Book excerpt: Jorge de Sena (1919-1978) was regarded by many as not only the premier contemporary poet of Portugal, but also the third of all time after Camões and Pessoa. He published more than a hundred books in a wide range of genres that included cultural studies, literary theory, essay, translation, criticism, drama, fiction, and poetry. His diverse formal training included Portugal's naval academy, a Licentiate in civil engineering from the University of Oporto, and a Ph.D. in literature from the University of São Paulo. He taught at two universities in Brazil before coming to the United States in 1965, where he accepted a full professorship at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Then in 1970, he moved to the University of California at Santa Barbara where he was chair of two departments: Spanish and Portuguese, and Comparative Literature.Jorge de Sena: 100 Poems and More contains representative poems from each of his fourteen volumes of poetry, in both the original Portuguese as well as in English translation. There is also a useful introductory study, notes on each book of poetry, photographs, and an informative forward by his wife Mécia on Sena's long association with Anglo-American letters. The appendix contains a bibliographic listing of all of Sena's publications and two studies: a personal reminiscence of his teaching style and mentoring while a professor in the United States, and an analysis of some of his most significant moral teachings. Also provided is a reference to access a color video of Jorge de Sena reading his own poetry that includes a photo-biographical introduction and an interview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jorge de Sena (1919-78) was a Portuguese poet, critic, essayist, novelist, dramatist, translator and university professor. His opposition to the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal led to him go into voluntary exile in Brazil in 1959 and, after the military coup in Brazil in 1964, he moved to the United States. He taught first at the University of Wisconsin and, for the last eight years of his life, at the University of California in Santa Barbara, where he was Professor of Comparative Literature. After the bloodless coup in Portugal on 25 April 1974, he did return to Lisbon, but when no university there offered him a teaching post, he went back to California, feeling embittered and disillusioned, and died of cancer four years later.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of eleven short stories is the first collection of fiction by Jorge de Sena (1919-1978) to be published in English. Sena's stories reveal his broad thematic and technical range. The title story, By The Rivers Of Babylon, is a lyrical piece about the great sixteenth-century Portuguese poet Luis de Camoes. This story, which draws on Sena's own struggles as a poet as well as on his political exile from Portugal in 1959, reflects strong autobiographical themes, as do many of the stories.

Download or read book Embodying Pessoa written by Anna Klobucka and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multifaceted and labyrinthine oeuvre of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (18881935) is distinguished by having been written and published under more than seventy different names. These were not mere pseudonyms, but what Pessoa termed 'heteronyms,' fully realized identities possessed not only of wildly divergent writing styles and opinions, but also of detailed biographies. In many cases, their independent existences extended to their publication of letters and critical readings of each other's works (and those of Pessoa 'himself'). Long acclaimed in continental Europe and Latin America as a towering presence in literary modernism, Pessoa has more recently begun to receive the attention of an English-speaking public. Embodying Pessoa responds to this new growth of interest. The collection's twelve essays, preceded by a general introduction and grouped into four themed sections, apply a range of current interpretative models both to the more familiar canon of Pessoa's output, and to less familiar texts in many cases only recently published. As a whole, this work diverges from traditional Pessoa criticism by testifying to the importance of corporeal physicality in his heteronymous experiment and to the prominence of representations of (gendered) sexuality in his work.
Book Synopsis The Poetics of the Occasion by : Marian Zwerling Sugano

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although Mallarme is commonly viewed as the high priest of the autonomous work of art, by far the bulk of his actual poetic writing was occasional verse. With few exceptions the works written after 1873 manifest a reinvestment in the world subsequent to the metaphysical crises of the 1860's. In addition to the "Tombeaux," the toasts, and certain of the "Eventails," Mallarme composed the Vers de circonstance, more than 450 quatrains and distichs inscribed on envelopes, postcards, calling cards, Easter eggs, small stones, photographs, and jugs of Calvados. This is the first comprehensive reading and analysis of the neglected late poetry, heretofore dismissed as of marginal interest." "This book has a dual purpose. By exploring the occasional verse of Mallarme, which itself thematizes the problematics of the occasion, the author seeks to rehabilitate such writing for critical study. She does this not by proclaiming its high seriousness, but by insisting on its casual, amenable, public nature. Unlike previous critics, who have often apologized for straying into the fringes of the canon, the author delights in the marginal, insisting that in a poetics of the occasion, traditional oppositions such as center/margin become skewed and break down." "The author's second purpose is to come to a better understanding of Mallarme in light of what he actually wrote, rather than the work projected in his correspondence and prose articles, which has claimed so much critical attention. Each of the chapters of the book highlights one aspect of occasional poetry through an investigation of representative texts, both canonical and occasional. The author also discusses the relationship between Mallarme's poetics and the plastic arts, tracing the changing conception of the representation of the monument from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, as well as the correspondences between the more radical aspects of Mallarme's practice of writing and the contemporary arts." "Far more than a study of a single writer, this book is the first to propose a pragmatic definition of occasional literature, to undertake a broad study of the problem of occasion in literature, and to trace the historical trajectory of occasional writing as a specific discourse. The book is illustrated with 27 halftones."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
