Book excerpt: The award-winning New York Times bestseller about the extraordinary things that can happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor. But back then his life was at a dead end until at twelve he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. She gave him his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart. Doty would go on to put Ruth’s practices to work with extraordinary results—power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old, riding his orange Sting-Ray bike. But he neglects Ruth’s most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous results—until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him. Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.

Download or read book The Alphabet Circle Journey written by Maxine Wright-Walters Ph.D. and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you dreamed about living your best life? The Alphabet Circle Journey: Living Your Best Life brings together for the first time a parallel between the laws of chemistry and human relationships. The author provides the reader with a plausible theory and understanding of how and why relationships form and end. Using each letter of the alphabet, with nature as its backdrop, the author skillfully uses metaphors to intertwine human behavior with the philosophy of the universe to traverse the life journey along the Alphabet Circle. The Alphabet Circle is our life journey. The author theorizes that every life encounter happens somewhere on your Alphabet Circle and comes together based on soul chemistry. Upon meeting, the souls form soul-to-soul bonds, the connections for relationships to deliver an experience. Soul bond energy with coded information for your journey is released from these interactions. You must then connect at the soul level to understand these messages, which are the key for an exciting, enjoyable, and fulfilling journey for your best life. The Alphabet Circle concept offers that human beings have a dual existence. We have a physical body and a soul with complimentary interactions at the human and soul level. The physical level interaction happens in the head, which is where our ego operates. It is logical. On the other hand, the soul level connection is what we need to understand as we move to a level of consciousness where we let go of ego to bond at the soul level. Then and only then can we live our best lives. The book offers a one-directional Alphabet Circle. The author uses an active style to bring the book to life and offer through each letter of the alphabet tools for the journey.

Book excerpt: Letters are tangible language. Joining together in endless combinations to actually show speech, letters convey our messages and tell our stories. While we encounter these tiny shapes hundreds of times a day, we take for granted the long, fascinating history behind one of the most fundamental of human inventions -- the alphabet. The heart of the book is the 26 fact-filled “biographies” of letters A through Z, each one identifying the letter’s particular significance for modern readers, tracing its development from ancient forms, and discussing its noteworthy role in literature and other media. We learn, for example, why the letter X has a sinister and sexual aura, how B came to signify second best, why the word “mother” in many languages starts with M, and what is the story of O. Packed with information and lavishly illustrated, Letter Perfect is not only accessible and entertaining, but essential to the appreciation of our own language.

This book was released on 2007-10-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul E. Isert, a Dane, arrived in Ghana (then the Gold Coast) in 1783, taking advantage of an opening in the slave trade between Guinea and the West Indies. He was appointed as chief surgeon to the Danish establishments on the Guinea Coast. In 1786 he sailed to the West Indies with a cargo of slaves, who revolted. His experiences in Ghana and the West Indies resolved him to end the trans-Atlantic slave abuse. This book is written in the form of letters to his father. An elusive character, it is clear that he nonetheless had an unreservedly positive attitude towards Africa and its indigenous peoples, and an equally negative attitude towards the Europeans on the Guinea coast. An admirer of Rousseau?s philosophy, he was concerned about the corrupting influence of the European ?civilisation? on the ?Blacks?. His writing attempts at objectivity, seeking to find the common humanity. He claims that the ?Black? was, at least equal to that of the ?European?,which was not shared by his Danish predecessors. This is the first English language edition of his original Danish letters, previously published in German, Dutch, French, and Swedish.
Book Synopsis Tale Of Discrete Mathematics, A: A Journey Through Logic, Reasoning, Structures And Graph Theory by : Joseph Khoury
Download or read book Tale Of Discrete Mathematics, A: A Journey Through Logic, Reasoning, Structures And Graph Theory written by Joseph Khoury and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics covered in Discrete Mathematics have become essential tools in many areas of studies in recent years. This is primarily due to the revolution in technology, communications, and cyber security. The book treats major themes in a typical introductory modern Discrete Mathematics course: Propositional and predicate logic, proof techniques, set theory (including Boolean algebra, functions and relations), introduction to number theory, combinatorics and graph theory. An accessible, precise, and comprehensive approach is adopted in the treatment of each topic. The ability of abstract thinking and the art of writing valid arguments are emphasized through detailed proof of (almost) every result. Developing the ability to think abstractly and roguishly is key in any areas of science, information technology and engineering. Every result presented in the book is followed by examples and applications to consolidate its comprehension. The hope is that the reader ends up developing both the abstract reasoning as well as acquiring practical skills. All efforts are made to write the book at a level accessible to first-year students and to present each topic in a way that facilitates self-directed learning. Each chapter starts with basic concepts of the subject at hand and progresses gradually to cover more ground on the subject. Chapters are divided into sections and subsections to facilitate readings. Each section ends with its own carefully chosen set of practice exercises to reenforce comprehension and to challenge and stimulate readers. As an introduction to Discrete Mathematics, the book is written with the smallest set of prerequisites possible. Familiarity with basic mathematical concepts (usually acquired in high school) is sufficient for most chapters. However, some mathematical maturity comes in handy to grasp some harder concepts presented in the book.

