Download or read book Jim Thorpe written by William A. Cook and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most biographies of Jim Thorpe (1888-1953) emphasize his Olympic glory and his remarkable abilities in track and football. Thorpe's 1912 gold medals in the decathalon and pentathalon and his talent on the gridiron rank him high among outstanding athletes of the twentieth century. That Thorpe also played brilliantly on the baseball diamond is an often overlooked facet of his career. This narrative of Thorpe's rise and fall in American sports pays particular attention to his time in the major and minor leagues, including his stormy relationship with New York Giants manager John McGraw and baseball's role in stripping Thorpe of his Olympic medals. By chronicling Thorpe's involvement in baseball, football and track concurrently, this profile offers a complete portrait of one of the most versatile athletes in sports history.

A life of crushing subordination for Southern blacks maintained by white supremacist laws and customs known as Jim Crow. The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow documents the brutal and oppresive era in American history, spanning the years from the end of the Civil War to the start of the modern Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s. Book Synopsis During Wind and Rain by : Margaret Jones Bolsterli
Download or read book During Wind and Rain written by Margaret Jones Bolsterli and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n telling the story of five generations of her family and its farm in the Arkansas Delta, Margaret Jones Bolsterli brings together her own research, historical perspective, and family lore as it reaches her from the days of her great-grandfather down to her nephew. The result is a family saga that is at once universal and personal, historical and timeless. During Wind and Rain moves from the land’s acquisition in 1848 through the Civil War and Reconstruction, the 1927 Flood, the Great Depression, and the drought of 1930 to the modern considerations of mechanization, fertilizer, pesticides, and irrigation. The transformation of dense swamp and forest to today’s commercial agriculture is the story of two hundred acres worked by people sowing their fate with sweat, ingenuity, and luck. From the hoes of Bolsterli’s great-grandfather Uriah’s time to her nephew Casey’s machinery capable of cultivating an acre in five minutes, During Wind and Rain poignantly portrays five generations of farmers motivated by dreams of “a crop so good that the memory of it can warm the drafty floors of adversity for the rest of one's life.”

Download or read book Tough Love written by Cynthia Burack and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposes how ex-gay and postabortion ministries operate on a shared system of thought and analyzes their social implications.
A staple of the culture wars, the struggle between Christian conservatives and progressives over sexuality and reproductive rights continues. Focusing on ex-gay ministries geared to helping same-sex attracted people resist their sexuality and postabortion ministries dedicated to leading women who have had an abortion to repent that decision, Cynthia Burack argues that both are motivated and characterized by a strain of compassion that is particular to Christian conservatism rather than a bias and hatred toward sexual minorities and sexually active women. This compassion reproduces the sexual ideology of the Christian right and absolves Christian conservatives from responsibility for stigma and other forms of harm to postabortive and same-sex attracted people. Using the democratic theory of Hannah Arendt, the popular fiction of Ayn Rand, and the psychoanalytic thought of Melanie Klein, Burack studies the social and political effects of Christian conservative compassion.
