Book Synopsis The Chinese Overseas by : Wang Gungwu
Download or read book The Chinese Overseas written by Wang Gungwu and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese overseas now number 25 to 30 million, yet the 2,000-year history of Chinese attempts to venture abroad and the underlying values affecting that migration have never before been presented in a broad overview. Despite centuries of prohibition against leaving the land and traveling and settling overseas, the earthbound Chinese--first traders, then peasants and workers--eventually found new sources of livelihood abroad. The practice of sojourning, being always temporarily away from home, was the answer the Chinese overseas found to deal with imperial and orthodox concerns. Today their challenge is to find an alternative to either returning or assimilating by seeking a new kind of autonomy in a world that will come to acknowledge the ideal of multicultural states. In pursuing this story, international scholar Wang Gungwu uncovers some major themes of global history: the coming together of Asian and European civilizations, the ambiguities of ethnicity and diasporic consciousness, and the tension between maintaining one's culture and assimilation.
Download or read book Qiaowu written by James Jiann Hua To and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 150 years, China’s interactions with its diaspora have evolved according to the domestic and international geopolitical environment. This relationship (broadly described as qiaowu) is most visible in the form of cultural and economic activities; however, its main purpose is to cultivate, influence, and manage ethnic Chinese as part of a global transnational project to rally support for its proponents. Qiaowu: Extra-Territorial Policies for the Overseas Chinese compares the rival policies and practices of the Chinese Communist Party with the Nationalist Kuomintang and Democratic Progressive Party governments of Taiwan. Political scientist James Jiann Hua To analyzes the role that qiaowu plays in harnessing the power of strategic overseas communities, and highlights the implications for China’s foreign relations.

This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise of China and massive new migrations, China has adjusted its policy towards the Chinese overseas in Southeast Asia and beyond. This book deals with Beijing’s policy which has been a response to the external events involving the Chinese overseas as well as the internal needs of China. It appears that a rising China considers the Chinese overseas as a source of socio-political and economic capital and would extend its protection to them whenever this is not in conflict with its core national interest. The impacts on and the responses of the relevant countries, especially those in Southeast Asia, are also examined
Download or read book China Goes Global written by Huiyao Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainland China businesses are going global, transforming the country from a manufacturing export platform into an overseas investment powerhouse. China Goes Global is the most thorough and up-to-date empirical analysis of the accelerating effort of Chinese companies to go global by investing overseas. It details the overall trends of this activity with respect to its sectors, channels, overseas targets, and particular firms, along the role of Chinese Government policy in facilitating business enterprise globalization. The book offers readers an enterprise level of view outward expansion by Chinese firms that is focused not only on the big-names, but also less well-known, but equally important trailblazing enterprises. In doing so it offers practical suggestions on how firms can tackle the challenges encountered when expanding outward.
Book Synopsis Coming Home to a Foreign Country by : Soon Keong Ong
Download or read book Coming Home to a Foreign Country written by Soon Keong Ong and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ong Soon Keong explores the unique position of the treaty port Xiamen (Amoy) within the China-Southeast Asia migrant circuit and examines its role in the creation of Chinese diasporas. Coming Home to a Foreign Country addresses how migration affected those who moved out of China and later returned to participate in the city's economic revitalization, educational advancement, and urban reconstruction. Ong shows how the mobility of overseas Chinese allowed them to shape their personal and community identities for pragmatic and political gains. This resulted in migrants who returned with new money, knowledge, and visions acquired abroad, which changed the landscape of their homeland and the lives of those who stayed. Placing late Qing and Republican China in a transnational context, Coming Home to a Foreign Country explores the multilayered social and cultural interactions between China and Southeast Asia. Ong investigates the role of Xiamen in the creation of a China-Southeast Asia migrant circuit; the activities of aspiring and returned migrants in Xiamen; the accumulation and manipulation of multiple identities by Southeast Asian Chinese as political conditions changed; and the motivations behind the return of Southeast Asian Chinese and their continual involvement in mainland Chinese affairs. For Chinese migrants, Ong argues, the idea of "home" was something consciously constructed. Ong complicates familiar narratives of Chinese history to show how the emigration and return of overseas Chinese helped transform Xiamen from a marginal trading outpost at the edge of the Chinese empire to a modern, prosperous city and one of the most important migration hubs by the 1930s.
Book Synopsis Migration, Indigenization, and Interaction by : Leo Suryadinata
Download or read book Migration, Indigenization, and Interaction written by Leo Suryadinata and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve chapters included in this book address various issues related to Chinese migration, indigenization and exchange with special reference to the era of globalization. As the waves of Chinese migration started in the last century, the emphasis, not surprisingly, is placed on the ?migrant states? rather than ?indigenous states?. Nevertheless, many chapters are also concerned with issues of ?settling down? and ?becoming part of the local scenes?. However, the settling/integrating process has been interrupted by a globalizing world, new Chinese migration and the rise of China at the end of 20th century.

