Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Bugenhagen Pomeranus: A Biographical Sketch In the history of the Reformation, there are a few names that overshadow all the rest. They are the names of the great leaders, the men who furnished the movement with its great ideas and reinterpreted Christianity to their generation and to the generations that have come after them. When we think of the Reformation, we think of Luther and Melanchthon, of Erasmus and Calvin and Zwingli. But beside these men there was a host of others who contributed their lives to the Reformation movement. Among them there were some who were also leaders of their fellows, though followers of the great Reformers. History has done scant justice to their memory. It has left them in relative obscurity, concealed within the shadows which their greater contemporaries have cast; and yet without them the Reformation would not have been. Among these Reformers of the second rank none did more to earn the gratitude of Protestants than John Bugenhagen. He was the typical servant with the two talents, of the Saviour's parable. An earnest, serious, uninspired and unoriginal personality, he yet possessed two gifts. One of them was the gift of loyalty to what he conceived to be the truth; the other was the gift of order. His loyalty was given wholeheartedly to the Reformation and to the author of it, whose friendship and confidence he enjoyed. His gift of order amounted to a genius for setting things to rights. It was his task to take the principles which Luther taught him and work them out in terms of organization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther did not reform the church by himself. Throughout his life, and in the decades after it, many others spent their careers and risked their lives in the pursuit of a renewed church. They, too, made crucial contributions to the Wittenberg reform movement. In this landmark set, an extensive collection of writings from Johannes Bugenhagen, Luther’s pastor, friend, and colleague in reform, are presented for the first time in English. The vast majority of these works have only been available in their original, sixteenth-century editions. Called by some the Second Apostle to the North, Johannes Bugenhagen (1485–1558) was a pivotal figure in the organization of the Lutheran movement in northern Germany and in parts of Scandinavia. His writings and diverse reforming activity made a lasting impression on church administration, education, the care of the poor, worship, and theology. Representing the fruit of many years of labor, Reformation scholar Kurt K. Hendel has organized this extensive collection thematically—introducing us to Bugenhagen the man, the theologian, the exegete, the pastor, the church organizer, and the social reformer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what the church will look like a generation or two from now? Do you worry that the church you grew up in might someday die? Would you like to see your faith legacy passed on to a new generation of Christians? Using Martin Luther's Smalcald Articles Wesley Telyea explores how Christians today can use Luther's insights found in his own theological last will and testament to write their own, and pass the faith to the next generation of disciples. For Lutherans this book will bring to life an often neglected, but highly valuable, confessional document. For non-Lutherans this book will open up a new way of thinking for how to make disciples.

In its scope—spanning all of Europe from Spain to Poland, from Denmark to Italy—and its erudition, The Radical Reformation is without peer. Now in paperback format, Williams' magnum opus should be considered for any university-level course on the Reformation.
