Toy, of Harvard University, Chairman of the American Committee for Lectures on the History of Religions, on behalf of the Committee, invited me to deliver the fourth series of these lectures, on a subject connected with the history of the religion of old Israel, my imme diate predecessor, Prof. T. K Cheyne, of Oxford, having chosen for his theme Jewish Religious Life after the Exile. I gladly accepted the honour of this appointment, nor was I long in deciding more definitely upon the subject. Since Professor Cheyne began his lectures with the Babylonian exile, mine must connect with them at that point; since he covered in his course the rest of the Old Testament period, mine must go back to the beginnings. Aside from this, it would have been impossible for me to speak of the early ages of the religion of Yahweh without following it up to its origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Prophets: Before the Exile The company of inspired men, commonly known as the prophets of Israel, were the unique product of the Jewish religious genius. They were pre - eminently preachers of righteousness. Fearless and undaunted, they told the house of Israel their sins and the house of Jacob their transgressions. They contemplated the facts of life from the highest point of view. For them religion and morality were blended, ethics and politics were one. Theirs was peculiarly a social mes sage; the demand for justice underlies all their thinking and speaking. They had a veritable passion for righteousness; through all the ages their words have been torches lighting the way of men struggling upward towards the truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case a the Anti-Zionists: A Reply For Zionists it is an axiom that what Judaism needs most of all at the present time is a new movement of concentration. Throughout Jewish history it is concentration and not diffusion that has preserved the Jewish spirit and the Jewish way of life. What has rendered possible the survival of the Jewish people and of Judaism since the Jewish State was overthrown is the fact that in every period there has been somewhere a strong centre of Jewish life and learning, which has served as a reservoir whence all the scattered sections of Jewry could draw vitality. In Babylon, in Spain, in Germany, and most recently in Poland. Such centres have existed. To-day, as a result of various causes which it would take too long to detail here, Jewry is or is coming to be without a centre, and is falling to pieces in consequence; and this disruption of Jewry is inevitably accompanied by a weakening and disintegration of Judaism. Considered in this aspect, the movement for a return to Palestine is the natural reply to this threat to Jewry and Judaism. It means reintegration instead of disintegration; it means the creation of a new unifying force in Jewish life - and a force which will be not only unifying, but also creative, since Palestine has this advantage over all the temporary centres of the exile, that it has an abiding place in the consciousness of the Jew, and is bound up with all that is fundamentally Jewish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology and Ethics, of the Hebrews The Hebrew religion and ethical life reached a culmination in the Exile, in the ideals of the Slave Singer, which are almost identical with those of Jesus, five centuries later. The men who had reached this height, went out or remained out in the world doing their work of evangel; they were necessarily lost to history so far as they were Hebrews. In them Hebrew religion and ethics attained their cli max, completion and close. Our volume, therefore, ceases at that climax. Book excerpt: In the book of Genesis, God bestows a new name upon Abram--Abraham, a father of many nations. With this name and his Covenant, Abraham would become the patriarch of three of the world's major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Connected by their mutual--if differentiated--veneration of the One God proclaimed by Abraham, these traditions share much beyond their origins in the ancient Israel of the Old Testament. This Very Short Introduction explores the intertwined histories of these monotheistic religions, from the emergence of Christianity and Islam to the violence of the Crusades and the cultural exchanges of al-Andalus. Each religion continues to be shaped by this history but has also reacted to the forces of modernity and politics. Movements such as the Reformation and that led by seventh-century Kharijites have emerged, intentioned to reform or restore traditional religious practice but quite different in their goals and effects. Relationships with states, among them Israel and Saudi Arabia, have also figured importantly in their development. The Abrahamic Religions: A Very Short Introduction brings these traditions together into a common narrative, lending much needed context to the story of Abraham and his descendants. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born on the South Shore of Massachusetts, Richard Tulip grew up in the shadows of Plymouth Rock. The church was always a part of his life from his early childhood onward. After graduation from High School, he attended Lake Forest College in Illinois and returned to Massachusetts to attend Andover Newton Theological School where he earned a Master of Divinity degree in 1975. He has served churches in southern New Hampshire and Maine. He is currently serving as pastor of the Federated Church in West Winfield, New York. While studying for a Doctor of Ministry degree at Bangor Seminary (graduating in 2000), he first encountered the idea that the experiences of the church in America and other western cultures are tantamount to an exile, much like that experienced by Judaism when the people were carried off to Babylon. During a sabbatical, he explored the parallels between the Babylonian exile and the late 20 th century exile of the church. His studies revealed that Judaism utilized the post-exilic period to reform, renew. Revitalize, and transform ancient Judaism into a modern major religion. This book is an exploration of how the transformation of Judaism may hold some valuable keys for the renewal of the Christian church in the 21 st century.

Noah's Discourse on the Restoration of the Jews: Republished in Extract With an Introductory Note Russia, with a steady glance and firm step, approaches Turkey in Europe, and when her railroads are completed to the Black Sea, will pour in her Cossacks from the Don and the Vistula, and Constantinople will be occupied by the descendants of the Tartar dynasty, and all Turkey in Europe, united to Greece, will con stitute either an independent empire, or be occupied by Russia who, with one arm on the Mediterranean, and the other on the North Sea, will nearly embrace all Europe. The counterbalance of this gigantic power will be a firm and liberal union of Austria with all Italy and the Roman States, down to the borders of Gaul: but the revolution will not end here. England must pos sess Egypt, as affording the only secure route to her possessions in India through the Red Sea; then Palestine, thus placed be tween the Russian possessions and Egypt, reverts to its legitimate proprietors, and for the safety of the surrounding nations, a powerful, wealthy, independent and enterprising people are placed there by and with the consent of the Christian powers, and with their aid and agency the land of Israel passes once more into the possession of the descendants of Abraham. The ports of the Mediterranean will be again opened to the busy hum of commerce; the fields will again bear the fruitful harvest, and the Christian and Jew will together, on Mount Zion, raise their voices in praise of Him whose covenant with Abraham was to en dure forever, and in whose seed all the nations of the earth are to be blessed. This is our destiny. Every attempt to colonize the Jews in other countries has failed; their eye has steadily rested on their own beloved Jerusalem, and they have said, The time will come, the promise will be fulfilled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Many a time they mingled them selves with the heathen, and learned their works and most of the kings of Israel and Judah, indulg ing the more material ambitions for territorial ag grandizement, made alliances with their heathen neighbours, and imitated their ways, and were faithless to the ideal of a chosen 'people. But the prophets never allowed that ideal to die or to be come obscured. While they denounced the idolatry of the backsliders, and foretold the destruction of the political power of the kingdom as a punishment therefor, they declared that, after the people had been chastened in exile, a remnant would return to Palestine to form there the centre of aspiritual supremacy over mankind. And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written unto life in Jerusalem.