Download or read book Chinese Overseas written by Chee-Beng Tan and published by Chinese University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The issue of Chinese diaspora is a fascinating phenomenon in the midst of globalism, and there is a growing interest in studies of overseas Chinese, not only overseas but in China itself. This volume, the result of an international conference on Chinese overseas studies, deals with issues of research and documentation of Chinese migration and migrants. It brings together the efforts of scholars and librarians in examining the research and documentation of Chinese overseas. Documentation must go hand in hand with research, and this book reiterates the need for greater cooperation between librarians and scholars. In addition to discussion on research and library and archival documentation, the book also takes a look at Chinese overseas in different parts of the world, especially Southeast Asia and North America, as well as South Africa and Cuba.
Download or read book Chinatown Unbound written by Kay Anderson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Chinatowns’ are familiar places in almost all major cities in the world. In popular Western wisdom, the restaurants, pagodas, and red lanterns are intrinsically equated with a self-contained, immigrant Chinese district, an alien enclave of ‘the East’ in ‘the West’. By the 1980s, when these Western societies had largely given up their racially discriminatory immigration policies and opened up to Asian immigration, the dominant conception of Chinatown was no longer that of an abject ethnic ghetto: rather, Chinatown was now seen as a positive expression of multicultural heritage and difference. By the early 21st century, however, these spatial and cultural constructions of Chinatown as an ‘other’ space – whether negative or positive – have been thoroughly destabilised by the impacts of accelerating globalisation and transnational migration. This book provides a timely and much-needed paradigm shift in this regard, through an in-depth case study of Sydney’s Chinatown. It speaks to the growing multilateral connections that link Australia and Asia (and especially China) together; not just economically, but also socially and culturally, as a consequence of increasing transnational flows of people, money, ideas and things. Further, the book elicits a particular sense of a place in Sydney’s Chinatown: that of an interconnected world in which Western and Asian realms inhabit each other, and in which the orientalist legacy is being reconfigured in new deployments and more complex delimitations. As such, Chinatown Unbound engages with, and contributes to making sense of, the epochal shift in the global balance of power towards Asia, especially China.

Book Synopsis Chinese Indonesians in Post-Suharto Indonesia by : Wu-Ling Chong
Download or read book Chinese Indonesians in Post-Suharto Indonesia written by Wu-Ling Chong and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selfish, obscenely rich, insular, and opportunistic: these remain how Chinese minorities in Indonesia are perceived by the indigenous population. However, far from being passive victims of discrimination and marginalisation, Chong presents a forceful case in which Chinese Indonesians possess the agency to shape their future in the country, particularly in the changing political, business, and socio-cultural environment after the fall of Suharto. While a lack of good governance that promotes the rule of law and accountability allows or even encourages some Chinese to maintain the status quo by perpetuating corrupt business practices inherited from Suharto’s New Order regime, there are other Chinese Indonesians who make full use of the democratic space opened up under the new administrations, acting as agents of reform by participating in electoral politics and establishing inter-ethnic socio-cultural organisations. Building on Anthony Giddens’s structure-agency theory and Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of habitus and field, Chong shows that the Chinese minorities have played an active role in the democratic process, even though they continue to occupy an ambivalent position in Indonesia. The Chinese Indonesians’ diverse strategies to safeguard their personal interests and cultural identities make a stimulating case study of what an ethnic minority could do to make a difference. ‘Backed by formidable research, Chong has produced an intriguing and original view of the political, social, and economic activity of the still precariously placed Chinese minority in Indonesia.’ —Donald L. Horowitz, Duke University; author of Constitutional Change and Democracy in Indonesia ‘In this illuminating study, Chong traces the political economy of Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese minority as they navigate the country’s post-1998 politics, which is more free but still lacks strong rule of law. Focusing especially on Medan and Surabaya, she analyses how some have strongly supported reforms while many continue old practices of surviving and profiting by participating in massive corruption and extortion.’ —Jeffrey A. Winters, Northwestern University; author of Oligarchy
Book Synopsis Protecting China's Interests Overseas by : Andrea Ghiselli
Download or read book Protecting China's Interests Overseas written by Andrea Ghiselli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting China's Interests Overseas provides a fascinating and new window into Chinese foreign and security policymaking. In particular, it shows how the management of non-traditional security issues abroad led to the emergence of China's strategy to defend its interests overseas. This book comes at a critical time, as China has just inaugurated its first overseas military base in Djibouti, thereby establishing a long-term military presence outside Asia. Based on a large number of Chinese primary sources, the book examines how the main actors involved in the making and implementation of Chinese foreign policy understood the problem of protecting the assets and lives of Chinese companies and nationals abroad, especially in North Africa and the Middle East, and interacted with each other depending on their priorities, preferences, and organizational interests. As the different chapters explore various aspects and dynamics within the Chinese foreign and security policy machine, the analysis concludes that the emergence of China's strategy to defend its interests overseas was, to a large extent, crisis-driven. The evacuation of 36,000 Chinese nationals from Libya in 2011 was a critical moment in this process. Henceforth, significant efforts were made to strengthen the capabilities of and coordination between the different agencies under the control of the Chinese leadership, especially the Chinese People's Liberation Army. Consistently, China's military presence abroad expanded and evolved over the years to stabilize the regions where the country's human and economic presence is most significant, and to neutralize the non-traditional security threats against it. However, Chinese policymakers still face important challenges and complex dilemmas on the path to formulate a sustainable policy towards this very difficult issue. Protecting China's Interests Overseas also offers an opportunity to rethink how we study and understand Chinese foreign policymaking.
