Consequently the joint design of the analog front-end and of the digital baseband algorithms has become an important field of research. It enables the wireless systems and chip designers to more effectively trade the communication performance with the production cost. Digital Compensation for Analog Front-Ends provides a systematic approach to designing a digital communication system. It covers in detail the digital compensation of many non-idealities, for a wide class of emerging broadband standards and with a system approach in the design of the receiver algorithms. In particular, system strategies for joint estimation of synchronization and front-end non-ideality parameters are emphasized. The book is organized to allow the reader to gradually absorb the important information and vast quantity of material on this subject. The first chapter is a comprehensive introduction to the emerging wireless standards which is followed by a detailed description of the front-end non-idealities in chapter two. Chapter three then uses this information to explore what happens when the topics introduced in the first two chapters are merged. The book concludes with two chapters providing an in-depth coverage of the estimation and compensation algorithms. This book is a valuable reference for wireless system architects and chip designers as well as engineers or managers in system design and development. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation for Multicarrier Communications Submitted by Li Cheng For the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in Feb., 2004 Multicarrier (MC) transmission is a promising technology in broadband wireless access involving high-throughput data transmission. MC communications are advantageous over single-carrier transmission in dealing with inter-symbol interference (ISI) due to the channel delay spread. However, MC communications also have certain drawbacks, including the vulnerability to carrier frequency offset (CFO) arising from the difference of oscillator frequencies between the transmitter and the receiver or from the Doppler shift. The performance of MC systems degrades severely even if the CFO is a small fraction of the subcarrier spacing. Therefore, correction of CFO is very important for MC communications. This thesis considers two variants of MC technologies, OFDM and MC-CDMA, and investigates CFO estimation for both systems. For OFDM systems, a semi-blind CFO estimation algorithm utilizing the embedded pilot tones, which are primarily used for channel estimation, is proposed for slowly-varying multipath channels. The algorithm is bandwidth efficient because it requires no training symbols. It is also demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can be regarded as the general form of the virtual-carrier-based CFO estimation algorithm previously proposed in the literature. For the purpose of practical implementation, a reduced-complexity estimator is also developed. It offers a tradeoff between estimation accuracy and implementation complexity. It is shown by simulation results that the proposed algorithm outperforms the cyclic-prefix-based algorithm in terms of the estimated CFO mean-square error performance. For MC- CDMA systems, a blind CFO estimator is proposed for the downlink transmission, where all users' signals are synchronously transmitted. The estimation scheme consists of two stages: feed-forward acquisition and error-feedback data-directed tracking. The acquisition stage is implemented utilizing the orthogonality among spreading codes and it is capable of bringing the CFO as large as the signal bandwidth to a small value. The residual CFO is refined by the tracking stage, which estimates the CFO and users' data simultaneously based on the maximum likelihood criterion. A reduced-complexity estimator based on the zero-padding FFT technique is also developed to reduce the implementation complexity. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by extensive computer simulations. The mobile communication industry has named the different major changes as generations namely 1G, 2G,..5G. We are presently looking at deployment of 5G technologies. The work for 6G has already started. This book is focused on the waveform design of 6G. It presents a discourse on a potential waveform for 6G namely Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation. OTFS has a distinct feature when compared to earlier generation waveforms such that information bearing signal is placed in the delay Doppler domain as opposed to the usual placement of such signals in the time-frequency domain. This unique feature of OTFS enables it to overcome several disadvantages of a very popular and highly successful waveform namely Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). OTFS is known to be more resilient to frequency offset and Doppler which is one of the key drawbacks of OFDM. With this feature, OTFS, can support higher mobility as well as higher frequency bands of operation which is also one of the key requirements of the next generation wireless communication technologies. The implementation complexity of OTFS remains comparable to that of OFDM. It is found that OTFS provides significant SNR advantage, higher resilience, lower PAPR, lower out of band signal leakage and higher multi-user spectral efficiency than that of OFDM. This book addresses• Fundamental signal model of OTFS. • Receiver design for OTFS• Channel estimation in OTFS• Multiple Access through non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA-OTFS) The contents of the books are primarily outcome of the research work done at the G. S. Sanyal School of Telecommunications, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Kharagpur, India. Orthogonal Time Frequency Space Modulation : A waveform for 6G is ideal for personnel the wireless communication industry as well as academic staff and master/research students in electrical engineering with a specialization in wireless communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transmission of information over a wireless medium often introduces additional unknown variables corrupting the primary signal of interest. These unknowns originate from different sources (e.g., channel distortions or inultiuser interference) and possess different characteristics (additive or multiplicative, static or time-varying). A consequence of this phenomenon is that the extra unknowns need to be taken into consideration at the receiver when detecting the desired signal. The factor graph depiction of this problem setting is straightforward. Yet performing exact inference on the graph to optimally remove the effects of distortion via direct belief propagation is often computationally prohibitive. This thesis aims to establish a new framework, based on variational inference, to guide the design of near-optimal algorithms for joint detection and estimation in such a scenario. The application of this framework in the OFDM area results in a novel detector with phase noise cancellation capability. The proposed algorithm generates near optimal soft estimates of the desired OFDM signal in the presence of unknown phase noise. To provide accurate channel information for this detector, we also propose an optimal (maximum a posteriori) joint estimator for the channel impulse response, carrier frequency offset amid phase noise. This implies that the frequency synchronization and channel estimation algorithms for OFDM can be derived from statistical estimation theory even in the presence of phase noise. This variational inference framework is also used to established a unified approach for studying joint detection and decoding in multiple-access and ISI channels. It produces low-complexity, near-optimal detector/estimator designs for turbo receivers, including the built-in capability to deal with channel uncertainty. Various existing turbo receivers can be seen as its special cases, leading to insights on how new improvements can be made.

