Book excerpt: John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West is the first comprehensive study in more than fifty years of this member of the great triumvirate of American Regionalists: Thomas Hart Benton, Curry, and Grant Wood. It revives the reputation of one of the most important and controversial artists of the first half of the twentieth century, whose paintings of farm life in his native Kansas (including baptisms and tornados), of the circus, of American history, and of the American scene in general were dramatically eclipsed by the ascendancy of abstract art and the New York School at midcentury. 68 colour & 114 b/w illustrations

Download or read book Cultivating Citizens written by Lauren Kroiz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cultivating Citizens rethinks the aesthetics and politics of regionalism in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. During this period, painters Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry formed a loose alliance as American Regionalists. Some lauded their depictions of the rural landscape and hardworking inhabitants of America's midwestern heartland. Others deemed Regionalist painting dangerous, regarding its easily understood realism as a vehicle for jingoism, chauvinism, and even fascism. Cultivating Citizens shifts the terms of this ongoing debate over subject matter and style by considering heretofore neglected Regionalist programs of art education and concepts of artistic labor."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: "This book will provide the first comprehensive and critical overview of Associated American Artists (AAA), the commercial enterprise best known as the publisher of prints by Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. It addresses not only AAA's storied involvement in the sale of American prints via mail-order catalogue, but also its ongoing promotion of American art in a range of mediums over six decades. Through aggressive marketing of studio prints, reproductions of art, ceramics and textiles, and associations with corporate advertisers, AAA sought to bring "original" American art over the threshold of every American home"--

Book Synopsis Robert Koehler’s The Strike by : James M. Dennis
Download or read book Robert Koehler’s The Strike written by James M. Dennis and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every work of art has a story behind it. In 1886 the German American artist Robert Koehler painted a dramatic wide-angle depiction of an imagined confrontation between factory workers and their employer. He called this oil painting The Strike. It has had a long and tumultuous international history as a symbol of class struggle and the cause of workers’ rights. First exhibited just days before the tragic Chicago Haymarket riot, The Strike became an inspiration for the labor movement. In the midst of the campaign for an eight-hour workday, it gained international attention at expositions in Paris, Munich, and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Though the painting fell into obscurity for decades in the early twentieth century, The Strike lived on in wood-engraved reproductions in labor publications. Its purchase, restoration, and exhibition by New Left activist Lee Baxandall in the early 1970s launched it to international fame once more, and collectors and galleries around the world scrambled to acquire it. It is now housed in the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, Germany. Art historian James M. Dennis has crafted a compelling “biography” of Koehler’s painting: its exhibitions, acclaim, neglect, and rediscovery. He introduces its German-born creator and politically diverse audiences and traces the painting’s acceptance and rejection through the years, exploring how class and sociopolitical movements affected its reception. Dennis considers the significance of key figures in the painting, such as the woman asserting her presence in the center of action. He compellingly explains why The Strike has earned its identity as the iconic painting of the industrial labor movement.
