Book excerpt: A lucid statement of the philosophy of modular programming can be found in a 1970 textbook on the design of system programs by Gouthier and Pont [1, l Cfl0. 23], which we quote below: A well-defined segmentation of the project effort ensures system modularity. Each task fonos a separate, distinct program module. At implementation time each module and its inputs and outputs are well-defined, there is no confusion in the intended interface with other system modules. At checkout time the in tegrity of the module is tested independently; there are few sche duling problems in synchronizing the completion of several tasks before checkout can begin. Finally, the system is maintained in modular fashion; system errors and deficiencies can be traced to specific system modules, thus limiting the scope of detailed error searching. Usually nothing is said about the criteria to be used in dividing the system into modules. This paper will discuss that issue and, by means of examples, suggest some criteria which can be used in decomposing a system into modules. A Brief Status Report The major advancement in the area of modular programming has been the development of coding techniques and assemblers which (1) allow one modu1e to be written with little knowledge of the code in another module, and (2) alJow modules to be reas sembled and replaced without reassembly of the whole system.

Book excerpt: "Steve Rago offers valuable insights into the kernel-level features of SVR4 not covered elsewhere; I think readers will especially appreciate the coverage of STREAMS, TLI, and SLIP." - W. Richard Stevens, author of UNIX Network Programming, Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 1, and TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 2 Finally, with UNIX(R) System V Network Programming, an authoritative reference is available for programmers and system architects interested in building networked and distributed applications for UNIX System V. Even if you currently use a different version of the UNIX system, such as the latest release of 4.3BSD or SunOS, this book is valuable to you because it is centered around UNIX System V Release 4, the version of the UNIX system that unified many of the divergent UNIX implementations. For those professionals new to networking and UNIX system programming, two introductory chapters are provided. The author then presents the programming interfaces most important to building communication software in System V, including STREAMS, the Transport Layer Interface library, Sockets, and Remote Procedure Calls. So that your designs are not limited to user-level, the author also explains how to write kernel-level communication software, including STREAMS drivers, modules, and multiplexors. Many examples are provided, including an Ethernet driver and a transport-level multiplexing driver. In the final chapter, the author brings the material from previous chapters together, presenting the design of a SLIP communication package. 0201563185B04062001

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithms for Computer Algebra is the first comprehensive textbook to be published on the topic of computational symbolic mathematics. The book first develops the foundational material from modern algebra that is required for subsequent topics. It then presents a thorough development of modern computational algorithms for such problems as multivariate polynomial arithmetic and greatest common divisor calculations, factorization of multivariate polynomials, symbolic solution of linear and polynomial systems of equations, and analytic integration of elementary functions. Numerous examples are integrated into the text as an aid to understanding the mathematical development. The algorithms developed for each topic are presented in a Pascal-like computer language. An extensive set of exercises is presented at the end of each chapter. Algorithms for Computer Algebra is suitable for use as a textbook for a course on algebraic algorithms at the third-year, fourth-year, or graduate level. Although the mathematical development uses concepts from modern algebra, the book is self-contained in the sense that a one-term undergraduate course introducing students to rings and fields is the only prerequisite assumed. The book also serves well as a supplementary textbook for a traditional modern algebra course, by presenting concrete applications to motivate the understanding of the theory of rings and fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy based systems are the subject of a wide range of activities in univer- ties, standardisation bodies, and within industry. They have a wide spectrum of applications ranging from quality of service management within networks to - curity and enterprise modelling. This Lecture Notes volume collects the papers presented at the workshop on Policies for Distributed Systems and Networks held at the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Bristol, UK in January 2001. After a rigorous review process 16 papers were selected from 43 submissions. Within the Internet community there is considerable interest in policy based networking. A number of companies have announced tools to support the sp- i?cation and deployment of policies. Much of this work is focused on policies for quality of service management within networks and the Internet Engineering and Distributed Management Task Force (IETF/DMTF) is actively working on standards related to this area. The security community has focused on the speci?cation and analysis of - cess control policy which has evolved into the work on Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). There has been work over a number of years in the academic c- munity on speci?cation and analysis of policies for distributed systems mostly concentrating on authorisation policies. Although there are strong similarities in the concepts and techniques used by the di?erent communities there is no commonly accepted terminology or notation for specifying policies.

Network managers need to understand the context and origins of the systems they are using. Programmers need an understanding of the reasons behind the interfaces they must satisfy and the relationship of the software they build to the whole network. And finally, sales representatives need to see the context into which their products must fit.

Book excerpt: Provides a modern mathematical approach to the design of communication networks for graduate students, blending control, optimization, and stochastic network theories. A broad range of performance analysis tools are discussed, including important advanced topics that have been made accessible to students for the first time. Taking a top-down approach to network protocol design, the authors begin with the deterministic model and progress to more sophisticated models. Network algorithms and protocols are tied closely to the theory, illustrating the practical engineering applications of each topic. The background behind the mathematical analyses is given before the formal proofs and is supported by worked examples, enabling students to understand the big picture before going into the detailed theory. End-of-chapter problems cover a range of difficulties, with complex problems broken into several parts, and hints to many problems are provided to guide students. Full solutions are available online for instructors.
