Book excerpt: For many years the author has wondered about John the Baptist, who makes an appearance at the time of his birth and then seems to be missing until the actual baptism of Jesus. Soon after that he is taken prisoner and dies in a Roman Prison. He was related to Jesus, but the Biblical record seems to have nothing else to say about him. He was also a Nazarite, and the only one found in New Testament times. He had loving parents, was related to the priestly servants of the temple yet the Biblical record tells very little about his life. The author has done as extensive research as is possible on the life of John. Every mention of John in the Biblical text is included along with other facets of his life that would be normal for the life of a Nazarite boy, becoming a man. We recognize that Jesus, being the Son of God, had an advantage of possible great pre-knowledge. John had to study and grow and find it out in the Bible, which of course is only the Old Testament of our time. Jesus recognizes how important John is in the few times that he talks about him, but Jesus' mission really moves ahead after John's mission has been completed. Welcome to John, No Greater Prophet, who has become a friend of the author.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.

Book excerpt: Examines how and why the authors of the first three Gospels shaped the story of John the Baptist around the story of Jesus. Careful comparison of these foundational texts yields not only the perspectives of the Synoptic authors but also a provisional sketch of the historical figure of the Baptist, which is then placed within the religious, political and economic context of first-century C.E. Judea. Special attention is given to the interface between John and the Qumran community that scholars have proposed ever since the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.

A prophet of two worlds, he calls out to the Israel of his own generation and to Christian believers of today to heed the most radical demands of conversion and newness of life. Book excerpt: You can fear God or everything else. Fear wisely. Most Christians will agree that we ought to love our God. But what about fearing God? The Bible says that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10), yet a broad survey of modern evangelicalism reveals that the fear of God is hardly regarded as such anymore. Many Christians seem to wrongly assume that the gospel of grace trumps the fear of the Lord. Yet it is only the God of the gospel who is truly worthy of our reverential fear. The purpose of this book is to equip Christians with a healthy view of fearing God and to illustrate how it reconciles with the gospel of God's grace to sinners.
