Book Synopsis Saving Lives, Buying Time by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Saving Lives, Buying Time written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, low-cost antimalarial drugs silently saved millions of lives and cured billions of debilitating infections. Today, however, these drugs no longer work against the deadliest form of malaria that exists throughout the world. Malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africaâ€"currently just over one million per yearâ€"are rising because of increased resistance to the old, inexpensive drugs. Although effective new drugs called "artemisinins" are available, they are unaffordable for the majority of the affected population, even at a cost of one dollar per course. Saving Lives, Buying Time: Economics of Malaria Drugs in an Age of Resistance examines the history of malaria treatments, provides an overview of the current drug crisis, and offers recommendations on maximizing access to and effectiveness of antimalarial drugs. The book finds that most people in endemic countries will not have access to currently effective combination treatments, which should include an artemisinin, without financing from the global community. Without funding for effective treatment, malaria mortality could double over the next 10 to 20 years and transmission will intensify.

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 1027 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.

Book Synopsis Malaria Control During Mass Population Movements and Natural Disasters by : Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University
Download or read book Malaria Control During Mass Population Movements and Natural Disasters written by Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-01-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admittedly, the world and the nature of forced migration have changed a great deal over the last two decades. The relevance of data accumulated during that time period can now be called into question. The roundtable and the Program on Forced Migration at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University have commissioned a series of epidemiological reviews on priority public health problems for forced migrants that will update the state of knowledge. Malaria Control During Mass Population Movements and Natural Disasters- the first in the series, provides a basic overview of the state of knowledge of epidemiology of malaria and public health interventions and practices for controlling the disease in situations involving forced migration and conflict.
Book Synopsis Indian Anophelines by : B. N. Nagpal
Download or read book Indian Anophelines written by B. N. Nagpal and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Anophelines is the first book of its kind on the fauna of anopheline mosquitoes from India. The following aspects of mosquito systematics, biology and distribution are described: Worldwide distribution of anophelines in 12 malaria epidemiological zones, Reported distribution of anophelines in India; Bio-ecology and behaviour of mosquitoes; Updated vector status; Pictorial keys; Bibliography; and Glossary. Indian Anophelines assume special importance because of the deteriorating malaria situation in India, complicated by vector resistance to insecticides, ecological succession of mosquitoes, invasion of mosquitoes to new areas, as also their disappearance from certain areas. As a result mosquito fauna has undergone major changes and this precise knowledge at the local level in endemic regions is invariably lacking. Often the identification is made difficult due to variations in many appendages. For each anopheline species the book provides names, derivatives, type form availability, resting habits, breeding ecology, biting time, flight range, susceptibility to insecticides, relation to disease, reported distribution in India and the world, and results of vector incrimination studies. Using this book it is easy to identify specimens correctly up to species level. Taxonomic description of each species is supported by high quality illustrations giving distinguishing features of each species and their variations. The style of presentation is lucid and simple. This book is intended as a reference material for students of mosquito systematics. The book therefore would be a valuable addition in the libraries and a source of knowledge for the students engaged in research and those interested in the study of the bioecology and control of mosquitoes.
Download or read book Malaria written by G. A. T. Targett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1991 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaria Waiting for the Vaccine Edited by G.A.T. Targett, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Malaria affects enormous populations in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. In global terms, the situation is worsening as the impact of parasite and mosquito vector adaptations to drugs and insecticides exacerbates weaknesses in control programmes already under great strain for socio-economic reasons. This book, the first in a series of annual public health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, brings together expertise in all of the disciplines that impinge on current control efforts and that are essential for the development of new and improved measures. The ten sections provide a balance between the different approaches to public health management of malaria, those concerned with the individual who is infected, and control at community level. Clinical control emphasizes management of severe disease and the impact of drug resistance. Community public health measures consider all aspects of vector control, use and supply of drugs in endemic regions, and the organization and economics of control. For the future, the current status of vaccine development and the conduct of field trials are assessed. Detailed discussions amongst experts in each field lead to a series of recommendations designed to assist those currently engaged in control and management of the disease, to indicate priorities for future research, and above all to provide an agenda for national and international discussion on future strategies for combating the disease. The book will also appeal to epidemiologists, research scientists and clinicians as it sets their research and responsibilities in a much wider context than normal. In a similar way it will be invaluable for postgraduate teaching.
Book Synopsis Towards Malaria Elimination by : Sylvie Manguin
Download or read book Towards Malaria Elimination written by Sylvie Manguin and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Towards Malaria Elimination - A Leap Forward was started to mark the occasion for renewed commitment to end malaria transmission for good (the WHO's call for "Malaria Free World" by 2030). This book is dedicated for the benefit of researchers, scientists, program and policy managers, students and anyone interested in malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases with the goal of sharing recent information on success stories, innovative control approaches and challenges in different regions of the world. Some main issues that emerged included multidrug-resistant malaria and pandemic risk, vaccines, cross-border malaria, asymptomatic parasite reservoir, the threat of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium knowlesi, insecticide resistance in Anopheles vectors and outdoor malaria transmission. This book is one little step forward to bring together in 17 chapters the experiences of malaria-expert researchers from five continents to present updated information on disease epidemiology and control at the national/regional level, highlighting the constraints, challenges, accomplishments and prospects of malaria elimination.
