Visually luscious and daring in conception, Bruno opens new vistas and understandings at every turn.
Book Synopsis Painted Journeys by : Peter H. Hassrick
Download or read book Painted Journeys written by Peter H. Hassrick and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-07 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artist-explorer John Mix Stanley (1814–1872), one of the most celebrated chroniclers of the American West in his time, was in a sense a victim of his own success. So highly regarded was his work that more than two hundred of his paintings were held at the Smithsonian Institution—where in 1865 a fire destroyed all but seven of them. This volume, featuring a comprehensive collection of Stanley’s extant art, reproduced in full color, offers an opportunity—and ample reason—to rediscover the remarkable accomplishments of this outsize figure of nineteenth-century American culture. Originally from New York State, Stanley journeyed west in 1842 to paint Indian life. During the U.S.-Mexican War, he joined a frontier military expedition and traveled from Santa Fe to California, producing sketches and paintings of the campaign along the way—work that helped secure his fame in the following decades. He was also appointed chief artist for Isaac Stevens’s survey of the 48th parallel for a proposed transcontinental railroad. The essays in this volume, by noted scholars of American art, document and reflect on Stanley’s life and work from every angle. The authors consider the artist’s experience on government expeditions; his solo tours among the Oregon settlers and western and Plains Indians; and his career in Washington and search for government patronage, as well as his individual works. With contributions by Emily C. Burns, Scott Manning Stevens, Lisa Strong, Melissa Speidel, Jacquelyn Sparks, and Emily C. Wilson, the essays in this volume convey the full scope of John Mix Stanley’s artistic accomplishment and document the unfolding of that uniquely American vision throughout the artist’s colorful life. Together they restore Stanley to his rightful place in the panorama of nineteenth-century American life and art.

Download or read book Migrations written by Lizzie Carey-Thomas and published by Tate Publishing(UK). This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past 500 years Britain, and British art, have been shaped by successive waves of migration. Elements thought of as most typically British - landscape painting, for instance - were introduced by foreign artists, attracted by the promise of lucrative commissions. European academic painters and British artists who travelled to study in Italy helped introduce a neoclassical vocabulary to British painting. In the second half of the nineteenth century American artists like James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent trained and exhibited in Paris before settling in London, while French artists such as Henri Fantin-Latour and Alphonse Legros made regular visits to England. The east London Jewish diaspora produced a number of significant artists in the early twentieth century, including David Bomberg, Jacob Epstein and Mark Gertler. Refugees from the rise of Fascism in Europe in the 1930s included Naum Gabo, Oskar Kokoschka, Piet Mondrian and Kurt Schwitters. Artists who made their way to Britain from countries in the former British Empire included Frank Bowling, Rasheed Araeen and Aubrey Williams. In the 1970s the rise of conceptual art saw a generation of artists like David Medalla, David Lamelas and Gustav Metzger who were international in their attitude to their work and their own identity.
Book Synopsis The Artist's Journey by : Steven Pressfield
Download or read book The Artist's Journey written by Steven Pressfield and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have a theory about the Hero's Journey. We all have one. We have many, in fact. But our primary hero's journey is the passage we live out, in real life, before we find our calling. The hero's journey ends when, like Odysseus, we return home to Ithaca, to the place from which we started. What then? The passage that comes next is The Artist's Journey. On our artist's journey, we move past Resistance and past self-sabotage. We discover our true selves and our authentic calling, and we produce the works we were born to create. You are an artist too-whether you realize it or not, whether you like it or not-and you have an artist's journey. Will you live it out? Will you follow your Muse and do the work you were born to do? Ready or not, you are called."--Back cover.

This book explores Durer's extensive influence on his contemporaries and his sources of inspiration, bringing together paintings, drawings, sculptures, glass, and prints by artists he may have encountered along the way. It also examines the complex development of Durer's own status as an artist entrepreneur and innovator in artistic theory.0 Durer's journal records his pursuit of commissions and details his visits to Italy, Antwerp, Cologne, Brussels, Ghent, and Bruges.
