Book Synopsis Castellani and Italian Archaeological Jewelry by : Susan Weber Soros
Download or read book Castellani and Italian Archaeological Jewelry written by Susan Weber Soros and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century in Rome, three generations of the Castellani family created what they called “Italian archaeological jewelry,” which was inspired by the precious Etruscan, Roman, Greek, and Byzantine antiquities being excavated at the time. The Castellani jewelry consisted of finely wrought gold that was often combined with delicate and colorful mosaics, carved gemstones, or enamel. This magnificent book is the first to display and discuss the jewelry and the family behind it. International scholars discuss the life and work of the Castellani, revealing the wide-ranging aspects of the family’s artistic and cultural activities. They describe the making and marketing of the jewelry, the survey collection of all periods of Italian jewelry on display in the Castellani’s palatial store, and the Castellani’s activities in the trade of antiquities, as they sponsored excavations, and restored, dealt, and exhibited antiques. They also recount the family’s involvement in the cultural and political life of their city and country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey through the splendor and the excesses of the Gilded Age "Every aspect of life in the Gilded Age took on deeper, transcendent meaning intended to prove the greatness of America: residences beautified their surroundings; works of art uplifted and were shared with the public; clothing exhibited evidence of breeding; jewelry testified to cultured taste and wealth; dinners demonstrated sophisticated palates; and balls rivaled those of European courts in their refinement. The message was unmistakable: the United States had arrived culturally, and Caroline Astor and her circle were intent on leading the nation to unimagined heights of glory."—From A Season of Splendor Take a dazzling journey through the Gilded Age, the period from roughly the 1870s to 1914, when bluebloods from older, established families met the nouveau riche headlong—railway barons, steel magnates, and Wall Street speculators—and forged an uneasy and glittering new society in New York City. The best of the best were Caroline Astor's 400 families, and she shaped and ruled this high society with steel. A Season of Splendor is a panoramic sweep across this sumptuous landscape, presenting the families, the wealth, the balls, the clothing, and the mansions in vivid detail—as well as the shocking end of the era with the sinking of the Titanic.
Book Synopsis The Past Master by : Kenneth Cameron
Download or read book The Past Master written by Kenneth Cameron and published by FelonyandMayhem+ORM. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expatriate U.S. Civil War veteran and sheriff turned novelist living in Edwardian London follows a deadly trail in search of a missing box. It’s true that Denton and Henry James are both American writers now living in London, but they have little else in common: James has the gravitas (and perhaps the pomposity) of a living legend, master of the literary kingdom, while Denton . . . well, he’s scruffy and often covered in dog hair. But he does have this knack for sorting out problems, and James has just such a problem. There was a box, you see, and now it’s gone missing, and in the box were certain letters that, if made public, could be most embarrassing. Most embarrassing indeed. Praise for the Denton Mysteries “Cameron . . . paints a striking portrait of London, and Denton is a hero whose unheroic side only makes his character more appealing.” —Kirkus Reviews on The Frightened Man “This is no dry, stuffy, repressed Edwardian depiction of events. There are beautiful, concise and accurate descriptions, comedy scenes and credible characters in this novel, which skillfully combines mystery and history. ”—Historical Novel Society on The Second Woman

Download or read book De Renne written by William Harris Bragg and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is known today of Georgia history was preserved through the diligent efforts of a single family. From Wormsloe, their ancestral plantation near Savannah, the De Rennes built an extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts on the history of the state and the Confederacy, much of which is now housed at the University of Georgia and the Museum of the Confederacy. This book focuses on their efforts in the years 1827 through 1970, conveying the passion and purpose with which they pursued their avocation. William Harris Bragg has mined a vast array of archival sources to present this engaging narrative of the De Renne family. He tells how wealthy bibliophile and philanthropist G. W. J. De Renne and his wife, Mary, set the precedent for the family’s accumulation of historic material, how their son established the Wymberley Jones De Renne Georgia Library that bears his name, and how his children in turn expanded upon that tradition. The De Rennes also printed limited editions of primary historical materials beginning with the series known as the Wormsloe Quartos. Bragg’s account of three generations of the De Renne family vividly records their achievements as it reconstructs their life at Wormsloe and follows them in their travels around the world. It provides glimpses into the dynamics and behavior of one of Georgia’s oldest and most prominent families and the evolution of the southern aristocracy. The book draws on newly available material to expand significantly on Ellis Merton Coulter’s 1955 work, Wormsloe, and provides the most complete account to date of the De Rennes. Beyond the story of the De Renne family, Bragg also reveals much about the history of collecting and of the antiquarian book trade, as well as of the evolution of Georgia historical documentation. Appendix material includes genealogical tables and lists of collections and publications, making De Renne: Three Generations of a Georgia Family an invaluable source for all scholars and aficionados of southern history.

