Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2002 she married the man of her dreams. In June 2005 they purchased their home in paradise. It was the perfect love nest, the kind of home most people can only dream about. Their private get-a-way was nestled in 5.75 acres of plush exotic land, with a towering forest of landscape and natural habitat, overlooking several creeks and streams with breath taking sunset views from every angle. It was secretly hidden from the world, a place where deer's and rabbits seek refuge; where the falcons soared and roamed freely without fear of discovery. It was the summer of their lives, with a newly built wrap-around deck that lit up the night. They were the envy of all their friends and neighbors. Until one day the perfect dream they once shared came crashing down around them! Their once perfect marriage would be put to the test. Voluntary humility is an honor and privilege best served with a willing, sincere and open heart. To be humbled by God, is an indescribable devastation of heartache and pain for which they would soon discover. September 2009 the flood they once mocked and avoided two years prior, returns with a wicked vengeance, only this time it would take most of the city and their home in paradise with it! Being homeless with only the clothes on their backs, they did not sin nor did they charge God with wrong. They were hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. In this faith based book, Bernita Weston shares with the world how they were able to turn their tragedy into triumph. Find out, "How to Count it ALL Joy, When Faced with Insurmountable Circumstances!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are undoubtedly living in a society and culture that is growing stranger by the day—creating more distance between others, minute by minute. It seems that people are living in their own little bubbles and silos more than ever—with no interest in connecting with people effectively. And it is evident that the rise of the digital age is affecting people mentally and emotionally, leading to voidness and isolation and a sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Billions of people are connecting with an unproductive device in their hands when it should be the word of God! There is no spiritual value when we allow the things of this world to consume our lives more than God’s divine nature. Do we really think anything will improve in our homes, communities, churches, schools, country, and globally if we’re not grounded and connected in the Truths of his word? We must realize that connecting with humans physically, emotionally, and spiritually is how God designed us. Just like our Creator wants a relationship with you and me, he wants us to bond with others so they can also see the experience of his abundant blessings and goodness in our lives. We cannot afford to be on the sidelines because it’s all about cultivating genuine care for God’s creation and putting it into practice for the sake of ourselves and others, now more than ever.

Book excerpt: Jeffrey Stackert explores literary correspondences among the pentateuchal legal corpora and especially the relationships between similar laws in Deuteronomy and the Holiness Legislation (Lev 17-26, the so-called "Holiness Code," as well as significant parts of the Priestly source elsewhere in the Pentateuch). Resemblances between these law collections range from broad structure to fine detail and include treatments of similar legal topics, correlations with regard to sequence of laws, and precise grammatical and lexical correspondences. Yet the nature and basis of these resemblances persist as debated points among biblical scholars. Through an analysis of the pentateuchal laws on asylum, seventh-year release, manumission, and tithes, the author argues that the Holiness Legislation depends upon both the Covenant Collection and Deuteronomy. He also elucidates the compositional logic of the Holiness legislators, showing that these authors do not simply replicate pre-existing legal content. Rather, they employ a method of literary revision in which they reconceptualize source material according to their own ideological biases. In the end, the Holiness Legislation proves to be a "super law" that collects and distills the Priestly and non-Priestly laws that precede it. By accommodating, reformulating, and incorporating various viewpoints from these sources, the Holiness authors create a work that is intended to supersede them all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursue a faith that counts. Numbers can be deceiving. The book of Numbers opens with a count of every person fit to serve during the Israeli’s exodus from Egypt. Yet while over 600,000 were counted, only two were allowed to enter the Promised Land. The lesson? God values quality over quantity. And as the next generation finally experienced God’s promise, we discover that He doesn’t just want us counted as believers, but as people He can count on. Part of Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe's best-selling "BE" commentary series, Be Counted has now been updated with study questions and a new introduction by Ken Baugh. A respected pastor and Bible teacher, Dr. Wiersbe explores how we can make our faith matter. You'll be encouraged to trust His word, and inspired by God, while counting for Him.

