Accounts of His life, are of necessity, either stories or studies based on the gospels and available historical evidence. This landmark study by the renowned biblical scholar Rush Rhees was published in 1904, by Charles Scribner's Sons. The intent which was magnificently fulfilled, was to meet a widespread demand for a non-technical, yet learned and reliable guide to the New Testament. This remarkable book has been reformatted as originally published with the exception of an appendix referring to related literature and an expansion of the original index.

Book excerpt: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth (The Jefferson Bible) Thomas Jefferson - In 1804 Thomas Jefferson decided to study the gospels to see if he could distill the essence of Jesus' teachings into a concise book that could be quickly read and easily understood. This volume is the result, offering valuable insights into the teachings of Jesus Christ and into the mind and beliefs of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson used a razor to cut the sections where Jesus was teaching out and then he pasted them all together into a coherent narrative. In a sense this book is a precursor to the red letter editions of the bible emphasizing the teaching of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paula Fredriksen, renowned historian and author of From Christ to Jesus, begins this inquiry into the historic Jesus with a fact that may be the only undisputed thing we know about him: his crucifixion. Rome reserved this means of execution particularly for political insurrectionists; and the Roman charge posted at the head of the cross indicted Jesus for claiming to be King of the Jews. To reconstruct the Jesus who provoked this punishment, Fredriksen takes us into the religious worlds, Jewish and pagan, of Mediterranean antiquity, through the labyrinth of Galilean and Judean politics, and on into the ancient narratives of Paul's letters, the gospels, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Josephus' histories. The result is a profound contribution both to our understanding of the social and religious contexts within which Jesus of Nazareth moved, and to our appreciation of the mission and message that ended in the proclamation of Jesus as Messiah.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus of Nazareth: A Study The aim Of this book is to help thoughtful readers of the gospels to discern more clearly the features of him whom those writings inimitably portray. It is avowedly a study rather than a story, and as a companion to the reading of the gospels it seeks to answer some of the questions which are raised by a sympathetic considera tion Of those narratives. These answers are Offered in an unargumentative way, even where the questions are still in debate among scholars. This method has been adopted because technical discussion would be of inter est to but few of those whom the book hopes to serve. On some Of the questions a non - committal attitude is taken in the belief that for the understanding of the life of Jesus it is of little importance which way the decision finally goes. Less attention has been given to questions Of geography and archaeology than to those which have a more vital biographical significance. A word concerning the point of view adopted. The church has inherited a rich treasure Of doctrine concern ing its Lord, the result of patient study and, frequently, of heated controversy. It is customary to approach the gospels with this interpretation of Christ as a premise, and such a study has some unquestionable advantages. His tools were simple and few, and the wood he had to work with was poor, so that he could not do the fine work carpenters do nowadays. His name was Joseph, and he was quite poor. But he married a girl named Mary, and lived humbly and contentedly in his little house in Nazareth. Mary would do the simple housework and would spin flax or grind barley, while Joseph worked busily with his tools, and so they got along quite nicely. One day Mary was made very happy by God whispering in her heart that she should very soon have a little child. That was good news to Mary, and, as she thought about it, she determined that she would name her baby "Jesus." Now, some time after Mary had learned this good news, Joseph came home one day and said they should have to go to Bethlehem, another town, on some matter of business. So he saddled his patient little donkey, and put Mary on its back, and took his staff, and set out for Bethlehem. But when they reached Bethlehem, he found that there was no room for them in any house or at the inn. So he went into a little stable of the inn, where the cattle lived, and he and Mary lay down in the sweet hay to sleep. That very night, as they lay sleeping on the hay in the stable, the little baby was born. The good news had at last come true, and Mary was very happy indeed. She laid her little baby-boy in a manger, a trough out of which the animals ate their hay and grain, which made a very cosy crib for him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography by Jesus of Nazareth: Being His Historical Life Given by Himself Through the Inspiration of the Scribe Let humanity learn that those that have laid down their earth bodies are not dead. Let the earth claim but her own. The life Of that body continues to live as before. Here I find myself employed in my former business, even with all the enthusiasm I ever felt, writing my own books. Freed from care; freed from the cold neglect of man. That was my experience when I fell beneath the scourge of disease. The hour has come when I can denounce hypocrisy and deceit, fearing not the wicked tongue of slander, or the criticism of false friends. May light fill the earth, fearless of those that fear the light. My friends are friends that have been made my friends through the sympathy Of my writings; therefore it is the sympathy of the soul without any selfish motives; therefore that makes us friends forever. She that inscribes for me has begun a work for humanity. I can assist in the writing, yet all the ideas are as new to me as they are to the reader. This work is to be free from fiction, and it is the first that has ever been given relative to the first-born of Joseph and Mary - Jesus of Nazareth. The influences are all from that age in which he lived, and will give humble truths as they were. He is beside me hoping to bless humanity, if they will be blessed by facts. A book has made its appearance, entitled The Life of Jesus of Nazareth. Every careful reader will feel that it is an emblematical history instead of life facts that actually occurred. This work before me is full of interest to every human creature. Reader, I acknowledge myself a heretic toward the mystified God, incarcerated in the flesh. May my friends in the flesh believe I dictated this preface in order that they may know I am still beside them; still living in their midst. I will inscribe my own name. George lippard. The significance of it is eternal. Nowhere else has God revealed his nature. How shall one approach the task of writing an account of it? Most of our knowledge of this wonderful life is derived from the four Gospels, but in many points the Gospels do not agree. They often differ as to the order of events and the occasions which called forth some of the sublimest teaching of the Master. They differ also as to the length of time covered by his ministry. Under these circumstances those who undertake this delicate and sacred task to-day fall into five groups according to their methods of treating the sources. 1. There are those who regard all the Gospels as equally valuable sources of information, and seek as best they can to harmonize their statements. These writers base their chronology of the Gospels, which was written about seventy years after the Crucifixion. This method produces the type of devotional biography of Jesus which has within the last century become conventional. 2. Another group of writers on the life of Jesus may be called the historical school. They seek to use the knowledge of the composition and dates of the Gospels which has been gained by modern study in accordance with the methods of modern historical research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Jesus of Nazareth "In a matter so solemn as that of religion, all men whose temporal interests are not involved in existing institutions earnestly desire to find the truth." If this be so, as it surely ought to be, I need no apology for sending out the following pages to do their share in assisting men to find the truth. Ours is prominently a practical age; the discoveries and inventions of every branch of science, no sooner made, are applied to the practical aims of daily life; every new idea is popularized and made the property of the millions. Only theology seems to make an exception. She, once the presiding mistress in the halls of science, is now scarcely recognized as entitled to admission. Yet, the discoveries of theology during the last decades are not less startling and suprising than those made in any other department of science. That they are less known is due partly to the theological bias of society, partly to the lack of popularization - or, rather, to both, for the one can only be eradicated by the other. It is especially the origin of Christianity over which a flood of light has been poured by the exertions of modern scientific theology, and of which a more intimate knowledge must be desirable to every thinking man.