Book excerpt: When Vincent van Gogh's Portrait of Monsieur Trabuc turns up unexpectedly at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—a $50 million painting shipped from Argentina via UPS, like an ordinary package—the case goes to Clay Ryder, the NYPD Major Case Squad detective assigned to art theft. Ryder discovers that in Paris, late 1944, a Jewish widow accused a German SS officer of stealing the painting. The officer was reported to have died in a car crash at the war's end, and the whereabouts of the Trabuc between then and now remain a mystery. Ryder's search for the widow's heirs leads him to Rachel Meredith, who teaches at NYU. The museum presents the painting to her in a spectacular public ceremony that winds up on the front page of newspapers around the world. Though the case is closed, Ryder can't seem to shake it. When Rachel Meredith is attacked, she calls on him; what might be a simple assault doesn't quite add up. And he still wonders who sent the van Gogh from Argentina. One of his most reliable contacts in the art world floats a theory that ties the van Gogh portrait to a black market auction in the 70's that might have involved a Swiss art dealer and an international crime kingpin with unlimited cash. Then Israel's Mossad pays Ryder a clandestine visit; the news splash about the van Gogh is the first link they've had to the SS officer in decades. Meanwhile, art dealers, auction houses, and museums vie to buy the van Gogh from Rachel Meredith. When she refuses to sell, the situation goes from predatory to violent. Ryder has to race against time to outmaneuver a cunning mastermind who will resort to as many murders as it takes to get hold of the Trabuc. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of Color in the Age of Enlightenment covers the period 1650 to 1800. From the Baroque to the Neo-classical, color transformed art, architecture, ceramics, jewelry, and glass. Newton, using a prism, demonstrated the seven separate hues, which encouraged the development of color wheels and tables, and the increased standardization of color names. Technological advances in color printing resulted in superb maps and anatomical and botanical images. Identity and wealth were signalled with color, in uniforms, flags, and fashion. And the growth of empires, trade, and slavery encouraged new ideas about color. Color shapes an individual's experience of the world and also how society gives particular spaces, objects, and moments meaning. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Color examines how color has been created, traded, used, and interpreted over the last 5000 years. The themes covered in each volume are color philosophy and science; color technology and trade; power and identity; religion and ritual; body and clothing; language and psychology; literature and the performing arts; art; architecture and interiors; and artefacts. Carole P. Biggam is Honorary Senior Research Fellow in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Glasgow, UK. Kirsten Wolf is Professor of Old Norse and Scandinavian Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. Volume 4 in the Cultural History of Color set. General Editors: Carole P. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There was nothing particularly clever about solving the case,” Molly Miller says about her sleuthing of a murder two years ago on a Palm Beach golf course that bewildered even the FBI and won her local renown as a Floridian Miss Marple. “I knew the murderer and the victim better than the police, and I had ample opportunity to watch what went on. In fact, that is the whole secret of detective work - look and listen.” Intrepidly Molly looks and listens while patiently amassing clues and, teaming up once again with FBI Special Agent Emilio Gonzalez, follows the murderer's trail to a shady art auction house and the victim's Miami apartment. But it's at the splashy opening of a new Manhattan gallery where Molly single-handedly uncovers the heist's astonishing motive and identifies the thief, a shocking revelation that had gone unsuspected by everyone else, even though the ill-fated schemer had been in plain sight all along. What readers are saying about this book: In this frothy tale of theft and murder, Lowe sticks to the basics of the classic mystery with great success; Molly and [her nephew] Scott make an elegant, intelligent amateur detective team. -Library Journal Like a charming female Columbo, Molly Miller gets the job done and ingeniously solves the case while making friends in the process. I know because she certainly made one out of me in Cover Up. Indeed, I would welcome her as a house guest anytime. Not only is Molly delightful company, but undoubtedly a crime waits around the corner and soon she would be off on another crime-detecting adventure for me to raptly follow. - River Jordan, Author Don't tell anybody but life in Palm Beach is rarely as fun and exciting as Dagmar Lowe makes it in her new novel. But I'll excuse her for having written such an entertaining book. -Larry Leamer, Author Author Dagmar Lowe has done it again! Her second book in the Molly Miller series perfectly captures the gloriously colorful side of Palm Beach, providing a chic backdrop for this story of intrigue and suspense. -Lilly Pulitzer, Fashion Designer and Author Dagmar Lowe's recipe for a satisfying mystery is to begin with a fascinating Palm Beach setting, fold in a confounding art theft, an elusive murder, and cast of intriguing characters, then add a generous pinch of high society glamour and have the zesty mix brought to a boil by Molly Miller. And I can't help but notice that the matronly Molly's hair is always well coifed. Believe me, that’s not easy when you're sleuthing two crimes at the same time. -Kathy L.