Book excerpt: Paul Hinlicky, a leading systematic theologian widely respected for his contributions in contemporary dogmatics, offers a theological reading of Joshua in this addition to the Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible series. Hinlicky compares and contrasts the politics of purity and the politics of redemption in an innovative and illuminating way and locates the book of Joshua in the postexilic genesis of apocalyptic theology. As with other series volumes, this commentary is designed to serve the church, providing a rich resource for preachers, teachers, students, and study groups.

Book excerpt: World Leaders Are Being Assassinated. As the men cheered loudly, there was a brilliant flash and thunderclap. Temporarily blinded, they stumbled back from the Humvee, pushed away by a blast of hot air and smoke. When the smoke cleared, their leader was gone. Where he stood was nothing but the smoldering, melted hood of the Humvee. She slowly turned 360 degrees, sweeping her hand across the horizon. "Josh, there isn't a soul in sight. No cars, airplanes or boats." She paused. "Who do you think would be watching you?" Looking down the beach and watching the surf erase their footprints, he sighed and said softly, "Not who ... what." Impossible is the third book of the award-winning Fuzed Trilogy.

This powerful edited collection contributes to a growing body of work suggesting the importance of understanding how the consequences of digital media use are shaped by family culture, values, practices, and the larger social and economic contexts of families’ lives. Chapters offer case studies, real-life examples, and analyses of large-scale national survey data, and provide insights into previously unexplored topics such as the role of siblings in shaping the home media ecology.

Book excerpt: This practical, positive book reveals the many parenting strategies that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar use as they preside over America’s best-known mega-family. Each time a new baby arrives, the press from around the world clamors for interviews and information. Visitors are amazed to find seventeen (baby number eighteen is due January 1, 2009) well-groomed, well-behaved, well-schooled children in a home that focuses on family, financial responsibility, fun—and must importantly, faith. Readers will learn about the Duggars’ marriage—how they communicate effectively, make family decisions, and find quality time alone. They’ll discover how the Duggars manage to educate all their children at home, while providing experiences that go beyond the family walls, through vacations and educational trips. And they’ll see how the Duggar family manages their finances and lives debt-free—even when they built their own 7,000-square-foot house. Answering the oft asked question—How can I do with one or two children what you do with seventeen(soon to be eighteen)?—Jim Bob and Michelle reveal how they create a warm and welcoming home filled with what Michelle calls “serene chaos.” They show how other parents can succeed whether they’re rearing a single child or several. With spiritual insights, experience-based wisdom, practical tips, and plenty of humorous and tender anecdotes, the Duggars answer the questions that pour into the family’s Web site on a daily basis—especially after every national media interview and TV appearance—including their segments on the Discovery Health Channel’s “Meet the Duggars” series.

Book excerpt: Winner, James Beard Award for Best Book in Vegetable-Focused Cooking Named a Best Cookbook of the Year by the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Bon Appétit, Food Network Magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, USA Today, Seattle Times, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Library Journal, Eater, and more “Never before have I seen so many fascinating, delicious, easy recipes in one book. . . . [Six Seasons is] about as close to a perfect cookbook as I have seen . . . a book beginner and seasoned cooks alike will reach for repeatedly.” —Lucky Peach Joshua McFadden, chef and owner of renowned trattoria Ava Gene’s in Portland, Oregon, is a vegetable whisperer. After years racking up culinary cred at New York City restaurants like Lupa, Momofuku, and Blue Hill, he managed the trailblazing Four Season Farm in coastal Maine, where he developed an appreciation for every part of the plant and learned to coax the best from vegetables at each stage of their lives. In Six Seasons, his first book, McFadden channels both farmer and chef, highlighting the evolving attributes of vegetables throughout their growing seasons—an arc from spring to early summer to midsummer to the bursting harvest of late summer, then ebbing into autumn and, finally, the earthy, mellow sweetness of winter. Each chapter begins with recipes featuring raw vegetables at the start of their season. As weeks progress, McFadden turns up the heat—grilling and steaming, then moving on to sautés, pan roasts, braises, and stews. His ingenuity is on display in 225 revelatory recipes that celebrate flavor at its peak.
