Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish Woman in America The dreadful tribunal spared neither age nor sex, and so we find old women, like Dona Catalina Enriquez of Vera Cruz, con demmed as Jewish heretics, at the age of eighty. She died in her cell September 25, 1644. At the trial of Gabriel of Grenada, which took place in the City of Mexico in 1642, no less than thirty-four Jewish women are mentioned; several of these are described as having died in prison, others as tortured by the Inquisition. As several of the fam ily names subsequently appear in the his tory of our thirteen colonies, it may not be amiss to mention a few of the names of such victims: Dona Blanca Mendes de Rivera, Beatrice Henriquez, Clara de Sylva, Maria Gomez, Isabel Nunez and others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Settlement of the Jews: In North America More than twenty years have now elapsed since Judge Daly's work was first presented to the public, yet I feel that no excuse or apology is necessary for its re-publication to-day. Mr. Daly, then Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of this city, originally prepared the work in the form of an address delivered at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hebrew Benevolent Society of New York, on April 11, 1872, and then enlarged it for publication in The Jewish Times of that year. Subsequently, the accomplished and erudite author utilized a portion of the same data in an address delivered at the laying of the corner-stone of the new Hebrew Orphau Asylum, New York, May 17, 1883. It seems to me that the work has not lost the smallest element of interest since that time, but, on the contrary, appeals to-day to a much larger public than then, and, as, unfortunately, it did not appear in durable form, will seem to be new to the large majority of its readers of to-day. The various studies are treated by able writ ers, citizens of the United States, each being in full sympathy with the achievements in this country of the racial group of whom he treats. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Jew: An Expose of His Career We have been requested by many prominent men in literary, financial, and commercial circles, to establish a monthly publication, to be called The anti-semite. We have been assured of ample support in this venture. There is certainly enough of patriotism among the masses of the American people to maintain such a publication; and there is, unquestionably, a wide-spread desire to check the diabolical methods of the Jews, these parasites of the human race. The periodical we propose to establish, will give a faithful account of the deceits, crimes, and fraudulent transactions of the Jew, in all channels of business. It will be published monthly, at one dollar per year. Efficient correspondents through out the United States will watch the Jew, and will keep us informed of all his deeds, or rather, misdeeds, which will be fearlessly recorded in The anti-semite. Book excerpt: Spanning 350 years of Jewish experience in this country, A History of the Jews in America is an essential chronicle by the author of The Course of Modern Jewish History. With impressive scholarship and a riveting sense of detail, Howard M. Sachar tells the stories of Spanish marranos and Russian refugees, of aristocrats and threadbare social revolutionaries, of philanthropists and Hollywood moguls. At the same time, he elucidates the grand themes of the Jewish encounter with America, from the bigotry of a Christian majority to the tensions among Jews of different origins and beliefs, and from the struggle for acceptance to the ambivalence of assimilation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Jew as Patriot, Soldier and Citizen It were an error to suppose that prejudice is always the 0& spring of ignorance, inasmuch as the reverse is very frequently true. Not seldom is ignorance the result of prejudice, through a willful refusal to recognize such facts as run counter to the latter. A more accurate simile would, therefore, be the liken ing of prejudice and ignorance to twins, of whom either may be the precursor of the other, and either one the stronger of the two. The prejudices which follow ordinary ignorance give way readily before increasing knowledge of the truth, but where prejudice is the elder of the twin vices, it is usually the most obstinate as well. None so blind as those who will not see is an old aphorism whose truth is universally recognized. This obstinate kind of prejudice is usually but a form of self-conceit, as the latter, in turn. Is but another form of ignorance. To combat one of the most obstinate of all, obstinate pre judices, and to promote enlightenment on a subject whereof ignorance has become unpardonable, has been undertaken by Hon. Simon Wolf in the work before us. His impelling motive has been to enforce a recognition of the Jewish people as a militant factor in the upbuilding of the State, and of Judaism as a primal force in the furtherance of civilization, and he has chosen as his weapons the simple truth of history and the testi mony of leaders among men. A notable French writer remarks that La verite historique (vii) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish Community of New York City Jewish Defence Association began an agitation also on behalf of what was then characterized as an American Jewish Congress. The leaders of the Relief Committee too had begun to feel the necessity of an organization to take the place of individual effort and to relieve the individual of too much responsibility. The prime movers in the creation of an American Jewish Congress accordingly believed it to be their duty to give up their own plan, and to labor for the creation of a general organization. This eventually became the American Jewish Committee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
