Download or read book Joinings written by Jonathan Davis-Secord and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of the use of compound words in Old English poetry, homilies, and philosophy, Joinings explores the effect of compounds on style, pace, clarity, and genre in Anglo-Saxon vernacular literature. Jonathan Davis-Secord demonstrates how compounds affect the pacing of passages in Beowulf, creating slow-motion narrative at moments of significant violence; how their structural complexity gives rhetorical emphasis to phrases in the homilies of Wulfstan; and how they help to mix quotidian and elevated diction in Cynewulf's Juliana and the Old English translations of Boethius. His work demonstrates that compound words were the epitome of Anglo-Saxon vernacular verbal art, combining grammar, style, and culture in a manner unlike any other feature of Old English.
Book Synopsis Ergodic Theory via Joinings by : Eli Glasner
Download or read book Ergodic Theory via Joinings written by Eli Glasner and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces modern ergodic theory. It emphasizes a new approach that relies on the technique of joining two (or more) dynamical systems. This approach has proved to be fruitful in many recent works, and this is the first time that the entire theory is presented from a joining perspective. Another new feature of the book is the presentation of basic definitions of ergodic theory in terms of the Koopman unitary representation associated with a dynamical system and the invariant mean on matrix coefficients, which exists for any acting groups, amenable or not. Accordingly, the first part of the book treats the ergodic theory for an action of an arbitrary countable group. The second part, which deals with entropy theory, is confined (for the sake of simplicity) to the classical case of a single measure-preserving transformation on a Lebesgue probability space.

Book Synopsis Companion to Heidegger's Contributions to Philosophy by : Charles E. Scott
Download or read book Companion to Heidegger's Contributions to Philosophy written by Charles E. Scott and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-07-24 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of the first English translation of Martin Heidegger's BeitrÀge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis) marked a significant event for Heidegger studies. Considered by scholars to be his most important work after Being and Time, Contributions to Philosophy (From Enowning) elaborates what Heidegger calls "being-historical-thinking," a project in which he undertakes to reshape what it means both to think and to be. Contributions is an indispensable book for scholars and students of Heidegger, but it is also one of his most difficult because of its aphoristic style and unusual language. In this Companion 14 eminent Heidegger scholars share strategies for reading and understanding this challenging work. Overall approaches for becoming familiar with Heidegger's unique language and thinking are included, along with detailed readings of key sections of the work. Experienced readers and those coming to the text for the first time will find the Companion an invaluable guide to this pivotal text in Heidegger's philosophical corpus.
Book Synopsis Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems by : Idris Assani
Download or read book Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems written by Idris Assani and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the workshop on recent developments in ergodic theory and dynamical systems on March 2011 and March 2012 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The articles in this volume cover several aspects of vibrant research in ergodic theory and dynamical systems. It contains contributions to Teichmuller dynamics, interval exchange transformations, continued fractions, return times averages, Furstenberg Fractals, fractal geometry of non-uniformly hyperbolic horseshoes, convergence along the sequence of squares, adic and horocycle flows, and topological flows. These contributions illustrate the connections between ergodic theory and dynamical systems, number theory, harmonic analysis, probability, and algebra. Two surveys are included which give a nice introduction for interested young or senior researcher to some active research areas. Overall this volume provides a very useful blend of techniques and methods as well as directions of research on general convergence phenomena in ergodic theory and dynamical systems.
Book Synopsis The Ergodic Theory of Discrete Sample Paths by : Paul C. Shields
Download or read book The Ergodic Theory of Discrete Sample Paths written by Paul C. Shields and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about finite-alphabet stationary processes, which are important in physics, engineering, and data compression. The focus is on the combinatorial properties of typical finite sample paths drawn from a stationary, ergodic process. A primary goal, only partially realized, is to develop a theory based directly on sample path arguments with minimal appeals to the probability formalism. A secondary goal is to give a careful presentation of the many models for stationary finite-alphabet processes that have been developed in probability theory, ergodic theory, and information theory.
