Ethan Smith wrote on this topic, and in so doing, challenged the dismissal of the Indigenous Americans by European settlers. Smith used biblical scripture, similarities in the Hebrew and Native American languages and their name for God, and other points of evidence to prove the connection between Israel and the First Nations. From there he showed how the reunited Hebrew tribes would be restored to Zion before the end of the world. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Smith's book is that it is said to have influenced the Book of Mormon, which was published about seven years after later. As a child, Smith moved away from religion after his parents died but found his way back before he turned 20 and worked in the ministry until his death. Smith wrote several books while serving in the ministry in which he explored prophecies and baptism, among other subjects. But this book remains one of the most controversial of all his publications.

This book is different from other books about the Latter-day Saints (LDS) in at least two ways. First, it focuses on details of LDS doctrine that are relatively unknown, even to church members. Second, because its purpose is to inform, not persuade, it presents these details in a neutral, unflinching, warts-and-all way. The reader can then decide for him- or herself what to believe. As Jensen states in his Introduction, he wrote the book for three audiences. First, he wrote it for himself. Although he grew up in the church and served a church mission, he was often confused about the more cryptic points of LDS doctrine, of which there are many. For example, if someone had asked him to explain in detail the LDS position on angels, or Jews, or Zion, he knew wouldn't have been able to. So he wrote the book to understand - to "get to the bottom of" - the church's more obscure beliefs and follow the implications to their logical conclusion. Second, he wrote it for non-Mormons who are curious about the religion and seek a book that is unbiased and informative while also being light and readable. Third, he wrote it for members of the church who are fuzzy on the details of the topics discussed in the book and would like to understand them better. The church has always placed great stock in education, especially as it relates to God's plans for us. This book will help educate church members on the finer points of their doctrine - on what one actually believes, or should believe, as a Latter-day Saint. Were Adam and Eve married? These nine have obtained the same knowledge-even the perfect knowledge as to God's reality. This experiential knowledge obtained is on par with many who have entered God's Presence through a near-death experience. In either scenario, one can never be the same thereafter. Each will have received "a mighty change" or conversion of the heart towards God. This same knowledge is available to all who have come under heavenly contract with God through the ordinances by proper authority. The Lectures on Faith teach that "whatsoever constitutes the salvation of one will constitute the salvation of every creature which will be saved" (Lectures on Faith, 7:9). Jesus said to Nicodemus: "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). Being born of the Spirit is much more than receiving the Father's promise through "confirmation" after being baptized by water. There is a broken-hearted covenant and cry of the soul we must each make in the depths of repentance, performed in complete surrender, having a committed willingness to do His will in all things thereafter. Once these and other conditions are met, the fulfillment of the Father's promise can then be made experientially "real" for us in our lives-unto the praise and glory of God. This is when we transition from the knowledge about God to the actual, perfect knowledge of God. Indeed, this is salvation. The path is real and He is coming.