Book Synopsis 'Alphabet' Twenty-Two Steps to Enlightenment by : Christine Brydon
Download or read book 'Alphabet' Twenty-Two Steps to Enlightenment written by Christine Brydon and published by tredition. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacred Phoenician Alphabet is the foundation stone upon which many Legends and Stories have been based, including the 'Story of Creation' in Genesis, the 'Mystical Kabbalah', and the 'True Art of Astrology'. And while it is highly probable that most people have some knowledge of these Ancient Traditions, the majority of Humanity have no understanding of how they originated, or of the message they convey to us, concerning our 'Perception of Reality'. This is because since their original conception, the context of these stories has been altered to reflect the philosophies and lifestyle of successive generations, until the Spiritual Wisdom which they exemplify is now often misunderstood, and even feared by many. The original Symbols of the Sacred Phoenician Alphabet are alleged to have been devised by a tribe of Canaanites around 2000 B.C., who later became known as the Phoenicians. And the Symbols are a simplistic representation of the Phoenician perspective of our 'Journey through Life', and tell the story of the Beneficent, Androgynous, Mother God-dess of Pure Magical Light, and the 'Miraculous Process of Self-Creation' which takes place within us when we pronounce the resonant sounds of the Spoken Word. The Sacred Phoenician Symbols were later adapted into Letters to record the Hebrew 'Story of Creation', 'Kabbalah' and 'Astrology' in written form; possibly first in the 'Sefer Yetzirah', (Book of Creation), and later in the Bible, to show us the 'Way to our Salvation'. However, the Phoenicians maintained that we do not need 'saving', only to change our present Life Story. The Tarot is also mentioned in the Manual, since although not directly related to the Sacred Phoenician Alphabet, it too tells the Story of our Journey through Life to our Divine Destination.
Book Synopsis Journey to Ithaca: A personal memoir by : William Rowland
Download or read book Journey to Ithaca: A personal memoir written by William Rowland and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2024-07-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to Ithaca is an extraordinary memoir about an extraordinary life. Of its author it may well be said, in Shakespeare’s words (from Henry VI, part I, aptly quoted in the prelims): “Who would e’er suppose [he] had such courage and audacity?” From the outset, William Rowland invites his readers to accompany him along his personal journey to Ithaca. It was at Ithaca Mansions in Sea Point, Cape Town, that, at the age of five, a happy little boy lost his vision in consequence of a gunshot through his temple, severing his optic nerves. That was, definitively, the day the light went out. With enormous courage and determination William approached life head-on, achieving what many others might have found too daunting to attempt. Writing with restraint and dignity in Journey to Ithaca, William tells his life story in a series of short chapters marking significant stages and events of his life, recounting the challenges and the achievements in equal measure, and often with gentle humour. What shines through most strongly from this memoir is that at no time has William allowed his blindness to define or limit him and certainly never to deny him the fullness of experience and adventure encountered by the sighted. Intellectual, leader, innovator, activist, author, mentor, as well as loving father—William Rowland fills each of these roles with consummate ability and enthusiasm. His life story thus far, as told in Journey to Ithaca, will inspire all who read it, whether blind or sighted.
