Book Synopsis Americans at War by : T. Harry Williams
Download or read book Americans at War written by T. Harry Williams and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Americans at War T. Harry Williams, author of Lincoln and His Generals, offers a concise historical survey of the methods by which the United States government has sought to organize and direct our military forces from the days of the Revolutionary War to the Atomic Age. In giving his interpretative view of the development of the American command system, Dr. Williams demonstrates convincingly that the American genius—even the genius for making mistakes—has found full expression in the various systems which have been formulated. During the Revolutionary War, for instance, it was never finally determined just who had the ultimate authority in mapping strategy, Washington or the Continental Congress. The War of 1812 resulted in at least a technical defeat for the United States, Williams says, because of incompetent civilian authority over the military. In the Mexican War and the Civil War, the United States profited from strong war-time presidents, but during the Spanish-American War and World War I the civilian authority left something to be desired. Military men and the historians will welcome this first attempt to give an overall picture o the American command system through all our wars. “I know of no man,” one prominent military authority has stated, “who is better qualified by knowledge, insight, and writing ability to discuss the American military experience.”

Book Synopsis For the Common Defense by : Allan R. Millett
Download or read book For the Common Defense written by Allan R. Millett and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now fully updated and totally revised, this highly regarded classic remains the most comprehensive study available of America’s military history. Called “the preeminent survey of American military history” by Russell F. Weigley, America’s foremost military historian, For the Common Defense is an essential contribution to the field of military history. This carefully researched third edition provides the most complete and current history of United States defense policy and military institutions and the conduct of America’s wars. Without diminishing the value of its earlier editions, authors Allan R. Millett, Peter Maslowski, and William B. Feis provide a fresh perspective on the continuing issues that characterize national security policy. They have updated the work with new material covering nearly twenty years of scholarship, including the history of the American military experience in the Balkans and Somalia, analyzing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2001 to 2012, and providing two new chapters on the Vietnam War. For the Common Defense examines the nation’s pluralistic military institutions in both peace and war, the tangled civil-military relations that created the country’s commitment to civilian control of the military, the armed forces’ increasing nationalization and professionalization, and America’s growing reliance on sophisticated technologies spawned by the Industrial Revolution and the Computer and Information Ages. This edition is also a timely reminder that vigilance is indeed the price of liberty but that vigilance has always been—and continues to be—a costly, complex, and contentious undertaking in a world that continually tests America’s willingness and ability to provide for the common defense.
Book Synopsis Confederate Staff Work At Chickamauga: An Analysis Of The Staff Of The Army Of Tennessee by : Major Robert L. Johnson
Download or read book Confederate Staff Work At Chickamauga: An Analysis Of The Staff Of The Army Of Tennessee written by Major Robert L. Johnson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the critical variables in the successful completion of a military campaign is the functioning of an army’s command and control system. In the American Civil War, a commander’s primary command and control tool was his staff. Large Civil War armies like the Army of Tennessee required significant numbers of staff personnel. Staffs existed at each level of command from regiment through the army level. Staff officers had responsibility in three broad areas: personnel and logistical support to the army, military administration, and command and control. This thesis analyzes the roles, functional organization, and performance of the staff of the Army of Tennessee and its subordinate corps during the Chickamauga campaign, 16 August-22 September 1863. Primary sources for staff personnel include the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, and the Compiled Service Records of staff officers. Staff performance is evaluated in terms of doctrine and practices as embodied in regulations and military literature of the day. This thesis concludes that, while staff performance was adequate in administration and logistical support, the performance of the command and control system was inadequate. The staff’s failure in this area had a significant negative impact on the performance of the army as a whole.

Book Synopsis Commanding Generals and Chiefs of Staff, 1775-2005 by : William Gardner Bell
Download or read book Commanding Generals and Chiefs of Staff, 1775-2005 written by William Gardner Bell and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword: This volume provides short biographical sketches of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff who have led the United States Army. Their rise through the levels of leadership to the pinnacle of their profession reveals both striking parallels and equally fascinating contrasts. While their responsibilities have evolved over the years, the essential elements of leadership remain unchanged. The format of this volume combines biographical information along with the officially designated portraits of the commanding generals and chiefs of staff. It also includes brief accounts of the artists selected to paint the official portraits. As an aspect of the Army art program, these portraits add an interesting and revealing dimension to the biographer's words. This volume not only celebrates the legacy of dedication and patriotism left by these leaders, but also enhances our understanding of military leadership at the highest levels. All those interested in the profession of arms should become familiar with those who have led our Army.

Book Synopsis The Litchfield Law School by : Paul DeForest Hicks
Download or read book The Litchfield Law School written by Paul DeForest Hicks and published by Easton Studio Press LLC. This book was released on 2019-05-19 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this well-researched and engaging book, Paul DeForest Hicks makes a convincing case that the Litchfield Law School provided the most innovative and successful legal education program in the country for almost fifty years (1784-1833). A recent history of the Harvard Law School acknowledged, “In retrospect, both Harvard and Yale have envied Litchfield’s success and wished to claim it as their ancestor.” Upwards of twelve hundred bright and ambitious students came from all over the country to study law at Litchfield with Tapping Reeve and James Gould, who took a national rather than state perspective in their lectures on the evolving principles of American common law. In every year from 1791 to 1860, there were law school alumni, including Aaron Burr and John C. Calhoun, who served at high levels in the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the federal and state governments. Hicks gives fascinating details about many who succeeded as lawyers and in public office but also in the fields of business, finance, education, art and the military. Whether they practiced law or pursued other careers, their collective achievements continued to enhance the prestige of the Litchfield Law School long after it closed.
