Book excerpt: Photostatic copies, probably from 1920-1936, of original ms. copies of Jonathan Carver's journals, describing his travels between May 1766 and July 1768, throughout the Great Lakes Regions, from Michillimackinac to the Mississippi River, and along the Wisconsin, Fox, St. Pierre, and Chippewa Rivers. Ten leaves of "survey journals" summarize different portions of Carver's trip, such as Detroit-Michilimackinac, Lake Michigan to Green Bay, up the Fox River, and along the Wisconsin River, including, in table form, the day, date, course, distance traveled in miles, and observations on the route. Entries describe the geography, exploration history, and flora and fauna of the area, and customs and religious practices of the Naudowessie, Saugies, Ottigaumies, Winnebagoes, Chippeways, and Menomonees. There is also a Naudowessie vocabulary list. The ms. concludes as Carver returns to Boston, via Detroit and Philadelphia in July 1768. Vol. 2 contains the same journal as v. 1, although in a more publishable form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would go through several editions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and be translated into French, German, Dutch, and Greek. Out of print for more than a hundred years, this influential work is once again available due to the efforts of historian Norman Gelb. Written in a charmingly unpretentious style, and illustrated with reproduction of the original map and copper plates appearing in the original 1778 edition, Carver's book offers a unique firsthand account of an American continent untouched by European influence. But above all, Carver's depictions of the Naudowessies, with whom he spent an entire winter and among whom he was to become an honorary chief, provides one of the first in-depth accounts of day-to-day life in a Native American culture.

Book Synopsis Early Midwestern Travel Narratives by : Robert Rogers Hubach
Download or read book Early Midwestern Travel Narratives written by Robert Rogers Hubach and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, Early Midwestern Travel Narratives records and describes first-person records of journeys in the frontier and early settlement periods which survive in both manuscript and print. Geographically, it deals with the states once part of the Old Northwest Territory-Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota-and with Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska. Robert Hubach arranged the narratives in chronological order and makes the distinction among diaries (private records, with contemporaneously dated entries), journals (non-private records with contemporaneously dated entries), and "accounts," which are of more literary, descriptive nature. Early Midwestern Travel Narratives remains to this day a unique comprehensive work that fills a long existing need for a bibliography, summary, and interpretation of these early Midwestern travel narratives.