In this work, we address the above issue by two aspects. First, we develop training signal design for not only achieving low complexity reliable receiver processing algorithms, but also improving the theoretical limit. Second, we develop low complexity high performance receiver algorithms for both single user and multiuser system. We first investigate the optimal periodic preamble design for frequency offset estimation over frequency-selective fading channels by minimizing the average Cramer-Rao bound (CRB). The proposed design includes the optimal sequence structure design and the optimal signal design, and brings new dimensions into the existing theory of the training signal designs for frequency offset estimation. To track the channel variations as well as the phase shift, data-pilot multiplexing scheme is commonly used in OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplex) systems. The two performance metrics which are not jointly incorporated yet in the existing data-pilot multiplexing scheme design are the number of data tones transmitted over one OFDM symbol (data throughput) and the channel response and phase estimation performance. In this work, we propose two multiplexing schemes which significantly improve the estimation performance with low data throughput sacrifice, resulting in a substantial performance improvement over current pilot-data multiplexed schemes. In the uplink of OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) systems, synchronization and channel estimation problems become more challenging since multiuser, multi-dimension parameters rather than single user parameters issue have to be estimated. The existing techniques have one or more of the following unfavorable requirements: high computation complexity, loss of frequency diversity, and performance sensitivity to the number of subscribe stations. To address the above drawbacks, we propose several training designs as well as the corresponding estimators for OFDMA uplink in this thesis, yielding robust low complexity estimators with enhanced performance.

Book excerpt: Interference and jamming severely disrupt our ability to communicate by decreasing the effective signal-to-noise ratio and by making parameter estimation difficult at the receiver. The objective of this research work is to design robust wireless systems and algorithms to suppress the adverse effects of non-intentional co-channel interference (CCI) or intentional jamming. In particular, we develop chip-combining schemes with timing, channel, and noise-power estimation techniques, all of which mitigate CCI or jamming. We also exploit the spatial diversity and iterative receiver techniques for this purpose. Most of the existing timing estimation algorithms are robust against either large frequency offsets or CCI, but not against both at the same time. Hence, we develop a new frame boundary estimation method that is robust in the presence of severe co-channel interference and large carrier-frequency offsets. To solve the high peak-to-average-power ratio problem of a multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system and enhance its robustness against fading and jamming, we propose a constant-envelope MC-CDMA system employing cyclic delay diversity (CDD) as transmit diversity. We analyze the diversity order, coding gain, and bit-error rate upper bound. We also propose a blind, accurate, and computationally efficient signal-to-noise ratio estimator for the proposed system. We propose a configurable robust anti-jam receiver that estimates the frequency- or time-domain jammer state information (JSI) and uses it for chip combining in the corresponding domain. A soft-JSI-based chip-combining technique is proposed that outperforms conventional hard-JSI-based chip combining. We also derive a chip combiner that provides sufficient statistics to the decoder. Channel estimation is necessary for coherent signal detection and JSI estimation. Conversely, knowledge of the jamming signal power and JSI of different subcarriers can improve the accuracy of the channel estimates. Hence, we propose joint iterative estimation of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel coefficients, jamming power, and JSI for a coded MC-CDMA MIMO system operating under jamming and a time-varying frequency-selective fading channel. Finally, we reduce the computational complexity of the JSI-based anti-jam receivers by introducing an expectation-maximization-based joint channel and noise-covariance estimator that does not need either the subcarrier JSI or the individual powers of the AWGN and jamming signal.
