Book excerpt: Rosanne Cash Says "'I have wonderful memories of my dad's decades-long friendship with the wonderful Henry Vaccaro, and his book vividly brought them back to life. Henry's conversational tone and crystal clear recollections make 'Johnny Cash is a Friend of Mine' instantly engaging." Johnny Cash is a Friend of Mine by Henry Vaccaro Chronicles a NJ businessman's 30 year friendship with Johnny Cash, jam packed with over a 200 never before seen photos and behind the scenes anecdotes, Johnny Cash is a Friend of Mine provides a glimpse into this legendary private national treasure of man we know as the Man in Black. Even though it has been almost ten years since the great mans death, Johnny Cash lives on in American music legend as if he were still here, his guitar slung over his back, walking down a lonesome highway somewhere in our collective imaginations. If nothing else, thanks to his long and prolific career, that boom chicka boom sound still rings out from jukeboxes and stages across the land, and will for hundreds of years to come. But while many movies and books and interviews talk about the star, few that I've read talk about the man himself or at least, not the way I knew him. My book, Johnny Cash is a Friend of Mine, details my 30-year friendship with one of the best men I've ever known. I was not one of Johnny's musically skilled friends or one of his celebrity friends, but yet I was often there on the bus or backstage in his dressing room. I was even, on one of the saddest days of my life, an honorary pallbearer at his funeral. Johnny and I took our families to Bimini for vacations, and we spent many an evening gorging on Italian food in my hometown of Asbury Park, NJ. We even bought a hotel together there. Johnny and June loved Asbury Park so much they made it part time home. Via a little bit of my own life story as a successful New Jersey businessman, building contractor and co-founder and Chairman of the Board of the Kramer Guitar Company, this book tells about that other side of Johnny, the side that wasn't constantly tanned and weathered by the limelight that always (and rightly) shone upon him. Because we all know how talented Johnny was musically and professionally, this book instead tells of his quiet side, his helpful side, his humanitarian side. It talks of his partnership with June, an amazing person in her own right, and it details the rare times in his hard-working life when he got a chance to slow down and catch a breath. Complete with pictures and anecdotes, Johnny Cash is a Friend of Mine was almost as fun to compile as it was to be with the Man in Black himself. For those of us who knew him personally, this book will create a lot of, Oh yeah! I remember that!?-moments, and for those who didn't have the honor and pleasure, this book will help you get to know him.

He was a humble man from humble beginnings in California. His legacy is well chronicled in hundreds of articles written about him in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, USA Today Newspaper, The Los Angeles Times, and dozens of others. His 50 plus year career garnered Merle the highest awards that are given to an artist, ie; Lifetime Grammy, Country Music Hall of Fame, Kennedy Center Honors, Songwriters Hall of Fame. I was 14 when I met Merle and his wife to be Bonnie Owens, at this writing I'm still just a kid of 70 years old. This book traces the beginning of my observations of this uniquely talented man. It's a positive book that I hope his fans will enjoy. He was a kind and onery man, very funny and very serious. He was a proud American and loved every State and the people in it.

Book excerpt: The national bestseller celebrated as "the ultimate Johnny Cash biography . . . Rock writer great Robert Hilburn goes deep." -- Rolling Stone In this, the definitive biography of an American legend, Robert Hilburn conveys the unvarnished truth about a musical superstar. Johnny Cash's extraordinary career stretched from his days at Sun Records with Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis to the remarkable creative last hurrah, at age 69, that resulted in the brave, moving "Hurt" video. As music critic for the Los Angeles Times, Hilburn knew Cash throughout his life: he was the only music journalist at the legendary Folsom Prison concert in 1968, and he interviewed both Cash and his wife June Carter just months before their deaths. Drawing upon a trove of never-before-seen material from the singer's inner circle, Hilburn creates an utterly compelling, deeply human portrait of a towering figure in country music, a seminal influence in rock, and an icon of American popular culture. Hilburn's reporting shows the astonishing highs and deep lows that marked the journey of a man of great faith and humbling addiction who throughout his life strove to use his music to lift people's spirits.

Book excerpt: When Johnny Cash died in September 2003, the world mourned the loss of the greatest country music star of all time. I Walked the Line is the life story of Vivian Cash, Johnny's first wife and the mother of his four daughters. It is a tale of long-kept secrets, lies revealed, betrayal and, at last, the truth. Johnny and Vivian were married for nearly fourteen years. These years spanned Johnny's military service in Germany, his earliest musical inclinations, their struggling newlywed years, Johnny's first record deal with Sun Records (alongside Elvis Presley), his astounding rise to stardom, and his well-known battles with pills and the law. Vivian decided that, near the end of her life and with backing from Johnny, she should tell the whole story, even the parts at odds with the iconic Cash family image such as Johnny's drug problems; Vivian's confrontation with June Carter about her affair with Johnny and, most sensationally, the Cash family secret of June's lifelong addiction to drugs and the events leading up to her death. Also revealed are unpublished love letters between the couple, family photographs and artefacts. I Walked the Line is a powerful memoir of joy and happiness, injustice and triumph and is an essential read for all Cash fans.

