How is time perceived towards the end of one’s monastic journey? What is seen when looking back to the years in the enclosed contemplative life? What is experienced at the hour of death? The answers to these questions illustrate a paradoxical dynamic in monastic journeys that cover a broad historical scope from the earliest monastic writers to contemporary sources.

Book Synopsis A Journey to the Promised Land by : J. Mastine Nisbett
Download or read book A Journey to the Promised Land written by J. Mastine Nisbett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dean Nisbett has crafted an excellent book that is carefully researched. He is a masterful storyteller, combining theology, sociology, history, scripture and church architecture into a masterpiece. Writing about the struggle of a suburban parish to build an edifice, the author cites numerous parallels between the Israelites history and that of the parish. He recasts the Israelites story into the contemporary, making the Bible relevant in demonstrating the ongoing work of God. Nisbett explores the struggle of African Americans to be integrated into the United States of America. He addresses the tension between West Indians and black Americans and notes the latters significant contribution to the Episcopal Church. He recognizes the indelible contribution of the first African Americans who penetrated the white enclave of Cambria Heights. Recognition is also made of black Episcopalians for their valuable contribution to the society and for challenging the church to be honest to its Catholicity, insisting that they (black Episcopalians) be included into the Body of Christ. The author explicates the concept of vocation, the call to serve God in His church. He shares his personal experience. Very inspiring! A must read for those contemplating the ordained ministry. The book integrates the Church into the life of the community. It is an excellent tool for congregational development, and could serve as a model for congregations to chronicle their history from a theological perspective. In addition, the book will be useful to those researching the history of the ordination of black Episcopalians and the birth of the black Episcopal congregation in the United States. It is a wonderful resource for those considering church construction. Finally, the author theologizes the building and provides a helpful manual for every worshiper whom the author (in reference to 1st Peter) describes as living stones built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ, The chief Corner Stone.
