Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journeys of Observation This book records the observations made by a traveler who happened to be a mining engineer; it is supposed to belong to the type of voyages metallurgi-ques, such as were published in days before the globe had been over-run by tourists and its distant corners rendered commonplace by the exaggerations of the daily press. To the members of my profession the comment concerning the industrial conditions, geological structure, mining methods, and metallurgical practice of southwestern Colorado and a progressive part of Mexico, will have the interest that comes from observations which reflect a point of view somewhat similar to their own, while to the layman the not too severely technical descriptions, aided by beautiful photographs, will afford information of a kind rarely obtainable except in periodicals devoted to technology. It is hoped that this record of conditions in two representative mining regions may have a historical value in the days to come. Moreover, I have thought it well to publish this volume as an expression of thanks to those who were kind enough to give me many valuable data and to make my travels pleasant by their courtesy and hospitality. I am indebted to many friends for the photographs, for only a few of them are my own. From the United States Geological Survey were obtained half a dozen of the best views of the San Juan; other acknowledgments appear in the text. Book Synopsis A Journey Around the World (Classic Reprint) by : Edwin S. George
Download or read book A Journey Around the World (Classic Reprint) written by Edwin S. George and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations and Reflections Made in the Course of a Journey Through France, Italy, and Germany, Vol. 2 of 2 The weather was quiet then, and we had no notion of passing such a horrible night; but an hour after dark, a storm came on, which was really dreadful to endure; or even look upon: the blue lightning, whose colour shewed the nature of the original minerals from which she drew her existence, shone round us in a broad expanse from time to time, and sudden darkness followed n an instant: no object then but the fiery river could be seen, till another flash discovered the waves tossing and breaking, at a height I never saw before. Nothing sure was ever more sublime or awful than our entrance into Naples at the dead hour we arrived, when not a whisper was to be heard in the streets, and not a glimpse of light was left to guide us, except the small lap hung now and then at a high window before a favourite image of the Virgin. Book Synopsis Journeys Out of the Body by : Robert A. Monroe
Download or read book Journeys Out of the Body written by Robert A. Monroe and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive work on the extraordinary phenomenon of out-of-body experiences, by the founder of the internationally known Monroe Institute. Robert Monroe, a Virginia businessman, began to have experiences that drastically altered his life. Unpredictably, and without his willing it, Monroe found himself leaving his physical body to travel via a "second body" to locales far removed from the physical and spiritual realities of his life. He was inhabiting a place unbound by time or death. Praise for Journeys Out of the Body "Monroe's account of his travels, Journeys Out of the Body, jam-packed with parasitic goblins and dead humans, astral sex, scary trips into mind-boggling other dimensions, and practical tips on how to get out of your body, all told with wry humor, quickly became a cult sensation with its publication in 1971, and has been through many printings. Whatever their 'real' explanation, Monroe's trips made for splendid reading." —Michael Hutchinson, author of Megabrain "Robert Monroe's experiences are probably the most intriguing of any person's of our time, with the possible exception of Carlos Castaneda's." —Joseph Chilton Pierce, author of Magical Child "This book is by a person who's clearly a sensible man and who's trying to tell it like it is. No ego trips. Just a solid citizen who's been 'out' a thousand times now and wants to pass his experiences to others." —The Last Whole Earth Catalog
