CHAPTER XIX Robinson's Plea For Lay Preaching John Robinson was remembered by some of his old flock in Norwich and the neighbourhood long after he had left their midst. His books were circulated and read amongst them and had some influence upon their religious practice. They even ventured to hold meetings at which ordinary members exercised their gifts of preaching and expounding the " Word of God" to the edification of the assembled company. This was regarded as a grave irregularity by the ordained clergy. The Rev. John Yates was then minister of St. Andrew's, where Robinson had formerly laboured, and he undertook the task of reproving those who upheld what he regarded as a dangerous and disorderly practice. One of their number, whose initials only are given, justified their action by an appeal to the arguments in favour of lay preaching by ordinary Church members set out in Robinson's book on the Justification of Separation. This appears to have been one William Euring, who, to use his own words, had been brought up not "among the Muses, but Mariners." He subsequently engaged in religious controversy with Thomas Drakes, "preacher of the Word at Harwich and Dovercourt." Euring turned to Robinson's book for support in the practice of "prophesying," of which he was an ardent advocate. He abstracted Robinson's arguments, and the Scripture texts on which they were based, and sent them on to Yates.1 The matter was not allowed to rest there. Yates promptly laid down ten arguments 1 The People's Plea, 1618, p. 47. 1 Work*, vol. iii. p. 309. * The People's Plea, 1618, Preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Revolution was the greatest anti-slavery revolution in history. From the founding of the Plymouth colony up through the Washington Presidency, Americans fought for the creation of a new society based on a universal identity of human creativity. This work begins in colonial days, goes through the Washington Presidency and the leadership of Alexander Hamilton, the continuing fight of the "black abolitionists," and concludes with the Lincoln Presidency and Ulysses Grant's battle for human equality. The enemy of the United States throughout this entire period was the British Empire and the anti-human pro-slavery and pro-narcotics policies it attempted to impose. Sections of this book focus on Hamilton and the U.S, Constitution; Hamilton's economic policies; Gouverneur Morris, John Jay, DeWitt Clinton and the Erie Canal; the racism of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe; the Black Abolitionists; the great Shakespearean actor James Hewlett; the role of the British Empire in creating global slavery; the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln; and Ulysses S. Grant's battle with the Ku Klux Klan. This book is an antidote to the current fad of portraying America as a nation based on slavery and racism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windows into Men’s Souls uses the works of John Robinson, Thomas Helwys, and John Smyth to examine the concept of religious nonconformity that was inherent in the English Reformation. Kenneth Campbell frames the primary works and historical development of various groups and individuals as examples of a general impulse toward religious nonconformity during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. During this time, religious nonconformity became an integral part of English culture and society, shaped by a historical experience that led to rebellion and civil war. The issues that English thinkers wrestled with during this period led to profound insights on both Christianity and on religious toleration that continue to shape Anglo-American and Western religious culture to the present day. This is the story of courageous people—Catholics and Protestants, Separatists and non-Separatists—who ignored, defied, or challenged their government to pursue their own version of religious truth in an age of religious intolerance that valued conformity at all costs.

Download or read book The Life and Writings of Thomas Helwys written by Thomas Helwys and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the earliest Baptist voices and martyr for his faith, Thomas Helwys was the first permanent Baptist and founder of the first Baptist church in England. He is best known for his seminal work on religious liberty, ""A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity"". Helwys' other extant writings include full length theological treatises, personal letters and the first known ""English Baptist Confession of Faith"". These works demonstrate his theological shift from English Separatism to recognizable Baptist tenets. His body of work clearly espouses religious liberty, priesthood of all believers, soul competency, a reverence for the bible, and the autonomy of the local church. In ""Thomas Helwys: Life and Writings"", Joe Early has provided the reader with a concise theological biography of Helwys and a compilation of all his extant writings. It is the first time that all of Thomas Helwys' writings have been available in one volume.

Download or read book Mayflower Dreams written by Karen Petit and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep inside the common house, William Bradford coughed and wheezed. His face was as gray as the smoke from the fire. His right hand tried to roll a large barrel of gunpowder toward the door while his left hand pressed against the wall for support. Pieces of smoldering straw fell down from the roof, landing on him and the barrel. Thou art too sick to move that barrel. Let us help thee. Before, during, and after the 1620 voyage on the Mayflower, the Pilgrims experienced a common house fire, other challenges, and many accomplishments. Their journey is explored by Rose Hopkins when she travels backward in time and meets her ancestors through Mayflower Dreams. Within her reality and dreams, Rose finds that her modern life connects to Pilgrim history and culture. In her reality, Rose has problems living in the present. She is often late and is separated from her husband. She connects to her ancestors as she uses a sampler to look for a watch. Her journey includes visiting Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth Rock, Plimoth Plantation, and the Mayflower II. In her dreams, Rose uses lucid dreaming techniques to create a dream story. She meets many Pilgrims, including John Robinson, the pastor of the Puritans. The Pilgrim history, lifestyle, dialogue, and dreams of religious freedom are realistically displayed within Roses dream story.