Book excerpt: A leading historian argues that Johnny Cash was the most important political artist of his time Johnny Cash was an American icon, known for his level, bass-baritone voice and somber demeanor, and for huge hits like “Ring of Fire” and “I Walk the Line.” But he was also the most prominent political artist in the United States, even if he wasn’t recognized for it in his own lifetime, or since his death in 2003. Then and now, people have misread Cash’s politics, usually accepting the idea of him as a “walking contradiction.” Cash didn’t fit into easy political categories—liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, hawk or dove. Like most people, Cash’s politics were remarkably consistent in that they were based not on ideology or scripts but on empathy—emotion, instinct, and identification. Drawing on untapped archives and new research on social movements and grassroots activism, Citizen Cash offers a major reassessment of a legendary figure.

This book was released on 2009-02-25 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Johnny Cash has been depicted—and has depicted himself—as a walking contradiction: social protestor and establishment patriot, drugged wildman and devout Christian crusader, rebel outlaw hillbilly thug and elder statesman. Leigh H. Edwards explores the allure of this paradoxical image and its cultural significance. She argues that Cash embodies irresolvable contradictions of American identity that reflect foundational issues in the American experience, such as the tensions between freedom and patriotism, individual rights and nationalism, the sacred and the profane. She illustrates how this model of ambivalence is a vital paradigm for American popular music, and for American identity in general. Making use of sources such as Cash's autobiographies, lyrics, music, liner notes, and interviews, Edwards pays equal attention to depictions of Cash by others, such as Vivian Cash's publication of his letters to her, documentaries and music journalism about him, Walk the Line, and fan club materials found in the archives at the Country Music Foundation in Nashville, to create a full portrait of Cash and his significance as a cultural icon.

Book excerpt: A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE ADVENTURES OF FIRST-RATE STORYTELLER, GUITARIST, AND RELENTLESS ROAD WARRIOR JESSE DAYTON Jesse Dayton’s story reads like a who’s who of American music. In his debut memoir Beaumonster, Dayton reveals the stranger-than-fiction encounters and outlandish experiences that have ensued across his wide-ranging career. After sneaking into night clubs to play gigs in his youth, eighteen-year-old Dayton and his trio began packing clubs and theaters across Houston, Dallas, and Austin. His first solo record which featured great luminaries like Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Johnny Gimble, hit number one on the Americana radio charts and then he was off to the races— touring the world solo and with punk legends Social Distortion and the Supersuckers. While doing press in Nashville, he caught the attention of Waylon Jennings and was whisked off to Woodland Studios, where he was greeted by none other than Johnny Cash, who told Dayton, “We’ve been waiting for you.” Since then, Dayton’s ride across the entertainment industry, traversing genres and formats, has only gotten wilder. Whether it’s playing guitar on records and film with the likes of Cash, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Glen Campbell and Duff McKagan; writing and recording soundtracks for horror director/rockstar Rob Zombie; directing Malcolm McDowell and Sid Haig in his own horror movie; filling in for the iconic punk band X’s guitarist; joining Ryan Bingham on tour; or the many solo and guest projects he continues to work on, Dayton is down to leave his mark, making Beaumonster a uniquely entertaining tale that will impress new and old fans alike.

Book excerpt: There are few creative acts more mysterious and magical than writing a song. But what if the goal wasn't so mysterious and was actually achievable for anyone who wants to experience more magic and creativity in their life? That's something that anyone will be inspired to do after reading Jeff Tweedy's How to Write One Song. Why one song? Because the difference between one song and many songs isn't a cute semantic trick—it's an important distinction that can simplify a notoriously confusing art form. The idea of becoming a capital-S songwriter can seem daunting, but approached as a focused, self-contained event, the mystery and fear subsides, and songwriting becomes an exciting pursuit. And then there is the energizing, nourishing creativity that can open up. How to Write One Song brings readers into the intimate process of writing one song—lyrics, music, and putting it all together—and accesses the deep sense of wonder that remains at the heart of this curious, yet incredibly fulfilling, artistic act. But it’s equally about the importance of making creativity part of your life every day, and of experiencing the hope, inspiration, and joy available to anyone who’s willing to get started.
