Book excerpt: A midwife is in the thick of it, she sees it all, wrote Jennifer Worth, author of Call the Midwife. Jordemoder: Poems of a Midwife is a portal into a world of thick, rich, raw, rent life. It is midwifing in its broadest sense--from releasing a newborn's stuck shoulders or catching a baby in the caul, to Socratic questioning around body autonomy, social justice and climate sustainability. The poems are layered and bi-cultural, rooted in contrasts between America and Sweden, as well as between colonial/industrial and ecological/relational ways of caring for each other and the earth. Through humor, love, art and aging, Jordemoder is a collection of midwifed hope. For more information, please visit www.ingridandersson.info.--Ingrid Andersson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bountiful group of poems--direct, honest, and revelatory--that reflect on language, nature, old age, young love, Judaism, and our current politics, from one of our most read and admired poets "Words are my business," Marge Piercy begins her twentieth collection of poetry, a glance back at a lifetime of learning, loving, grieving, and fighting for the disenfranchised, and a look forward at what the future holds for herself, her family and friends, and her embattled country. In the opening section, Piercy tells of her childhood in Detroit, with its vacant lots and scrappy children, the bike that gave her wings, her ambition at fourteen to "gobble" down all knowledge, and a too-early marriage ("I put on my first marriage / like a girdle my skinny body / didn't need"). We then leap into the present, her "twilight zone," where she is "learning to be quiet," learning to give praise despite it all. There are funny poems about medicine ads with their dire warnings, and some possible plusses about being dead: "I'll never do another load of laundry . . ." There is "comfort in old bodies / coming together," in a partner's warmth--"You're always warm: warm hands / smooth back sleek as a Burmese cat./ Sunny weather outside and in." Piercy has long been known for her political poems, and here we have her thoughts on illegal immigrants, dying languages, fraught landscapes, abortion, President-speak. She examines her nonbeliever's need for religious holidays and spiritual depth, and the natural world is appreciated throughout. On the Way Out, Turn Off the Light is yet more proof of Piercy's love and mastery of language--it is moving, stimulating, funny, and full of the stuff of life.

Book excerpt: A managing position at Nastenka Cleaning Service--whose employees are migrant women from Asia--is offered to the Muscovite Kirillov out of the blue. The situation is complicated by the fact that Kirillov is planning to leave for Norway and expecting his bride, a typical European with a rather rigid interpretation of freedom and tolerance, to come visit. The thought that she will learn about his work and consider it to involve the exploitation of "Oriental women" terrifies him and makes him prevaricate in order to hide his "harem."

Book excerpt: Jim Heynen's stories about unnamed farm boys first appeared many years ago with The Man Who Kept Cigars in His Cap. Several collections of the "boy stories" have been published since then and have been models in the short-short or prose poem form now used by many other writers. This is the first collection to focus on the youngest boy, a character who can be a dreamer one minute, a trouble-maker the next, and a problem-solver the next. The youngest boy's charm is in his unpredictability. Millions of middle-grade students have already read some of Heynen's short boy stories used in testing booklets across the country. The Youngest Boy will appeal to readers from middle-schoolers to adults.

Book excerpt: Poetry. "In language luminous and true, with grace, good humor, generosity, and affectionate attention, Robin Chapman unflinchingly faces the local and global, even galactic disasters, that daily assail us. Casting a sober eye on the ills of our society, most of our own making--climate change, environmental degradation, inequality, bigotry, militarism--she refuses 'the beautiful poetry of grief' and instead affirms 'what heals, what carries us, through.' This inimitable book is ultimately a book of wonder and consolation, lovingly invoking the connectivity of the natural world--the only home we know--to reveal a wholeness at the heart of things. With, as she insists, 'the earth in its journey turning us again / toward the light. The text of good will arriving,' what can we do but embrace her joyful invitation to 'now, love, put on your clown nose / and dance with me under the wandering planets.'"--Ronald Wallace "THE ONLY HOME WE KNOW is a book where memory functions as a spirit guide through the various details, wonders and terrors of our world. It is a book that takes a private hurt and makes it into a lyrical space where beauty is possible, is necessary. There is a tenderness and exuberance here that win me over, 'I'd mandate that every child at birth would be issued a drum,' the author says. Indeed. Bravo."--Ilya Kaminsky

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Lexi Rudnitsky Editor’s Choice Award, this sensuous collection bravely endeavors to share the wisdom age confers. In Shoreless, her fifth collection of poetry, Enid Shomer continues to explore her passionate relationship with the Florida landscape, the inextricable web of family, and the challenges of the body. While studded with the austere recognitions of growing older, these poems are punctuated by humor and play—formally elegant and inventive, beautifully textured and nuanced. Throughout the book, Shomer employs the language of science and Eros to uncover the exquisite truths of pain and pleasure.

Book excerpt: Copper Yearning invests itself in a compassionate dual vision—bearing witness to the lush beauty of our intricately woven environments and to the historical and contemporary perils that threaten them. Kimberly Blaeser’s fourth collection of poetry deftly reflects her Indigenous perspective and a global awareness. Through vividly rendered images, the poems dwell among watery geographies, alive to each natural nuance, alive also to the uncanny. Set in fishing boats, in dreams, in prisons, in memory, or in far flung countries like Bahrain, the pieces sing of mythic truths and of the poignant everyday injustices. But, whether resisting threats to effigy mounds or inhabiting the otherness of river otter, ultimately they voice a universal longing for a place of balance, a way of being in the world—for the ineffable.
