Book excerpt: This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. No comprehensive survey of this area has been undertaken so far. Yet only a broad focus of this kind can show how diasporic Jewish literatures have been (and are ) – while closely tied to their own traditions – deeply intertwined with local and global literary developments; and how the aesthetic praxis they introduced played a decisive, formative role in the history of literature. With this epistemic claim, the volume aims at steering clear of isolationist approaches to Jewish literatures.

Book excerpt: "An interesting contribution to the Columbian literature of the period." - The Book Buyer: A Monthly Review of American and Foreign Literature "Will be new territory to most readers ... the author has fulfilled his hope of furnishing a 'contribution to the history of the discovery of America and to the history of the Jews.'" - The Review of Reviews "A book of high literary and historical value ... written in an interesting style." - The Literary World The curious relationship which Columbus' discovery has with the Jews in Portugal and Spain, is the subject of Dr. Meyer Kayserling's 1894 book "Christopher Columbus and the Participation of the Jews in the Spanish and Portuguese Discoveries." Dr. Kayserling's book fairly teems with new discoveries of facts in the history of the Jews of Spain and Portugal and their participation in the work of the discoverers of those nations. The book, under consideration is admirably translated by Professor Charles Gross (1857-1909) of Harvard. As for the characteristics of the work itself, it would be presumptuous to praise Dr. Kayserling's writings. His profound scholarship, historical acumen, conscientious love of accuracy and truth, and vigorous style, are well known to all students of Jewish literature. Meyer Kayserling (1829 - 1905) was a rabbi and historian, who studied the history and literature of the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula. As Kayserling notes there is some evidence that Columbus himself was of Spanish-Jewish origins; Kayserling gives a full review of this evidence. The forced contributions of the Jews, historians have made note of before this, but Dr. Kayserling, who has carefully studied the records in Spain, produces much new evidence relating to individual Jews, who by their teachings or personal exertions were of singular help to Columbus. The work is distinguished for its impartiality. Kayserling writes: "FEW mortals have been honored by posterity as much as Christopher Columbus. The question whether the Jews assisted in these discoveries has already heretofore been propounded, but it has never before been carefully investigated. Entrusted with this honorable but difficult mission, I determined to visit Spain in order to complete my collection of material by exploring the Spanish archives and libraries. Such documents as I found there, I transcribed. They have been used with care in the text. I trust that I have succeeded in making a contribution to the history of the discovery of America and to the history of the Jews, to whom America has been a land of refuge, a land of freedom and of equality." The present work forms a valuable addition to Jewish history, to Spanish history, and to the history of American discovery, and no library devoted to either of these subjects can afford to be without it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multilingualism and polyphony of Jewish literary writing across the globe demands a collaborative, comparative, and interdisciplinary investigation into questions regarding methods of researching and teaching literatures. Disseminating Jewish Literatures compiles case studies that represent a broad range of epistemological and textual approaches to the curricula and research programs of literature departments in Europe, Israel, and the United States. In doing so, it promotes the integration of Jewish literatures into national philologies and the implementation of comparative, transnational approaches to the reading, teaching, and researching of literatures. Instead of a dichotomizing approach, Disseminating Jewish Literatures endorses an exhaustive, comprehensive conceptualization of the Jewish literary corpus across languages. Included in this volume are essays on literatures in Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish, as well as essays reflecting the fields of Yiddish philology and Latin American studies. The volume is based on the papers presented at the Gentner Symposium funded by the Minerva Foundation, held at the Freie Universität Berlin in June 2018.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive anthology gathers stories, essays, memoirs, excerpts from novels, and poems by more than 130 Jewish writers of the past two centuries who worked in the Russian language. It features writers of the tsarist, Soviet, and post-Soviet periods, both in Russia and in the great emigrations, representing styles and artistic movements from Romantic to Postmodern. The authors include figures who are not widely known today, as well as writers of world renown. Most of the works appear here for the first time in English or in new translations. The editor of the anthology, Maxim D. Shrayer of Boston College, is a leading authority on Jewish-Russian literature. The selections were chosen not simply on the basis of the author's background, but because each work illuminates questions of Jewish history, status, and identity. Each author is profiled in an essay describing the personal, cultural, and historical circumstances in which the writer worked, and individual works or groups of works are headnoted to provide further context. The anthology not only showcases a wide selection of individual works but also offers an encyclopedic history of Jewish-Russian culture. This handsome two-volume set is organized chronologically. The first volume spans the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth century, and includes the editor's extensive introduction to the Jewish-Russian literary canon. The second volume covers the period from the death of Stalin to the present, and each volume includes a corresponding survey of Jewish-Russian history by John D. Klier of University College, London, as well as detailed bibliographies of historical and literary sources.

Annotations of every work cited are based on critical evaluation by scholars immersed in the subject matter. Part I is a bibliography of recent monographs, dissertations, and scholarly articles published mainly in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Yiddish, and Hebrew. Providing access to some 750 works, most of which are not cited in other standard references, it covers topics ranging from agriculture, history, and anti-semitism to literary and social criticism. Biographic notes are supplied on authors whose work has been especially important to the development of the field. Part II lists and evaluates holdings of 220 Latin American Jewish periodicals in U.S. archives and libraries and is arranged by country. Author, title, and subject indexes are provided. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This massive compilation represents the culmination of Robert Singerman's almost single-handed twenty-year project to bring under bibliographic control published material on one of Europe's most important centers of Jewish life and culture. With close to 5,500 citations, it supplements a similar number of sources in Singerman's foundation bibliography on the subject, The Jews in Spain and Portugal: A Bibliography (1975). Together, the two bibliographies provide near-exhaustive coverage of materials on the Jewish experience in Spain and Portugal from antiquity to 1992, the quincentenary of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. The present work comprises post-1975 publications and also retrospectively incorporates earlier sources not previously documented. Classified into thirty broad areas and hundreds of historical and topical sub-categories and special subjects, including numerous works on individuals, it culls from the literature of Jewish studies, Spanish and Portuguese history and literature, ecclesiastical history, social history, and many other fields. Topics of special importance include local Jewish history, Jewish-Christian polemics, and the portrayal of Spanish and Portuguese Jews in literature. Fascinating sources on more specific subjects such as Jewish participation in the Spanish Civil War, Jewish physicians, and Columbus' alleged Jewish ancestry, Jewish translation activity during the Middle Ages are among those documented. While the 1975 bibliography is especially strong in Jewish sources from pre-Holocaust Europe, the present work reflects a preponderance of recent Spanish and Portuguese studies and the important contribution of Israeli scholarship. This bibliography represents tireless analysis of serial literature and of Jewish content in books not specifically--or even apparently--bearing on Judaic matters.
