Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Inculturation' is a word come only recently into theological language, having its origin and impetus in a revolution in the perception of Christian mission--even of Christian identity. 'Toward a Theology of Inculturation' is the first book to bring together the many strands of current and historical Catholic thought on what might be called a theology of a multicultural church. Inculturation, Shorter argues, is the recognition that faith must in effect become culture to be fully received and lived. In the course of a wide-ranging discussion, the author explores the intimate relationship between inculturation and theology, focusing in particular on scripture, the history of Òmissions (especially in Africa), and contemporary Catholic thought. Shorter concludes with an exploration of the future of the church--a multicultural church. 'Toward a Theology of Inculturation' offers a substantive explication of what inculturation is, what it is not, how and when it occurs, and what its limits are or should be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Semiotic Approach to the Theology of Inculturation argues that though it is a difficult and delicate task, inculturation is still a requisite demand of a World Church and that without it the Church is unrecognisable and unsustainable. The book also suggests that the past failures of inculturation experiments in Africa can be overcome only by critically applying the science of semiotics, which can serve as an antidote to the nature of human knowing and reductionism that characterised earlier attempts to make Christianity African to the African. Drawing from the semiotic works of C.S. Peirce, Clifford Geertz, and Bernard Lonergan, Cyril Orji shows why semiotics is best suited to an African theology of inculturation and offers ten pinpointed precepts, identified as 'Habits', which underline the attentiveness, reasonableness, and responsibility required in a semiotic approach to a theology of inculturation. The 'Habits' are also akin to the imperatives inherent in the notion of catholicity - that catholicity is not identified with uniformity but with reconciled diversity, and also that catholicity demands different forms in different places, times, and cultural settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing together international and Indian sources, and new research on the ground in South India, this book presents a unique examination of the inculturation of Christian Worship in India. Paul M. Collins examines the imperatives underlying the processes of inculturation - the dynamic relationship between the Christian message and cultures - and then explores the outcomes of those processes in terms of architecture, liturgy and ritual, and the critique offered of these outcomes, especially by Dalit theologians. This book highlights how the Indian context has informed global discussions, and how the decisions of the World Council of Churches, Vatican II and Lambeth Conferences have impacted upon the Indian context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intriguing introduction to Christian doctrine from an African perspective. Using a framework of excerpts from Chinua Achebe's well-known novel, Things Fall Apart, the author introduces the major themes of Christian doctrine: God, Trinity, creation, grace and sin, Jesus Christ, church, Mary, the saints, inculturation, and spirituality. While explaining basic Christian beliefs, Theology Brewed in an African Pot also clarifies the differences between an African view of religion and a more Eurocentric understanding of religion. Very accessible and engaging, each of the eleven short chapters ends with three discussion questions followed by one or two African prayers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 8 articles from the January 2020 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. In Inculturation in Africa: Challenges and Prospects, Marcel Uwineza, SJ suggests certain paths that the inculturation process could take in Africa. He explains how refusing to inculturate the Gospel message slows down the process of the Church putting down roots in the continent. Pope Francis urges us not to become accomplices of any forms of human trafficking, but instead to forge a new worldwide solidarity and fraternity. Human Trafficking and the Dignity of Work discusses one of the most important and urgent global social responsibilities of the time. In what way is the anthropological and cosmic figure of the couple in the garden the bearer of a theological truth? Jean-Pierre Sonnet, SJ reflects on the twofold perspective that associates the mystery of the garden with that of the human couple in Each Couple is like a Garden: A Biblical Perspective. Juan Antonio Guerrero, SJ suggests three areas where we spend our daily lives as citizens in Urban Life and Citizenship. Public space, work and the family are these areas of our life that sometimes induce paralyzing habits of the heart, claiming they do not encourage relationships or common purposes. The synod for the Amazon was an example of a Church in movement, listening to the Spirit through the cry of the region’s indigenous peoples of the Amazon – its real protagonists. In From the Amazon River to the Tiber: Notes from a Special Synod, Victor Codina, SJ shares insights on aspects of this important ecclesial event. The album Ghosteen, by Australian musician Nick Cave, is a reinterpretation of his mourning for the death of his son. Claudio Zonta SJ says the album is a bridge over the darkness of pain that can only be crossed with the desire that love and pity are really the final words about human existence.

All peoples are saved not by the observance of Jewish law and customs or of that of the carrier-culture of the Gospel message, but by faith and the grace of the Lord. By means of hermeneutical correlation of the JC theology to the present Igbo (Nigerian) Church, the author tries to show how the first century JC resolution of faith-culture conflict between the Jewish and Gentile cultures can be employed for the resolution of similiar faith-culture conflicts in the current Igbo Church in particular, and the African Churches in general. The study seeks to «marry» narrative-inculturation exegetical theological study with missiological and pastoral practice.
